Anyone grabbing a G2X from T-Mobile? Why or why not?

I have a Nexus One, and I am considering the G2x -- for its bigger screen, front-facing camera, HSPA+, AT&T futureproof'd bands, HDMI-out, Tegra 2 processor and stock Android.

Some concerns/questions that are keeping me from committing to buying one:

1. Screen quality looks like a big downgrade from Nexus One -- AmoLED vs. TFT.
2. Only 512MB RAM; won't be a problem with FroYo/Gingerbread, but I fear it'll be a bottleneck for future iterations of Android.
3. Will the bootloader be locked? Will XDA developers embrace it?
4. Screen resolution isn't qHD.

^^^ I'm sticking with my Nexus One until we get another Nexus Release from Google. Hopefully that phone will have AT&T bands also, so I can sell it off when I jump to Sprint.

Looks like Google pushed a New Market and Music app to some phones in error:

****Removed images*** Guess they didn't like the hot linking.

As we browsed around the Market there were several other notable applications not found elsewhere. There is an app called “Google Gallery 3D New 10.2″, but upon installation it wouldn’t launch; neither would the “Google – Camera v12″ or “Google Desk Clock 10″ apps. There are numerous Sony test apps (such as “Sony test 2″) by developer “pubsite.sony”, and there are also a couple of United States carrier apps that do nothing, eg. “T-Mobile Game app” and “Verizon Billing app"

Certainly looks like my next one...

... for some of the reasons Vyse lists here.

Coming from a G2
1) Not a big deal for me, since I don't have an Amoled screen.
2) Same RAM as G2. Other HTC phones come with 700+ but then again, they have Sense UI to contend with.
3) Hopefully it follows the trend of the Optimus 2X and doesn't. And it already has XDA dev attention.
4) Not a big deal for me.

I wish the Pyramid was next in the Nexus line, but oh well.

Tegra 2 + Reason #3 = Reason enough to get it.

Wish it had the same HSPA+ speeds as the 4G Vibrant (21 to the G2/G2x's 14)**, or even double that to support Tmo's newer speeds (42). I'm jealous of LTE and it shows. Oh. It has a different button layout than the Eris and the G2. That's sure to annoy me initially.

My upgrade is due on Monday, and I've decided on the HTC Incredible S. I'm guessing it will be a massive step up from my horrendous 18 months of the Nokia N97, so quite looking forward to it.

Gonna give this thread a good read. Will be waiting for the official 2.3 update, rather than modding.

yeah, i've been off contract for about 2 months now on att. i was all over the bionic, but if the leak of Verizon's launch plans is true and the SGS2 is coming out around the same time as the Bionic i may bail to that. The hardest thing is giving up the Nexus One, but i can't stand ATT anymore

I think I'll hold off on the G2X for another Nexus phone. Really enjoy my Nexus One. I'm suggesting the G2X to my friend, though. She has a five year old Blackberry.

Even the Mytouch 3G would be a good recommendation coming from a 5 year old blackberry. lol

I was thinking about the G2x, but I'm gonna wait to see what HTC has going on later this year.

I recently renewed my contracts, so I'm tied for two years, though I'm sure I'll be able to break contract once ATT deal completes.

I've had an N1 since launch basically, and like others, it's hard to give up. I've played with a G2/NS/Mytouch 4G and none of them feel the same to me.

EDIT:

More fragments for android:

I have the slim hope that HTC puts 1gb RAM into the Pyramid/D-HDS but every source says 768 MB.
Seven days till the reveal. There are even rumours that it gets released the same day but i think that is b-shit.
Max 550€ and i'm in but not if it has only 1200/1300mAh battery ! I think i'm still going to get at least 400€ for my Desire DH.

i dont really see the large benefit of 1g... i guess its longevity, but the only reason why the atrix has 1gb is because of webtop, its not accessbile

Looks like ther merging is coming along nicely for honeycomb on smaller devices:

Can someone with a xoom install it, and see if it works. It should since all the assets appear to be there, I'm just super curious.

New Camera, gallery, desk dock. Which I'm sure is just the universal versions being put together.

I just hope for less glossy menus (I rather see more Gingerbread menus). Does the Honeycomb Music App have that much gloss around it?

the top section in honeycomb is transparent, not like that

That's nice to hear.
This Music App seems to be the same design that we saw months ago, before Gingerbread was released.

Too bad Duartes didn't have the time to work more on Gingerbread, the Gallery App and Camera App stick out like sore thumbs.

the gallery app is imo so much nicer on honeycomb, looks more in tune with the OS and is soooo much faster.

