Upgraded to Gingerbread on my Droid X. I had to RDSLite whatever it and then completely wipe everything. Then installed 2.2, then 2.3, then got all my apps back.

Whew. But now it works like a charm!
Care to post a walkthrough? I'd love to do this, but have no clue where to start.

nandroid backups - Whats the haps on the craps?

So, If I'm running GB leak right now, but prior I was running stock rooted froyo on my d2, could I, in theory, boot into clockwork, restore my back up, and I'm off GB - or do I still need to SBF to get back?
It is a different kernel so you need to sbf all the way to 2.2 and reinstall 2.3. Personally I am going to stay on the first leak at least til root is figured out.

Hideous.

So has anybody figured out how to fix the CM7 stable issues with Youtube videos? I'm on my EVO and I've seen some things at XDA and the CM forums with other people having the issues.

Step 1: Factory reset your phone. You can do this by holding HOME and POWER while booting up your phone. Use the volume buttons to scroll to "Factory Reset". Reset your phone, then reboot it. You will have to reactivate your phone with Verizon, so dial *228 and get that puppy activated.

Step 2: Go here and follow all the steps.

Step 3: You're done.

If you don't factory reset your phone your apps don't play nice. You can backup all your apps and such with a cloud program or simply drag them to your computer. I only needed to do that RDSLite thing because I royally fucked up (by not having stock 2.3.340) and couldn't even get to the recovery mode to pop up.

It's really easy, and now I know what to do in the future.

Um, did anyone post this?

http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/kyocera-echo-review/

Kyocera Echo is Engadget's highest rated Android phone? I don't believe they given anything a 9 recently. Weird.

If that's not Engadget trolling Android I don't know what is.

Outside of reporting the lost phone to my cell provider, is there any way to wipe the data from the phone remotely. I'm specifically worried about my gmail password, someone accessing my amazon stuff, etc.

I've been down on Engadget coverage lately. I hate that they editorialize right in their headlines these days. At least save the fanboy squeals for the article. Also, the majority of reviews are just comparisons to iOS devices and why they fall short.

you could just change your passwords.

The Last 6 big Android Reviews on Engadget and mentions of the iphone.

1. Desire S - One mention.
We found ourselves reverting to landscape mode to type comfortably, which is a little galling on a 3.7-inch device when the 3.5-inch iPhone has shown that portrait touchscreen keyboards need not be a chore to use.

2. Sony Xperia Arc - 0 mentions of iPhone or Apple

3. Sony Xperia Play - 0 mentions of iPhone or Apple

4. HTC incredible S - 1 mention
Pinch-to-zoom and scrolling smoothness were also good, however not quite up to the iPhone 4's gold standard.

5. HTC Thunderbolt - 1 mention
For comparison's sake, it's right around 20 percent heavier than an iPhone 4.

One of those three mentions is an inarguable fact.
The other two, while matters of opinion, aren't that outlandish. In fact, I think the majority of users experienced with both platforms would concede that iOS does in fact have a better on screen keyboard and smoother more responsive PTZ.

Word of advice from a Jeff to a Jeff.
Read the actual site you're dissing.

It's not just reviews though, it's all over their coverage. And maybe they're having a bit of a lull in the Apple comparisons, but on the whole it's their go to device for explaining things. I know that everything gets compared to the market leader, but come on, not all of us have an iPhone or iPad behind us for reference.

Engadget isn't the only guilty party though, many sites do this.

I think it has more to do with the fact that the average reader doesn't give a shit if function X is better in the Incredible than in the Desire, but they do give a shit if it is better than in the iPhone. That's why it's the same over most sites, because that's the comparison most people want to hear, and the comparison that matters the most.
It's not a good review if it doesn't answer the questions most people will have.

I'm to the point now where I should just own an iPhone 4 so I can use it as a reference tool. I might as well, since many reviews are just based right off of it.

I don't like it in game reviews either. "Game X is taking what game Y did, and adding a few new features."

Ok, cool, but what if I didn't play game Y?

I take it you have to somehow back up your contacts too? This may be the easiest way for me to get back to stock Android on my X, but I want to make sure I can get my contacts back and stuff.

