People who are in the market for an Android phone?

J Tourettes said:Welcome to the unfortunate section of galaxy s2 phones afflicted with this bug. If the battery life wasn't so shite I'd be almost 100% happy with this phone. My only other bone of contention is how easily the fucking screen gets scratched. I don't have it in a case or a screen protector and keep it in a pocket on it's own ie no coins, keys etc yet it gets scratched. I had the Nexus One for eighteen months and kept it in the same conditions (lost the slipcase after a couple of months) and didn't get a single scratch on the screen. Four scratches so far on the sgs2.
Fuck you Samsung!

Cool phone. But there is a giant learning curve with Android that I might have underestimated after coming from iOS for so long.
A day late, and maybe a dollar short, but my mom has been using the Optimus S for almost a year now. She got it for free on contract as well, and as far as she's concerned, it works great. I'm the only one that uses the web browser though, and that's whenever we go out around town, or when I'm just messing around with it at home. It doesn't have Flash (although I guess there's a limited version of it floating around; I couldn't get it to work *shrug*), but for general web browsing (the secondapps neogaf site is amazing!), it works fine. I wouldn't expect miracles with it, but checking up on GAF, a few other forums, and using the included android news app, it works well enough for me. It was also just updated to Gingerbread(!), so it feels a bit snappier than it used to.Gigglepoo said:Quick cell phone question:
What do people thing of the LG Optimus S?
I've been reluctant to get a smart phone because I don't trust myself with having the internet at my fingertips at all times, but I think it's finally time to take the plunge. I'm going to sign up to Credo Mobile for sure (Sprint network) because I'm one of those people who hates supporting "evil" corporations and I'm still idealistic enough to think I can make a small difference.
Anyway, they have a limited selection of phones and, after browsing their site for a few minutes, I think this is the only smart phone that works with their service. I don't really care that much about apps, and care even less about games, but I would like a reliable phone that's at least good for web browsing. Will this suffice?
There's also an HTC Detail 4G, though it's $100 (as opposed to being free). Any thought of either of those phones would be welcome. I'm sure they're both fine for my needs, but first-hand experience is nice to have.
Pkaz01 said:Even then why wouldn't they just wait for the Nexus which will be the better android phone anyway?
And this is from someone who does not like iphones and whos brother has had every single one. I just think it the regular consumer would just wait for an iphone and android fans would just wait for the nexus.

Sarcasm said:Yea nexus was exclusive to tmobile since you either paid full price for phone or if you had family plan you couldn't even get a nexus. So awesome.
Unless new customer.
It was better to buy from google and use on any gsm carrier than it was to buy through tmobile.
And that is how I got stuck with a mytouch 3G.

Now, the only real problem I have with the phone is that the default launcher uses one of the three dock buttons for Sprint's ID suite, which lets you switch profiles that have different apps. and settings installed. This is a pain in the ass, and Sprint's bloatware is useless. There are two ways around this, however. You can either root the phone and install a custom rom, or use one of the many available launchers. Since it's really not my phone, I just threw Go Launcher EX on there and that works fine for my mom. This seems like it slows the phone down a bit upon wake up, but it's not a big enough issue for us. And since you'll be going through Credo, the phone might not even have it installed in the first place.
Anyways, I haven't used the HTC phone, but if you're looking for an extremely cheap, "beginner" Android phone, I'm not sure how much better you can do than the Optimus S. It's got its fair share of limitations, but if you don't care about Flash, and all you want to do is read some forums/read news, it works great. I advise you check out the Android Central forums I've been using for news/info on the phone when I need it. If you have any other questions on it, just send a pm and I'll try to answer it as best I can.
This weekend we learned from a leakster that the Google Nexus Prime will most probably land on Verizon on November 3. That same leakster has tweeted further information implying that the phone will see a global launch with both GSM and WiMAX support.
With "GSM or wimax radios inside", the Google Nexus Prime, as it should be the case of a pure-Android phone, should work without a problem on carriers like AT&T or Sprint. Whether we'll see a November 3 launch for the global model or only the Verizon variant is yet unknown though Samsung (and Google) would highly benefit of such a launch.

In all seriousness what do you mean by that statement? It could mean like a million things. I don't see the difference between the Droid Prime/Nexus Prime being as big s the differences between the Droid and N1.
Or do you mean like whatever is on Verizon will be the "coming out party" for ICS. And then the Nexus release will happen a bit later with no fanfare? Could be true, I can see it. But that makes me think it won't be skinned.. which is something I hadn't really considered until right now.
Be it a Droid or Nexus branded new toy, with dual cores hd screens, fancy new widgets and more....
