Android Thread - 2011 Edition | Stuffed on Gingerbread, Hungry for Honeycomb!

I just won a Optimus One which should tide me over nicely until the carrier I want to go with gets the Iphone 5 (fingers crossed) or a more modern android (it's current top model is the Nexus One).

Not sure when I will receive it but I read that they plan on putting 2.3 on it even though it is only a 600 mhz processor...but I can seem to find any more info since that announcement in december.

Anyone know if this is still going to happen?

Here's what I've gathered about the Tegra 2 and its H.264 hardware decoding support. Going by the Motorola guide, Anandtech, and user experiences, it seems like hardware decoding of H.264 is limited to baseline/main profile and a maximum level of 3.1......

.....That said, the lack of high profile support for 720P videos is pretty lame since its pretty standard these days. You'll need to transcode to or re-rip your stuff to get around it. (If you don't get sound, don't forget that it needs to be 2 channel 160Kbps AAC)

Appreciate your tackling the subject some more. :( @ the last part though.

There was another article on it a little back.

It said something along the lines of the Iphone was the only device able to use a certain connection type with the towers/network, which is why it was getting higher speed than anything else. And Androids can be firmware upgraded, but ATT did not allow it for the longest time, until a few weeks ago when this came to light.

The allegations were that ATT artificially boosted Iphone traffic speed and quality by giving it priority on the better connection method or something.

I would return it. Why spend money for brand new top of the line hardware just to be disappointed, when they can just swap you another model and give yours to someone who wont notice. Theyll do it.
Yeah your right, just did it. It's bothersome as hell tho, I hate doing these kind of things, even if they said they'll compensate me. If it was on the sides I wouldn't mind much but staring you right in face it's just... I don't think anyone would not notice it.

Anyway, I got my free 8GB card upgraded to a 16gb one in the process.

This xoom is the coolest thing ive ever bought. Any word on when the real flash is gonna be availible?

While Flash is nice, I'm more excited to find out abut when they are going to implement the SD cards

Man, what a crock of doodie. The official Motorola case for the Xoom leaves little marks on the sides of the Xoom when you take it out to charge it. I'm in the process of filing those nubs down so they won't mark the Xoom, but why the hell did they think it was a good idea?

Any good third party cases coming out soon?

yeah, the marks wipe off, but just either cut it with an exacto or do a light file down and its done.... that tight of a grip isn't needed

i didnt think i'd miss flash, but with a full fledged browser i missed it quickly, although yes, #1 is the sdcard. I'm hoping when the AOSP release hits, there is an update pushed out

Yep, just got done filing it down, it still gives a light mark, but not too much.

Or an iPad or iPad 2 and put XBMC on it if you need a tablet.

Does the iDevice version of XBMC play divx, xvid, mkv and other crap like real and mvbr? If no, its not a real XBMC.

Wonder how far in market share will Android grow this year. It seems like it might hit a saturated point rather quickly based on how fast it has grown.

It will become the true successor of Windows XP.

I can see this. MS said W7 for tablets wont be out untl 2013, and by then Android may be so entrenched into devices it will be hard or impossible to replace.

It does but can't handle high def video of other formats besides H264 because it's doing software decoding; I found out the hard way.

The worst part about XBMC for iOS is the interface transplanted from the desktop version. It's embarassing, especially on the iPhone.

I'm surprised that there is no Theme for the iOS devices.

Something like the xperiance (modified for touch input) could work.

I would hope, if we're just talking about tablets, that the new iPad 2 would make this a non issue with he supposedly amazing performance increase.

It's coming. They just didn't have skin developers working on the port at the time. It takes time to develop a whole new skin for the touch interface.

I don't know, if it doesnt have hardware acceleration i wouldnt expect a mobile chipset to be able to handle HD decoding in software.

Damn it, so how screwed am I? I was right on the cusp of switching from my HTC Hero on Sprint to join in on my partner's AT&T Family plan...he has an iPhone4 and I wanted to stay on Android so we could have the best of both worlds, so naturally I was excited to get the Motorola Atrix...I've been impressed with the download and upload speeds on his phone(especially during our recent trip to Puerto Rico)...now I hear this iphone favoring bandwidth crap...

