Android 2.2 I thought, not even 2.3... meh
Just going by what the vizio guy says in the video. He said Gingerbread. *shrugs* guess we'll see.

Also working on Honeycomb, but not ready yet.

Yeah honeycomb won't support their resolution. Until it does not much to "work on"

At least gingerbread made it, if its fully skinned guess its not a huge deal unless you want nice apps (how few there are)

not a fan of the review. Seems overwhelmingly negative on Sense, when every other review of 3.0 seems positive, and WiMax for no real reason except "seems like old news now that other 4G technologies exist"- Ignoring that 4G coverage and speeds between the 4 networks are not equivalent. For some Wimax is the better option.

The battery life actually seems on par with my experience with the Evo4G- in fact the EVo4G routinely got worse than 14 continuous hours before the gingerbread update.

edit: from gizmodo's review of the evo 4G:

The gingerbread update improved things quite a bit (I wonder what was sucking down all that power before?) but saying 14 or so hours of casual use is "worse" than the EVO4G is flat out false.

I agree that the lack of 1080p recording is disappointing, and claims that the two 5MP cameras actually only shoot 2MP images (??) in 3D is really confusing- the second camera is only ever active during 3D, so why is it 5MP?

I'd like to see another outlet's take on this.
yeah, hating manufacturer addons is in style nowadays, reviewers want that pure google experience!

and maybe it's just cheaper buying and installing the 5MP cameras in bulk vs two different cameras.

You know how people love phones with keyboards? The larger the keyboard, the better right?

How bout a small phone with a TINY keyboard that has a screen embded inside the keyboard?

Confused?

bahahahahaahahahaahahahaahahahaahahaah!

The Evo 3D is a huge disappointment but I am not surprised its basically the same phone just faster with 3D. I am going to root my hero and put 2.3 and hope that gets me through another couple months. I'm hoping against hope the iphone 5 comes to sprint.

hey now, some people liked it!

So let's ignore 3D for a second. The EVO 3D is fast, sleek, up to date, and packs a pretty great qHD display. The 2D camera is pretty good (if not a little grainy) and shoots video in 1080p (update: our version only seems to shoot up to 720p in 2D mode; we're investigating and will get back to you!). HTC has made a worthy successor to the EVO 4G.

still down on the battery life though...

.Internally, EVO 3D's got a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon Scorpion MSM8660 with Adreno 220 GPU, 1GB RAM, 4GB ROM (expandable via microSD). Connectivity includes FM Radio, 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, an assortment of sensors, and of course tri-band CDMA / EVDO Rev. A and WiMAX. In general, the 1730 mAh battery seems to less less than six hours sticking to 4G and less than a full day over (10 hours or so in regular use) without. Call quality was okay — not great, but okay.

wow at the negative EVO 3D reviews. I wish I knew more about smart phones to properly guage these reviews. So I'm a bit confused though, maybe I'm reading this wrong but it seems like the reviewers are implying that the battery life is about 14 hours with most of the time spent on standby. Is that about what's expected for smart phones?

droidGAF,

I'm thinking about going 'droid... but I've seen some Samsung stuff available in the shops: the i9003 and the Galaxy Ace.

Primary use is not really as a daily phone, but mainly for testing web app development (HTML5) and dicking around with a touchscreen phone. So some of my concerns is the upgrades of the OS (2.3 and up), speed, touchscreen responsiveness and build quality.

Since they're dirt cheap (around 250 USD average), so what's the verdict on these two?

And if you have other brands to suggest (HTC,LGs) they're welcome as well.

14 hours on standby is awful battery life

for perspective, the Galaxy S II gets 710 hours on standby. I'm not sure what you're asking though, are you curious to the usage time, or standby time?

Are these reviewers gauging usage time or standby time? B/c from what I read, they seemed to not be using the phone much and it drained quickly (checked an email and snapped a few photos). Anyways, seems like I should look for a different phone since the EVO 3D's battery life no matter how you cut it is up to par. At this point, I'm looking for a solid 4G phone with good battery that'll allow me to tether my ipad for internet access on the go. Can anyone recommend such a phone (on Sprint)?

Your info is out there. Might as well stalk yourself to make sure others aren't doing it for you.

Luckily I share a name with a very prominent public figure, and I can pin anything on them.

Fekking FedEx. I should have known, if you order something on Wednesday with "2nd Day 7PM shipping," that means, 5th day 7PM shipping. Wouldn't matter but I'm going on vacation on Sunday out of state, so the only real reason I bought a new phone now was because I wanted to take it with me after pretty much reaching my limit with the OG Droid.

Grrrr.

I don't really know what to make of the EVO 3D reviews. Some are saying horrible battery, but others are saying it's a little better than the EVO 4G. At this point I'm going to assume that the battery life *should* be a little better, but what concerns me most is the call quality issue. I have to wonder if those preview units have some incorrect settings or if the phone is really worse.