The three big things I want from stock Android music player are volume controls on the screen, tapping album art to see the whole album's track listing, and built in podcast management that doesn't play podcasts while the whole library is on shuffle.

I'm thinking of getting one to replace my N1. Running out of internal space and would really like to upgrade to something until a new Nexus is announced.

Gapless playback.

It is absurd how my N1 constantly runs out of internal storage. WTF. I shouldn't have to move stuff to the SD. Really wanting a new Nexus phone. I won't give up my N1 for anything else, despite it being 15 months old.

Hey Android heads. I'll be snagging up an Xperia Play as my first Android device later this month when it comes out. It'll be a significant improvement to my current Motorola W755, lol. I know it's probably not the best Android handset, but I am a sucker for buttons.

I'm drafting up an OT for it that'll be posted in the Gaming forum. Let me know if I've gotten any information wrong or there's a critical piece of information that's missing.

I'm jonsing for a new phone too and sadly I think a vanilla phone coming from HTC is very unlikely in the future. They really are getting in the trenches with Sense.

Are there even any rumors about a new Nexus? It would probably come from Motorola, i'm assuming. What would it need to have to be considered a nexus phone besides updates direct from google? Tri/Quad-core, 2 gb RAM, mirco usb 3.0/micro thunderbolt, 4.3" or bust, new display tech, etc etc.

It would be really cool to have a like a 'Unity' phone with the top android manufacturers putting there best tech in one phone.

Samsung - Display and CPU
HTC - Design
Motorola - ?????
Sony - Camera and PS Certified

Why do you hate me? I'm in the US, so I'm also having to wait. I haven't heard anything from Verizon about when we're suppose to get it.

I know i know. There is no large benefit. But if i'm going to fork out 500-600€, it should be up with the competition (S2 and Atrix). The LG Optimus Speed shows that it's good with 512MB but still.
Don't get me wrong, it's no deal breaker at all. Touchwiz and Motoblur are not for me and i really like Sense (although i'm going to put C7 on my DHD soon) so the coming HTC phone dual core phone is my first choice. The S2 comes second then Optimus Speed and Atrix.
Good time to be a smartphone geek.

It's available on Virgin Mobile in the UK too. Dunno if it's on our website but it's definitely available in stores.

EDIT: Also I could give you my personal impressions too, but be warned I found the device to be a big letdown.

Thanks for the heads up. I was going by press releases for the international carriers since I haven't the foggiest what the names are for carriers outside the US.

I won't be filling the OP with impressions. People are free to post their impressions about the phone once the topic is up. I'm getting the phone myself, but I certainly don't intend for the OT to be a big circle jerk.

My AT&T contract is ending in July. Should I renew my contract and get an Android or iPhone4 or end my contract and go Verizon to get an Android? I was going to get the new iPhone model coming out this year but it seems like it won't come out before my contract ends.

Well its my understanding that the phone portion of the atrix doesn't have access to all the memory as its reserved for webtop even when its not running

Neat... too bad I can't actually use google.com/music and I already played around with the streaming settings in the old version

You can still wait for it if iOS is the way you wanna go.

So under running apps, my xoom's total memory available is only like 550mb.

So I assume the rest is going into running honeycomb? Isnt that a alot? Will future updates make better use of that RAM?

How is using ram not a good use of ram?

I'm just wondering if the pros of th iOS and iPhone 4 outweighs the pros of the Android OS and market.

Android uses RAM very differently than a normal OS.

Android likes to keep some applications loaded into memory, so that when you access them they are readily available in the state you left it in. So, the application is "on" in the background but not using up actual resources. What you want to keep track of is how much CPU is being used and not how much RAM.

Note, killing application/tasks will also mean that Android will have to load it up again next time which can also increase battery usage.

good to know.

Is there a cpu meter widget for android?

SGS2 looks great. Not a big fan of the button design on the bottom though. It makes an otherwise sleek device look slightly tacky.

Looks crazy thin, but at the same time uncomfortable. I assume one of the variants will be Nexus S style in terms of shape.

From the leaked apk it seems you can hit the name of the artist to see all their albums, hit the album name to see the track listings, and hit the track to add it other playlists. All from the now playing screen of course. Stuff that should be standard since the Rio Karma was released.

Wait so task killers are bad for battery life?

YES!!

Not to say they can't be entirely useful, but with Android 2.2 and forward, memory management has been improved very well. If you hop on over to XDA, you will see they don't recommend using task killers anymore for Android.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=678205

I recommend getting WatchDog and see your running applications. If the applications are built well, Android will be very easily be able to manage memory needed and free it for new applications.

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zomut.watchdoglite&feature=search_result

E.g. two screens below from Watchdog Lite. Apps using RAM but no CPU:
