Which makes the Transformer still the pad to be OEM wise.

I'm still pissed that I cannot buy it for retail price. By then I'm sure the Transformer 2 pad will come out before they can get their damn stock up in the stores.

Is there no Gingerbread ROMs over on the Epic side of things? The Captivate has had GB stuff for quite a while now.

It is nice, though, seeing Samsung actually starting to update their stuff more regularly. I'm all about custom ROMs, but the faster they update the stock firmware/kernels, the faster sweet custom ROMs come out.

I don't know if it's been posted yet but...

One of mobile’s biggest games – Plants vs Zombies has been in the works for a while and PopCap has confirmed that its release is imminent. It’ll be here at the end of this month and will be offered exclusively through Amazon’s Appstore.

It wasn’t said whether or not this would be available through the Android market after some time (like Rovio did with Angry Birds Rio) but you will be happy to know that it will be free when it launches May 30th. You’ll have to take advantage on that day, though, because they’ll be setting the price at $2.99 from there on out.

I’ve played this game on numerous platforms, and while I may be all Plants vs Zombie’d out, I can’t wait to take it for a spin on Android when it finally does debut.

Got sick of T-Mobile MySense and bloat pretty quickly. Found a rom (Royal Panache) which is pretty much stock gingerbread with Sense 2.1.

Rooting was not as daunting once you've read a dozen guides. So happy I took the plunge.

Now is there anything like Airprint? Anything that's available once rooted?

Personally, the lack of stock sd card support is less an issue than the lack of 3.1 support for the eee. At the very least, I can solve 1 of those problems on my own. Cant do anything about the performance disparity at the moment however.

To be fair though, soon as 3.1 hits the eee, there would be almost nothing the xoom has over it.

there's a CM7 alpha and a leaked ED12 build, but neither is ready for daily use. ACS currently has a leaked EE03 build that they're testing and waiting on their source to OK the release on it, and it's supposed to be stable AND THE FM RADIO IS ENABLED!!!

No one beats Apple at battery life.
True but the iPhone 4 is also .7" smaller. Though it is pushing more pixels.

No idea why manufacturers are slimming phones down so much. Use that space for battery life! It is far more beneficial.

Someone listen to this man. I want a 4.5 inch phone that's an inch thick that can play video for 24 hours. :)

AT&T Customers To Be Very Angry Again!

Any kind of tips for battery life? I haven't done any solid testing, but it's looking like I would get under 2 hours of near constant use of apps or such that use data, or general internet browsing on my Nexus S. This is a bit on the poor side, especially when i'm used to about double that.

I checked the battery page in settings and everything seems to be operating normally, nothing sapping the battery. Outside of doing the obvious like messing with screen brightness, i'm out of luck, aren't I?

File management is the biggest thing that the EEE Pad has over all other tablets... period. Not even the iPad 2 can do this which is mind boggling. With 3.1 hitting the Transformer in June, it still remains the tablet to beat.

File management? Elaborate.

Edit: Things you cant do on ios devices that you can on android, is hardly mind boggling. Just that, the things ios does do, it does incredibly smooth.

Anyone who has battery issues I implore to install Spare Parts. Its from the Android Source Repository but someone has placed it on the market. There is a section where you can see how long your phone has been "awake" for (as opposed to sleep which it should be if the screen is off) and can check what apps are keeping it from sleeping.

Majority of the time people have some app (facebook is a big offender for me) that is keeping the phone from sleeping and thus draining the battery 24/7

Hi, AndroidGAF

My W800 stopped working and I need a new phone. Seems like a couple of new stuff will come soon to Yurop, right?

How much of an improvement will the new HTC or Galaxy 2 be compared to, lets say, the Desire HD my brother has? Or the Nexus S. Galaxy whatever. I´m not got with phones.

I want it for

-web browsing
-watching vids
-phone calls (really)
-taking pictures of my cat being cute or other random stuff I don´t want to get my digicam for

Yeah. I guess that makes improved battery life and screen quality more important than dual-cores, but I might be wrong.

PS: The Desire HD is pretty cool already, but I don´t really like having to click the button to activate it every time. It´s just a tad to big for one handed use to check the time or stuff.