Given the EVO 3D's troubling battery life..

Any recommendations? I really need to replace my current phone at this point...

You're gonna have to with either the Nexus 4G or Moto Photon 4G if you want to go with Sprint.

Xoom 2?

Backstory: Verizon uploaded an ad earlier today that featured an unannounced Honeycomb tablet. The ad has since been pulled, but Droid-life snagged a screenshot of the back.

Given the aesthetics, I assume it's the Xoom 2 (speaker holes in particular are the same style).

I'm still going to look at the E3D, but the Photon 4G would also be a great phone, whenever it comes out. Of course there's always the Galaxy S2, but again there's the issue of not knowing when it'll be available (or if the GPS will work properly).

Galaxy Tab 10.1 or something else, it wouldn't be the xoom 2. There is nothing to be added to the xoom at this point in time to warrant a xoom 2, and the actual xoom 2 which i would assume would use kal el, is too far away to warrant a placement in an ad, or an ad about it

Uh, did you miss the whole Motorola leak a few weeks back that confirmed the Xoom 2 -- and even had a tiny picture of it?

The back of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 doesn't look like that.

Edit: Worst case scenario, it's a generic tablet mock-up. However, the video was pulled, and it matches the design aesthetic of the Xoom. Where there's smoke, there's oftentimes fire.

Interestingly, this EVO 3D review says that the battery life is a bit improved over the EVO 4G, but the radios were complete crap: http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=8329

The variance between EVO 3D reviews is a bit alarming, but I'll probably still check it out for myself.

it actually doesn't say the radios are crap, it says...

As for 3G, out in NJ where 4G isn't live yet, I was able to spend a weekend with the EVO 3D using EVDO-only coverage. How well did this work? In a word: disaster. The EVO 3D barely held onto one bar most of the time. This led to missed calls, plenty of repeat dials, and several dropped calls. Not good. As for 3G data performance, it was better than voice performance for sure. Speeds were decent, and 3G browsing sessions were acceptably quick, even with only one bar. At my home in NJ, one bar is pretty typical for Sprint. It performed on par with other Sprint 3G devices.

This reviewer tested it at his home which has ridiculously weak sprint coverage- No matter how good the phone is, it's not going to magically create coverage where it doesn't exist.

clarification: My office in new jersey is a "one bar" area and the Evo4g WILL drop calls here, and waffle between sprint coverage and roaming. No way would I consider testing a phone here for review. My home in philly? Rock solid. performance is night and day.

It says it barely held onto one bar and dropped calls, but that every other sprint 3g device performs the same.

Wi Max not being able to hold onto a signal while in motion is a known problem with WiMax though.

what would it have in it to warrant a xoom 2 this early? nothing. There was a motorola leak but that means nothing about a product being imminent. If you are releasing a product in September you dont advertise in the beginning of June.

Copernicus... google's fault, not moto's. Dont make me defend motorola, it makes me feel dirty

ah true. I dont want to see a xoom 2 until the xoom 1 has LTE. Me and the 45 other 3G xoom owners are going to start fires

For those who may not know, Netflix is now officially supported on DroidX with Android 2.3.3. I'm a happy camper. I was hesitant to use the non-official version with the device check disabled as I wouldn't want to risk any potential problems.

I did some playing around and it works great over WiFi and 3G (even with the poor 3G bandwidth I get from my home).

Maybe the killer feature for the Xoom 2 will be... LTE-ready, day 1.

I wouldn't put it passed Motorola.

Awesome! How do you like it so far? I'm really considering getting one soon.

I love it! Though I using a BB before this, so it could just be Android.

Sense is nice, but very bloated. If a root becomes available, I may do so and put stock Android on it. The phone is fast. Even the bloat that Sense comes with can't slow it down. It does everything really quickly.

Was listening to music earlier, it is on a par with iPhone, but a little worse than some Sony Ericssons that had in the past. The stock handsfree/headphones are dogshit though. Haven't tried much video playback, but I did record some 1080p video and I just watched it back on my PC and it was very, very smooth. Locked to 30fps recording and it doesn't stutter.

Battery life is okayish, I think that is my one complaint. Even then I have used it very heavily today, so in a normal usage situation it would last at least a day before needing to be charged. My commute to and from work is around 90m total and I was using the PDF App to read an e-book, then I surfed on 3G and streamed music from Qriocity. I also spoke to my gf on the way back for 15m. Then I got home and used the Wifi to download loads of apps since my work Wifi requires authentication. It dipped from 100% to 65% in that time, and I played Angry Birds Rio for 30 min to see what all the fuss is about and that sunk it down to 55%.
