Android Thread - 2011 Edition | Stuffed on Gingerbread, Hungry for Honeycomb!

This thread is amazing. AndroidGAF is pretty ridiculous with its hatred of anything and everything. Samsung has a press conference and all of a sudden buttons are stupid, the GSII is a piece of shit, and anyone buying a phone these days must be mentally handicapped.

AndroidGAF hates Android

Its not hatred, the GS2 is a fine phone. I was geeking out over a few weeks back if you read the thread.

Its just not new. At all. Its not a new phone! Its not running new software, it has hardware features that we already know will be unsupported in the next iteration of Android, we have no clear picture of what the update schedule is gonna be like, Samsung themselves are putting newer and better hardware in a few short months..

what is there to be excited about? its just another generic phone. 5 months ago it was the most advanced device on the market, but thats going to change VERY VERY soon. Locking yourself into a 2 year contract that will cost thousands of dollars with already dated hardware is just not something most of us are interested in.

Do you want this thread to just be full of Andrex clones creaming their pants at every little buzzword these corporations shoehorn in their press releases? (not a personal attack, you're quite charming in your fanboyism, andrex) Just saying THERE IS A LOT TO BE CRITICAL ABOUT.

What do you expect? We wanna see something new and exciting, and NOBODY is delivering right now. And in my opinion nobody has delivered since the Nexus1/Droid1 era. its been TWO years since theres been something truly exciting in the AndroidPhone space.

You're not gonna get rid of me that easy, Android is still intensely interesting. Its not like I'm gonna stop following news.
So you have decided to stay and whine in this thread instead of the iPhone thread. *bro fist*

there's always something new on the way, but buying something literally a month before new stuff is going to drop is quite a bit different from buying it it 6 months before. and some of the unimpressed people ARE people who have had said device for months and (i have no idea why) have this irrational hate of capacitive buttons and champion the big button look...

Well, if I do get an iPhone obviously I won't be in here whining about my Droid. Which is like 80% of the whine, right there. I'll probably be closer to an impartial third party, but if I think a phone is dumb I'll probably still post about how I think its dumb. I'm not sure why me having an iPhone instead of a Droid would change any of that.

I'll probably be whining a lot more in the iPhone thread. So if you like my whine, you know where to find me.

we cultivate the bitching about the product attitude. we all see a large amount of potential, and that potential being wasted.

I just find the constant stream of "This shit sucks, wait for XXX in a couple months" posts to be quite comical. No one here is seemingly ever happy.

I guess I'm an anomaly here. I have a plethora of phones, all of which run very well, and which I'm quite happy with. Do I want the market to just stop progressing because of that?? Of course not. Advancing tech is always exciting. I just think the group here enjoys bitching about said tech more than they do actually use it.

But whatever. I'll just excuse myself for a while. Carry on.

I think there are three different components to my Android criticism. All unrelated, in my view.

  • Theres my problems with my Droid, which I usually ALWAYS try to make clear I'm aiming my frustration towards that particular device.
  • Theres my problems Android itself/manufacturers skins
  • Theres my frustration of uninspiring hardware

I'm sure a lot of people think of me as a troll, or just another asshole looking to rain on everyone's parade. I think Android was about 100,000x as successful as Google originally anticipated. They didn't put all their eggs in one basket, because thats how they roll. But the consequence of that is their marketshare BLEW UP seemingly overnight, and now they're playing catchup. Which has left a lot of us fans/enthusiasts out in the cold. There are so many things about the Android ecosystem that are just TRULY AWFUL. I'm not gonna go into it, because I always do. But it genuinely bugs me some people aren't as critical about this stuff. Maybe I'm too brash, maybe I use caps instead of italics too much, maybe I'm just an asshole, I don't really know, but I really genuinely care about this stuff.

We shouldn't just be inherently happy with our phones though. Not only are these devices insanely expensive, they also play a very key role in our daily lives. Gcubed said it best, we all see just how much potential there is with this software and these devices, but there doesn't seem to be a manufacturer that "gets it."

manufacturer? Shit, i'm not convinced GOOGLE gets it... and i would say, eh, maybe its just the android team and they'll get it. Then i see Google+, and its the same thing. A shit load of incredible services all silo'ed so what could be a game changer is just a click away

Yeah, Huddle/Gtalk is such a perfect example. I figured for the first few weeks. "eh, they probably just gotta do some stuff on the backend to get all working together."

Nope.

I'm supposed to use Huddle to group text with other Android-using friends, Gtalk to talk to people on Aim or their computers, and Messages to talk to non-Android-using friends?

I'm sorry Google, what?