SD Card = File Management. Plain and simple, a tablets inability to do so is the biggest obstetrical to completely over taking netbooks, the EEE Pad remedied this with the micro sd slot working out of the gate.

Galaxy S did, so S2 should as well. Of course... paying for that tethering.... your mileage will vary.

good to know. but i don't have to pay anything. i once surfed 3 days with the hotspot and watched a ton of youtube vids and stuff all day without any problems afterwards. Paying for tethering is a US thing i think. Here in germany i personaly don't know a carrier where you have to pay for it.

Xoom purchased and updated, I have 14 days to enjoy this :lol. Hopefully it does.

Edit: Was playingw ith it before 3.1 the performance increase is no joke. 3.1 is very nice! I sat at the lock screen for a few seconds just playing with the animation for shits and giggles, so much better.

Asus is suppose to have Transformers in plenty of stock on 20th, so that's 4 days with the xoom then I'll take it back and get the Transformer and use the money I get back to buy...random shit.

Yeah... I thought you were in Europe Donos so hence why I wasn't sure.

Good! I was trying early I9000 Gingerbread roms on my Captivate all weekend, and they all seem to have the same problems. Google Music doesn't work, battery drain's terrible, and browser scrolling sticks. I guess I'll switch back to Froyo until this comes out.

Regardless of any specific phone, isn't the hotspot feature built into Android itself since Froyo?

Just put 2.3 on my original droid

http://www.peteralfonso.com/2011/02/download-stock-rooted-gingerbread.html

All good and love gingerbread, but I have a question for anyone using the new GOOGLE MUSIC app.

How do you set ringtones with an MP3 now? When there was a Music app, you just long pressed the song playing and set as ringtone use to be an option...i can't find it anymore. I have the mp3s on the SD card, how the heck do I set them to a ringtone?

You should still have the other music app on there, use that one for the ringtones.

Settings>Sound>Phone Ringtone. Any MP3 on the SDCARD should appear in that list

That sucks seeing as the Amazon AppStore is US only.

Agreed, it's ridiculously annoying, by making it exclusive to Amazon they are blocking out a large portion of the market - I wonder how much Amazon is paying these devs for exclusivity

They probably all get a free year's worth of Amazon Prime.

Is there a reason my contacts would now all be listed twice? I exported my contacts list, restored my phone to factory settings, and imported my contacts, which are now listed twice.

Depends. It's possible you have duplicated them in your google account by importing them. (You don't need to, it's part of your gmail contact list). The other reason is if they exist on your sim card, they will show up twice.

Need more details, account type/phone/etc.

...aaaand I just figured it out. I guess what happened was that before the contacts could be restored from my google account, I restored them from USB and those contacts were added to the 'other contacts' label, and thus the contacts were duplicated twice on my google account. Which would explain why deleting the contact database and backups didn't fix the problem.

Aside from the Music issue, which sucks, I haven't had any of those issues on my Captivate. Battery life has increased with every different ROM I've tried, both Froyo and GB (Darky --> Serendipity --> CM7 --> GR-12). I think most of that is because the battery life was so shit to start with, so improving on that was easy. I can easily get a full day of heavy use out of GR-12 now, though. And I'm not sure what browser you use, but I've been using Miren for a while, after someone here on GAF suggested it. It works fine for me, with no lag or odd scrolling. Pinch zooming works fine too, very smooth.

Most of the ROMs do have issues, for sure, but for me the improvements they bring much outweigh the negatives that stock Froyo has.

can't you set mp3's as ringtones in the android settings and also in the profile views?

Hey guys I was trying to if I could get gingerbread running on my samsung galaxy indulge. Some searching around shows that's not happening. Anyone suggestions in the meantime?

Amazon prepping dual-core ‘Coyote’ and quad-core ‘Hollywood’ tablets for 2011

amazon-devices110513190503.png

We received word from a tipster that Amazon, practically confirmed to be entering the tablet market in the near future, isn’t planning just one device, but is planning on releasing at least two before the end of the year. Information is light, but we have been told that the “entry” level tablet, codenamed “Coyote” will be based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform. The big boy? That’s codenamed “Hollywood” and will be based on the NVIDIA T30 “Kal-El” which will bring a screaming quad-core processor with a 500% performance increase over the dual-core Tegra 2. No word on screen sizes at this point, and we’re digging for more information, so stay tuned!

