Android Thread - 2011 Edition | Stuffed on Gingerbread, Hungry for Honeycomb!

I downloaded and installed SwiftKeyX to give it a try (although I'm not sure I can see myself falling out of love with Swype), and when I try to download the English US language pack I keep getting a network error. I tried downloading it on both Wifi and 3G, and no dice. SwiftKey's support page on the matter simply says "our service is robust, so if there's a problem it's on your end."

http://support.swiftkey.net/knowledgebase/articles/8877-downloading-updating-a-language-module-won-t-work-

Anyone else had this issue?

EDIT: Got it to download after about 20 tries. Their server is probably getting slammed. Perhaps it's not as robust as they claim.

Did they fix the bugs with swiftkey x? My keys were stuck popped up sometimes which required me to switch to another keyboard then switch back.

Had this problem earlier this morning I rebooted my phone and tried again and it worked.

Yeah, I had the same problem this morning. Will try later.

Does Staples not carry the Transformer in stores? That's the only android tablet I'm really interested in.

Its not worth it, don't waste your time.

To people saying Swype is faster: don't dismiss Swiftkey after a couple of minutes of use. It learns from every message or mail you type and after a while it can predict whole sentences. It's crazy efficient, almost scary sometime, like "WTF, am I THAT predictable?"
I tried SwiftKey for about two weeks instead of Swype. Still faster on Swype. Is the X version different?

After having used both, as far as I can tell the only differences are 1) X has three different color schemes you can choose from, and 2) you can let it access your Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter accounts to build a more robust prediction library from the way you type on those networks/programs.

This day is just getting worse and worse:

BlackBerry PlayBook has a newer version of Android than 81% of you

Our pals at CrackBerry are in the midst of testing a recently leaked version of the Android Player app for the PlayBook tablet. And guess what: It's running a newer version of Android than some 80 percent of you guys out there. When last we looked, some 18.6 percent of Android devices were running Android 2.3.x. (Honeycomb devices made up less than 1 percent on top of that.)

And RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook? Why, it's running Android 2.3.3, while some 59 percent of you out there are still officially stuck on Froyo, and another 18 percent are on Eclair.

Food for thought.

Careful, you might get banned like Pristine almost did.

The thread title still cracks me up about being stuffed on gingerbread, when most phones still are stuck in the froyo stone age. I am glad my Evo finally got the bread though.

It does have Netflix now. Its a sexy device if you don't need standard ports. If I didn't have a xoom, that's the one I'd probably get

Wow. I was way off.

Oh, yeah, thanks for that. I was planning to try it this weekend. I am not great at this stuff, but have done one SBF before. I was just hoping the actual root for OTA Gingerbread would come out soon.

EDIT:
The only part I am not sure about is installing from Clockwork, do you just drop the file on your phone then go into Clockwork and there is an install function and you browse for the file?

Those that are rocking android tablets: Any regrets? I feel like I don't need one, but I want one. Haha. I have a netbook that I do a lot of surfing on, I feel like an android tablet (looking at the Acer Iconia) would be much better since I could watch netflix and other videos and even mount it in the car for my kids. I need someone to sell me a little more on it so I can convince my wife, haha. I'm wondering if I should sell my netbook though since it would pretty much cover the same ground.

Also, dont know if you all saw, but Staples has a $100 off coupon on many tablets.

Depends on what you do with the netbook. I have a tablet, but I bought it mostly for work, to display things on, and tie into the cloud data(G Apps).

At home I still fallback to my cr-48 netbook since I'm usually switching between two browser sessions and a a couple of programs.

If alot of your usage is just consuming info, then you should be set. But if you have to interact with websites/data sets that don't have an App interace...I'd stick with the netbook for now.

and follow the section step by step that reads:

You will install part 1 from clockwork recovery, then part 2 immediately after! After the first restart, you may be stuck in a bootloop. Dont panic.

========================================================
Get his rom and install it from clockwork/bootstrap recovery (not the stock one you were just in). Make sure to format data, dalvik and cache (NOT system). Then flash his Rom.

goodluck!

For these two parts, how do I install this stuff? Do I download the files via PC, move it to my phone and somehow find it with clockwork? Clockwork comes up when you reboot your phone right? So from there I find the file?

For the ROM itself do I do the same?

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I prefer a transformer thanks to the memory stick expandability aspect though.

If the staples coupon knocks them both down to the same price, I might just make the jump to the tab instead.

Thanks. The thing with me is that I use my netbook pretty much ONLY for browsing, since I have jolicloud on it. I think I'd actually get more use out of a tablet since it'd be easier for my kids to use, too.

Thanks for the feedback.

haven't had that happen since the old beta, was fine in a newer beta weeks ago.

from what i understand, they only have the Transformer online, and the coupon is only for stores.

dunno if it works on the Tab 10.1, but the latest Netflix works on many tablets. oh wait, it does work.

I love my 3VO so much I'm actually considering going and picking up a Samsung Tab 10.1 with the coupon and then selling my iPad 3G.

Maaaaaaaaaan, decisions decisions.

That $100 coupon has my wallet ready to spring open. Is there any reason to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1 over the Transformer?

you can't use the coupon on the transformer (it's online only) and staples is out of stock even online.

The tab is more expensive though- even with the coupon it's the exact same price as a transformer at MSRP.

Every review I've come across says the transformer is the more versatile of the two (expandable memory, optional dock) but the tab is "prettier" due to form factor. your call.

Android should have dominated the entire tablet market by now(according to some). They can't even ship 31% worth of tablets. Doom and gloom.
we all know how this story ends

hopefully with the tablet market collapsing, netbooks 4 lyf3

Just to help you get some started, some stuff you should look into getting:

Amazon App Store (especially for the free daily app)
Dolphin Browser HD (some argue a better browser than stock)
ES File Explorer (especially good if you want to access files on your network)
Folder Organizer (let's you customize icons and create folders)
FriendCaster Tab(Facebook app optimized for Honeycomb)
JustReader (pretty good RSS Google reader)
Pulse (a very flashy RSS reader, nice to show off)
Komik (great comic book reader for cbr and cbz files)
News360 (grabs news from a bunch of sources, optimized for Honeycomb)
Some sort of dual battery widget so you can see the power level of the dock too
Wizz (a bunch of widgets for Calendar, agenda, mail, Facebook, Twitter, etc)

Okay--- where the F is the Amazon App Store, I cannot find it.

Ah ha. So that is what the side loading of .apk's is all about. Working now boys. Thanks.

The should give it a less cryptic name. Like "Unknown Sources - Allow installation of non-Market applications".

Well honestly its kind of retarded that they even have a disclaimer but whatever.

Wife seemingly approves of the TF as a good web browsing device. I'm beginning to think though that the dock is going to be a must purchase for further use for myself. Love it regardless though as Feedly and Dropbox is amazing on it.

Has anyone tried any remote desktop apps with the Transformer and dock?
If that works well enough, I'm thinking that I could replace my netbook and Nook Color with a Transformer...

It comes with one that works pretty decently well.

I... I think I actually like Sense 3.0. It adds a lot of really nice eye candy and a lot of functionality. The lock screen is genius.