EDIT: If I plug my X into my PC as a USB Mass Storage can I just copy and paste all the files onto my pc, then paste them back in after resetting the phone? Will that contain my contacts, etc?

Kyocera Echo looks amazing. I really hope the form factor catches on and they bake dual screen support into Android soon.

Then you're in the minority. When a phone is the gold standard, it only makes sense to compare it to that phone. It's what most people can relate to. I mean, you'd be right if the entire review was a comparison chart but it's not. I think they do a pretty good job at keeping the fanboyism in reviews to a minimum.

Your contacts will automatically back up through Google Sync.

Are you adverse to loading up the older version of GB that was recently released so you can have root? If so you could download Titanium Backup and backup all of your apps.

Does it work just as well?

I am rooted now with Z4 (just wont show the "unroot" button) and have titanium backup. If the slightly older version works fine and keeps root I could do that. Is it easy to do?

I don't want to though
well, there are several remote wipe options, but they all have to be set up before you lose your phone.

if your contacts are Google contacts and not Phone Contacts, you don't have to back them up, they'll be restored when you enter your google account and password when you set up the phone again.

Same method as the newer version. What software version are you on now? I am guessing 2.2?

Android 2.2,

System 2.3.34

It will be a piece of cake. All you need to do is download Koush Droid X recovery bootstrap. Download the gbroot version from here. Bootstrap the recovery. Make a backup. Then install .zip after the backup is finished. It will install Gingerbread and you will be all set.

As a note, if the phone goes into a bootloop it is ok. You didn't do anything wrong all you need to do is pull the battery. Finally I recommend doing a factory reset after the ROM is loaded up.

To get back into bootstrap you need the Droid 2 version not the Droid X it doesn't work with GB.

Feel free to PM me with any questions that you might have.

Just figured out why when booting into recovery in GB (DX) why search wouldn't do anything. It is now pressing both the volume buttons.

Good info for anyone that is looking to throw on ROMs and stuff.

So, HTC's Twitter confirmed that Sense 3 is exclusive to the Evo 3D, Sensation, Flyer and newer devices. Their old ones will be left behind, not updated. I'm guessing it's a RAM thing?

Sense is taking 5MB on my Thunderbolt and I have plenty left. Hope that's not an excuse. 512MB devices shouldn't be held back either.

edit: Might be a dual-core thing.

My employer was kind enough to upgrade my crappy Blackberry leash to a DroidX leash. Time to put a lot of the info here to good use.

Can't be that. The Sensation has the same RAM as the Desire HD/Tbolt/Inspire 4G/Desire S/Incredible S

I guess it's due to the processor.

As long as HTC updates the actual Android software, I could really take or leave HTC 3.0

My friend was just telling me a couple hours ago how he hopes he'll get Sense 3.0 on his Mytouch 4G. Can't be a RAM thing either; he has the same amount of RAM as the Sensation!

My guess is that they'd stop updating android along with sense for those phones - no real reason other than that I doubt they'd cause their userbase to shift from one layout to another

Probably has more to do with their store and related DRM. (See netflix situation)

Wonder if they'll still update the OS but with a lower sense version. (Probably not, lol)

edit: Amazon App of the Day :

EZ PDF Reader

Is there any way to change the default music player? Currently it is "music" but id prefer it if the app would be "Amazon MP3 player" now that I have cloud music going on. It works fine when just listening to music, but when in my car the phone defaults to the music app when streaming audio, even if the Amazon one is already playing, resulting in double audio.

Wouldn't be that bad if I only had to fix it once a car trip, but it also defaults back after every phone call and notification noise :( had to fix stuff like 5 times on my way home from work yesterday.

I only got my Incredible S on Monday :(

I have been using LauncherPro anyway. Will these older phones still be getting Android 2.3 in the near future?

Not sure if anyone's interested but Amazon is selling the ViewSonic gTablet 10" through the Gold Box for $279 today.

1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 - Dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU
512MB DRR RAM
16GB internal memory (expandable up to 32GB via SD Card)
Android 2.2 (Froyo)
10.1-inch TFT-LCD with LED driver system and 1024x600 resolution.