I really want to switch, it'll be a good cost-cutting move for us to share the bill, and between Sprint's dismal speeds in both my neighborhood as well as his(as well as PR, which we plan to visit occasionally), and the lack of an EVO type flagship phone on the horizon(as far as i know), I definitely want to switch from sprint...

You shouldn't be encoding HD stuff in anything other than H.264!

Okay, this is annoying me quite a bit now.

At some point my phone (HTC Incredible) now automatically mounts my SD Card to the PC whenever I plug it into my computer to charge. Annoyingly, this breaks a couple things (my BeautifulWidgets skin no longer loads and falls back to the ugly default, and it clears my MixZing playlist, among other things).

All this happens despite having the connectivity settings set to "Charge Only". Only the SD card gets mounted to the PC- the phone's internal storage does not get mounted (until I choose a different connectivity option).

Any ideas what could cause this? It hasn't always been like this; it used to work well.

ITT: Android GAF convinces me to get an OG Ipad.

if you want the most support for tablet apps, getting the cheap OG Ipad is a great way to extend what you can wait for. While i think overall the OS is much MUCH better (in concept, still has a few bugs to work out) than iOS on a tablet 6-8 months down the road would be where you want to take a look again. If you are swaying because of the encoding, its a foolish reason that only affects a very small percentage of people that would think about storing 1080p encoded content on a tablet with finite space.

I'm of the opinion that on an OS level, Android > iOS, but app wise apple's store beats the Google Market. Where my apple friends and I get into debate, is which of the two is more important lol. For right now, it's more of an economics thing (had my win7 tab stolen and I miss the form-factor). Getting a well priced 1st Gen ipad doesn't rule out my getting a honeycomb tablet in a couple months. the video stuff is just a big perk.

Doesn't hurt that my 2nd Gen Ipod Touch performs like crap with ios4, either. It's funny, I prefer the Android ecosystem to Apple's but app-wise I'm far more established on the iOS side.

That Ars review of the xoom would pretty much kill the idea of me buying one (had the Netflix issue already not done that).

I mean, even if you had no interest in an iPad, it still sounds like you'd be better off waiting for the Honeycomb options 6 months from now.

This happened to me, I was using Winamp and had set it to auto-mount when connected by usb.

This was overriding the default android settings, worth a look (if not Winamp see if you've got something similar).

You're not gonna get any better hardware 6 months from now (unless Sony pulls a shocker). Everything is going to be variations on the Tegra 2. Kal-El won't hit consumer devices for another year. None of the Honeycomb tablets announced outclass the Xoom.

the point would be you could put the purchase off because there isn't enough complelling software to get it. Not because the hardware will change. I love the Xoom hardware, the OS needs some more time to bake as well as some time for people to write more honeycomb apps

Still holding out for the Toshiba Tablet, waiting for final specs and pricing.

The tablet landscape should be plenty clear within 3-4 months.

Smartphones were the main competitive products for most operators in Europe in the sales season, and their marketing budgets were invested to promote and sell these devices. Strong promotional offers and sales discounts contributed to the volumes shipped during the quarter. The strong push for smartphones along with the increasing demand pushed the market to positive growth as feature phones continued to decline at a rapid pace. Android devices from HTC, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung along with the iPhone4 from Apple were the most advertised devices in the quarter. This had a direct impact on sales, and Android grew 1,580% year-on-year to 7.9 million units from 470 thousand units a year ago. The iOS increased 66% in 4Q10 compared to 4Q09 as more operators launched the iPhone4. The new Windows Phone 7 from Microsoft reversed its fortunes and grew 18% year-on-year and 100% sequentially. The growth was limited by the soft launch in most countries (English version only) and the lack of local languages. Nevertheless, the feedback from operators and end-users was particularly promising for the OS.

"The last quarter of 2010 clearly shows the trends for the coming years in Western Europe. The Western European mobile phone market will be dominated by smartphones, and Android will be the king of the hill," said Francisco Jeronimo, European mobile devices research manager, IDC. "Android surged from 4% to 31% market share in less than a year to become the market leader in 4Q10 and the fastest growing operating system ever. IDC estimates at that Android will grow at a 37% compound annual growth rate between 2010 and 2015 in Western Europe, overtaking the overall market growth in the period and that of its direct competitor, the iOS from Apple.

"The recent alliance announced between Nokia and Microsoft will create opportunities for other operating systems to exploit the transition period between Symbian and Windows Phone 7. Android and iOS will fiercely compete to attract all current Symbian users as they will need to migrate to another platform in the future."