Don't worry they're bringing Huddles to the desktop browser.

seriously

You forgot hangouts also....which is supposed to going to mobile too. lol

I will say, I was genuinely impressed when my 2y/o non-videochat phone just started piping live video over 3G to my friend's email client with no configuration or app installation. I just clicked a button that wasn't there previously.

They've had a bbm competitor for years but never developed it. Talk should really be huddle, hangouts, voice and messages combined. Google is not very good at the "integration" piece

I don't want to get yelled at for complaining! :)

Why? Why am I supposed to buy a device and not be happy? As I said, I personally am quite happy with my devices. They do all the things in my "daily life" that I want them to. That is where my befuddlement with many people in this thread, and their constant negativity towards things, comes from. I'm not trying to "yell" at people. I'm just genuinely confused with many of the attitudes of people around here. I guess I'm just MUCH more laid back with my wants expectations with my devices.

Apologies for the slight derailment. We now join our previous, grumpy thread, already in progress.... :)

Hey don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy my phone, but it could be so much better. We complain because we care.

The yell comment was tongue in cheek

Personally, I'm pissed off everyday I have to have a Macbook and a cellphone. I'm ready for them to be the same thing. If we were here talking about computers, I'd be the guy fantasizing about having six 15Krpm SCSI drives in RAID 0. Theres just nothing fun, neat, or special about smartphones in my eyes. They're tools. Some of them are decent, some of the suck, but they can ALL be better.

Anyone else try the updated Google Voice app? As long as you've dialed a number once with GV, you no longer need a data connection to make/receive future calls! How is this even possible?! Are these calls charged as minutes by our cell providers?

A day later, I'm still raging that the Galaxy S II isn't coming to Verizon.
I don't know if my phone can make it until the nebulous Droid Prime surfaces in October or November. rrrrrrrrrgh :(

Must be nice to always be complacent. I'm a fan of always keeping tech moving.

GAF is very anti progress.

SGS2 is old news. I wish we had another game changer like the Nexus One release.

It calls a certain number rather than the dialed one.

FUCKING OLD TECHNOLOGY.... How does it work?!

but yeh, lol @ yanks trying to play this phone down just because you had to wait 4 mths.

Oh shut up. The Galaxy SII launched overseas in April. It will be mid September before it touches our shores. And it just so happens that rumors place the next entry in the iPhone line, and the Nexus line a mere 3 weeks to a month later.

So yes, there is a such thing as to late, especially when superior products that happen to be the most popular phones in the MARKET are launching immediately afterwards. Noone is saying the phone sucks, people are saying at this point, they would rather wait for the one that comes a month later. And its not a bad choice at all.

And whats with the 'yanks' bullshit? I really hope you catch a ban for that nonsense.

They have always used your minutes when using Google Voice from a smartphone.

Anyone know any decent cases and holster/clip for the EVO 3D? I'm not looking to spend a whole lot since I don't want it looking like a tank. Just something to cover the phone and let me put it down on a surface without hitting the screen or the camera as well as put on my belt.

Hello good people, two questions are humbly submitted to you for your counsel:

1. If I walked into a US Verizon store TODAY, what's the best Android phone I could get?

2. 2-3 months from now, how much will I regret doing this?

My route home depends on the answers.

(for reference, anything significantly better than my 2-yr-old iPhone 3GS with a crappy replacement screen, messed up speakers, and screwed up audio jack would make me happy)

1. If you care about Dual-Core, you'd walk in and get a Droid 3 or X2. If you cared about 4G you'd walk in and get a Thunderbolt or a Droid Charge. If you cared about both, you'd go home and wait a few days and get a Droid Bionic.

2. Depends on whether you feel the need to keep up with everyone in terms of tech specs. I don't think with the Bionic (Dual core/LTE) you'd feel anything but happy 2 months from now.

2. you'd regret it in under 2 weeks, the Droid Bionic drops on the 8th.

I know, this shit never ends, but I can only deal with gadget blue balls for so long.

To be honest, I would have probably stayed with Apple if they had kept to a ~12 month refresh cycle, but the wait has made me want to explore my options. My 3GS has gone from the greatest phone I've ever had to a Peggle machine that can barely make calls. Not sure I can deal with this for 2-3 more months...

You'll be happy for the life of your contract if you get the bionic

Haha, somewhat true. But the Bionic is good enough to jump into.

So why does Android suck so much?
doing extremely well on my dx here.

i charge my phone every 2 days, and i'm going at 1.2 ghz.

4.3inch SLCD screen 960x540 isn't bad neither. thats almost qHD right there.

I want to believe, Bruce...

I still, though, need an impulse tech buy TODAY to clear my blues. Maybe I'll swing by a Best Buy and pick up a $100 TouchPad (dur hur hur)
