Welcome to the unfortunate section of galaxy s2 phones afflicted with this bug. If the battery life wasn't so shite I'd be almost 100% happy with this phone. My only other bone of contention is how easily the fucking screen gets scratched. I don't have it in a case or a screen protector and keep it in a pocket on it's own ie no coins, keys etc yet it gets scratched. I had the Nexus One for eighteen months and kept it in the same conditions (lost the slipcase after a couple of months) and didn't get a single scratch on the screen. Four scratches so far on the sgs2.

Fuck you Samsung!

I fixed it. It was either the twitter app trying to sync every second or the calander app being shitty and keeping the phone awake. Will narrow it down when i can be arsed. Gotten 2 days out of the battery with some texting, calls, internet, pictures and whatnot. 54% battery left.

So I finally jumped in and picked up a Samsung Infuse.

Cool phone. But there is a giant learning curve with Android that I might have underestimated after coming from iOS for so long.

People who are in the market for an Android phone?

Even then why wouldn't they just wait for the Nexus which will be the better android phone anyway?

And this is from someone who does not like iphones and whos brother has had every single one. I just think it the regular consumer would just wait for an iphone and android fans would just wait for the nexus.

I used to work at T-Mobile and I would get this complaint all the time, but i never really understood it. I've owned an iphone, 3g, and a 3gs before I switched to android and it wasn't difficult at all to get accustomed to android. A touchwiz phone should be even easier to be honest. What exactly are you having trouble with?

Quick cell phone question:

What do people thing of the LG Optimus S?

I've been reluctant to get a smart phone because I don't trust myself with having the internet at my fingertips at all times, but I think it's finally time to take the plunge. I'm going to sign up to Credo Mobile for sure (Sprint network) because I'm one of those people who hates supporting "evil" corporations and I'm still idealistic enough to think I can make a small difference.

Anyway, they have a limited selection of phones and, after browsing their site for a few minutes, I think this is the only smart phone that works with their service. I don't really care that much about apps, and care even less about games, but I would like a reliable phone that's at least good for web browsing. Will this suffice?

There's also an HTC Detail 4G, though it's $100 (as opposed to being free). Any thought of either of those phones would be welcome. I'm sure they're both fine for my needs, but first-hand experience is nice to have.
A day late, and maybe a dollar short, but my mom has been using the Optimus S for almost a year now. She got it for free on contract as well, and as far as she's concerned, it works great. I'm the only one that uses the web browser though, and that's whenever we go out around town, or when I'm just messing around with it at home. It doesn't have Flash (although I guess there's a limited version of it floating around; I couldn't get it to work *shrug*), but for general web browsing (the secondapps neogaf site is amazing!), it works fine. I wouldn't expect miracles with it, but checking up on GAF, a few other forums, and using the included android news app, it works well enough for me. It was also just updated to Gingerbread(!), so it feels a bit snappier than it used to.

Now, the only real problem I have with the phone is that the default launcher uses one of the three dock buttons for Sprint's ID suite, which lets you switch profiles that have different apps. and settings installed. This is a pain in the ass, and Sprint's bloatware is useless. There are two ways around this, however. You can either root the phone and install a custom rom, or use one of the many available launchers. Since it's really not my phone, I just threw Go Launcher EX on there and that works fine for my mom. This seems like it slows the phone down a bit upon wake up, but it's not a big enough issue for us. And since you'll be going through Credo, the phone might not even have it installed in the first place.

Anyways, I haven't used the HTC phone, but if you're looking for an extremely cheap, "beginner" Android phone, I'm not sure how much better you can do than the Optimus S. It's got its fair share of limitations, but if you don't care about Flash, and all you want to do is read some forums/read news, it works great. I advise you check out the Android Central forums I've been using for news/info on the phone when I need it. If you have any other questions on it, just send a pm and I'll try to answer it as best I can.

Do you really need a source? I see tons of people with N1 on this thread. I don't remember one guy with a NS. I remember quite a few with the Xoom on this thread too.

This is the text book definition of anecdotal evidence.

Yea nexus was exclusive to tmobile since you either paid full price for phone or if you had family plan you couldn't even get a nexus. So awesome.

Unless new customer.

It was better to buy from google and use on any gsm carrier than it was to buy through tmobile.

And that is how I got stuck with a mytouch 3G.

You could buy a Nexus One or a Nexus S full price and take it to Simple Mobile on day one.

That's called.....not being exclusive.

The first unconfirmed kal El results weren't that impressive

And Verizon now works in the Philly subways. Megaton. My last reason for keeping att is now gone

anyone else using the firefox nightlies for tablet?

Just updated to the latest today and the performance is fantastic! Finally webct (for uni) works properly, images are loading fine, facebook has no keyoard lag at all (and I found fb the worst for keyboard lag).

Not sure about the ui though, definitely good for tablets but I wish I could hide the tabs (like firefox for phones), I assume this feature is coming though...

Well I have the same phone and I can tell you there is flash and it works flawless :) I can recommend the phone. I use it with MIUI and it works like a charm and it is as fast as Galaxy II with a little Overclock :D

The Google Nexus Prime will have both GSM and Wi-Max radios inside: http://pocketnow.com/android/leakster-google-nexus-prime-global-launch-with-gsm-and-wimax

GNPGlobalTweet.jpg

This weekend we learned from a leakster that the Google Nexus Prime will most probably land on Verizon on November 3. That same leakster has tweeted further information implying that the phone will see a global launch with both GSM and WiMAX support.

With "GSM or wimax radios inside", the Google Nexus Prime, as it should be the case of a pure-Android phone, should work without a problem on carriers like AT&T or Sprint. Whether we'll see a November 3 launch for the global model or only the Verizon variant is yet unknown though Samsung (and Google) would highly benefit of such a launch.

My Samsung galaxy s2 has the worst battery life. 2 hours of heavy use and it's dead. Any tips? Wifi sharing always turns itself on no matter what. The not sure if this is the problem

Android has the ability to show battery usage under the settings

Download autokiller memory and juicedefender.. You can kill wifi sharing with Autokiller and juicedefender boosts your battery life.

Mine still just lasts a day though, disgusting. Gonna buy a 2000mah battery for 20 euro's soon. How much mah is the standard battery?

Is daily charging much of a surprise? Unless you are rocking a 2k mAh battery these days I would expect to need a charge daily at least.

It's a surprise to me sure, I don't expect the battery to be at 30% within 8 hrs of usage.. Not that intense usage anyhow.

Either way, I'll use juicedefender until I get a 2k battery.

My brother in law came over yesterday and wanted to extract his texts to the PC. How do you do that? I want something from the Windows end (W7 btw) preferably. Or is it only possible ia app on the phone (HTC EVO)?

SMS backup & Restore will backup his text messages into an XML file on his SD card.

While not made specifically for that purpose, I use SMS Backup+ to back up all of my text messages to my gmail account. It keeps it synced, and can restore the same text messages from your gmail account back onto your phone. So it will accomplish what you are trying to do, if you want to go that route.

Hmm, If I go Nexus I guess I'll definitely be going the WiMax version. 4G here I come!

there, finally some better clarification. The information leaking out has been a disaster, not helped by the sorry state of android blogs that completely suck

Yeah, now that its official I'm really curious to see the difference between what Verizon is offering and the vanilla Nexus. Its almost a sure bet whatever is put out on Verizon will get all the mindshare. I wonder how similar or dissimilar they're going to be.

i'd be willing to bet that it will be an OG Droid type of thing. Most assuredly will get the mind share, advertising, etc. It will be a fully sanctioned carrier phone vs the Nexus line

So it will be released with stock ICS only to be completely forgotten about come April?

In all seriousness what do you mean by that statement? It could mean like a million things. I don't see the difference between the Droid Prime/Nexus Prime being as big s the differences between the Droid and N1.

Or do you mean like whatever is on Verizon will be the "coming out party" for ICS. And then the Nexus release will happen a bit later with no fanfare? Could be true, I can see it. But that makes me think it won't be skinned.. which is something I hadn't really considered until right now.

If and when it hits Sprint, I wonder if they will leave the tethering in the OS intact and won't charge extra for it >_>

That's one thing I love about my Nexus One on T-mobile. I don't get charged for tethering, then again I don't abuse it (just browse the web and check my emails on the Tablet).

Don't quote me on this, but Sprint seems to be doing all they can be doing to gain customers. I bet that functionality will be there, its there on the NexusS, right?

it will be stock android maintained and supported by Samsung. Could get the "droid" moniker for more advertising dollars. It will be the first and exclusive carrier sanctioned ICS phone. The Nexus line will release everywhere else with the carriers deciding if they want to offer it to customers or go through google again.

The reason why it's going to be separate is because Verizon refuses to offer an unlocked dev phone on its network, so they will get the same phone without the nexus moniker. Notice the post said "GSM or WiMax radios" with no note of LTE, which, to me means its not going to be offered by/on Verizon. Verizon gets its carrier controlled phone

Oh yeah, I caught on to that part. I guess I was initially wondering about the hardware differences.

I still believe the Samsung Droid Prime and Nexus Prime are two different devices, the former being the CDMA equivalent, and will launch together. Like mentioned earlier, Nexus devices aren't carrier exclusive, especially for something as limited as CDMA.