I think I'm gonna start rubbing one out every time I see Tegra 3 mentioned in this thread from now on.

Goddamn it android is so stupidly designed.

Someone sends me a picture in an mms

i click the picture to open it in the gallery app. but i cant do shit it with it there! i press the menu button and nothing happens!

i have to press the picture and hold it and then save it and then back out to the menu screen and RELOAD the goddamn gallery app and its retarded ui and animations THEN i can select what i want to do with it. im done. im out. maybe this will be easier in the future but as of now i have had enough frustrations with android. its a platform with great potential and great ideology to some extent but it just doesnt work for me as well as i would like.

is there something about android that i just do not understand on a fundamental level? why doesnt this make sense to me?
if i use astro to view photos from mms there is an immediate share function, however it CRASHES the gmail process everytime. its broken.

You need to understand that the fact there is no set guideline for how the MENU buttons are positioned from device to device is a representation of the many, many problems with android. While you may think its a nitpick, to me it is a functional anecdote to demonstrate just how weak android is once you start to analyze the way a user interacts with it. If a functionality as basic and primal as where you press to do something varies from device to device how android succeed as a whole?

or are you in fact agreeing with me? there are a couple ways i can interprate your statement.
apologies if i misread you at first.

The default messaging app is trash. Instead of saving the picture and opening up for you, it just shows you a preview view of the image. Shitty applicaiton.

why not put GPA 15 on it? he's had like 4 versions since that came out, all with improvements.

I was using his GPA 13, which was great, except for one little thing: messaging would get kicked out of memory. I moved to Ultimate Droid 3.3.1, also GB based, which has a 'lock messenger app in memory' option, but it's had it's own fair of problems.

I will probably try his GPA 15 and mess around with autostarts to see if i can't whitelist messaging, but missing texts to me was just unacceptable. Hope you have better luck than I did, but we've finally reached the point where the absolute hardware limitations of this phone are showing themselves.

Edit: and to answer your question about music: are you using the stock app? i believe UD 3.3.1 has the stock GB music app and when i long press a song i see a 'use as phone ringtone' option.

Also, check out Peter Alfonso's low voltage kernals as well, if you're not already using one (version two is out and they runn 600-1.3 ghz i think, OG droid only)

I'd tell you to stop using the default messaging app, but with all the frustration you've shared with us the last couple of pages, I think its best for your sanity if you just leave the ecosystem all together. Try ios or windows phone 7. I'm sure one of those will better suite your os functionality needs.

Yeah, I think I am going back to iOS. I'm still open to ice cream being a completely different ballgame, but thats just one potential future for android. It could still have the same problems.

Its a difficult conundrum, my first smart phone experience was the sidekick2 back in 2004, aside from a brief six months with a blackberry pearl, I used the SK2 until the day the original iphone launched. I used the iphone until the day the droid1 launched. I left ios because I had different, but just as frustrating issues with iOS as I'm having with android right now.

I am very aware of the fact that a part of my frustration is with the device itself, not android. But the experience ive had with android over the last 19 months has been way more frustrating than anything else.

There is nothing novel for me about the concept of a smartphone because its more or less been the only type of cellphone I have ever known. I had a dumbphone for a year before I got the sidekick, but I was like 16 and in highschool and only used it to call my parents. it wasnt until i got the sidekick that I realized how useful it is to have an internet connection in your pocket.

since then though, i have only been able to be critical of smartphone OSs because they ultimately dont adhere perfectly to the way I wish to use them, so I focus on the negatives instead of the positives, because focusing on the positives doesnt force you to be a more effective user.

the whole thing is a problem, the reason i use the default messaging app is because the appmarket is a horror to use. its just a web of problems that lead to my frustration, not just the bad messaging app. i see people throw around handcent from time to time, what would you personally recommend i try?