Nokia Retains Regional Leadership, LG Dives to Seventh Position

Nokia shipments dropped 11% year-on-year to 19.6 million units, and its market share slipped to 33% in 4Q10 from 39% in 4Q09. This decline was in part due to the 22% fall in feature phones and the underperformance of the company's smartphones, despite the good sales from the new N8, its flagship during the quarter.

Samsung’s good smartphone performance was not enough to reverse the decline in feature phones and total shipments fell 2% from the previous year, but rose 13% sequentially. The Galaxy S was a top seller in most countries and a direct competitor to the iPhone4.

Apple kept its market share despite the 66% year-on-year growth in shipments. The iPhone4 continued to be a top seller for most operators in Europe, with strong support in terms of advertising and marketing campaigns.

Sony Ericsson shipments fell 15% year-on-year, despite the 3,121% growth in its Android smartphones. The phone maker shipped 2.2 million smartphones and 2 million feature phones. The X10 and X10 mini were top selling devices in most countries and operators.

RIM's shipments increased 67% year-on-year to 3.8 million units from 2.3 million units a year ago. This growth was the result of a successful portfolio with prepaid offers and strong campaigns across major operators in Europe. The BlackBerry maker experienced growth over 200% in several countries in Western Europe and was the smartphone market leader in the U.K. in 4Q10.

I think I'll most likely get whichever tablet has has been received the best when HC 3.1 comes out.

Gcubed, do you have your Xoom OC'd? Performance vs Battery?

I am waiting for the Acer Iconia A100, Xoom spec in a 7" form factor, with cheap ass Acer price. Best of both worlds. I expect big sales come Black Friday.

I've been a big Android supporter since preordering the G1 the day they were available (I sold my iPhone around that time - had it hacked to run on T-Mobile) and currently use a Nexus One and a Nook Color. I want a good Honeycomb tablet and was looking at the ASUS Transformer, but I think I'm going to wait until reviews instead of jumping in blindly next month now.

One thing that amuses me (and there's nothing meant to offend anyone here by what I'm about to say) is that GCubed posted that there was around 12 Honeycomb specific/using apps when he did his first impressions of his xoom. I think it was 12, it was somewhere around that number. Apple at their press conference said there was "100" compared to their # of iPad specific apps on their app store. Yeah, they have a lot more iPad apps than what's available RIGHT NOW for Honeycomb, but all I did was smile and think "yay! They think we have a lot more apps then we actually do!" :)

You're right. Black Friday should be awesome. Too bad I don't think I could hold out until then.

I actually thought that they put more than they were. lol Even then, it's still a tiny number by comparison. If the 100 # is true that's some pretty quick growth for a day or two.

Yup. Safe to say the Xoom's the highest spec'd Tegra2 tab for a loong time. I mean what's better? 1.5gb of memory?

The Tab, right on that chart, has better specs...

Though I guess you mean SIGNIFICANTLY better. Kind of hard when the Xoom went all in with the best tech available basically.

yeah no idea, there are like 30 or so now that show up in the tablet section. Maybe he combined things for the galaxy tab, as there are a few of those apps out there, but they dont take advantage of the new panels thing

There are a lot of table optimized apps being updated. A bunch of the apps I have on my phone have been updated with "tablet support" and stuff like that.

I think the tablet section is for apps that are ONLY for tablet.

Apps that have been updated for tablet support won't show up as "tablet only".

So the 100 figure is probably closer.

Yeah, that's what I meant sorry. Even the LG Slate has the 3D thing going on and I'm sure they'll be ones with better displays but fundamentally it's all the same at their best : Tegra 2, 512 to a gig of memory with maybe my holy trinity of ports ( hdmi USB sd card reader ).

The last bit is the reason why samsung's latest offerings don't interest me.

Anyway, doesn't the fact that most apps work and it scales up properly negate the need for tablet apps? The 100 number is bullshit and irrelevant. no-one should give a fuck. Nothing different expected from a press conference, mind.

Even with the split panels thing, the purpose of those is that the same app can work on phones and tablets and look different...

Have Apple keynotes always been like that? Trashing the competition the entire time? Or was that only because the iPad2 was such a minimal upgrade and Android is coming out with a lot of new tablets with much better hardware?
