I was just thinking it would be hilarious if the Samsung Unpacked event wasn't about the Nexus Prime and ICS at all.

Also, gimme some rumors to put in the thread.
I just created the Nexus Tablet Rumor.

browser benchmarks

i can't recall any CPU benchmarks off the top of my head, but yeah, that is the place where the losses for Apple would pile up.

oh, and...

Apple = Nathan Drake'd.

Now I am on the fence again... Iphone supposedly has 8 hours call time, which is amazing. But the call time is going to be only 3 hours on Galaxy S2. :\ I am so undecisive right now with them both.

I like flash games. Android gets a ton of them for free. But with better specs. I don't know anymore. :|

Yeah its a pretty pinpoint comparison. Those are all SOLELY GPU benchmarks. And its only GPU for a reason. They are the only benchmarks that shine that way, you start looking at CPU and the situation completely flips.

Based on everything I've said thus far, the Exynos 4210 should be among the highest performing SoCs on the market today. It has the same clock for clock performance as an Apple A5, NVIDIA Tegra 2 and TI OMAP 4430. Samsung surpassed those designs by delivering a 20% higher operating frequency, which should be tangible in typical use.

To find out let's turn to our CPU performance suite. We'll start with our browser benchmarks: SunSpider and BrowserMark:

I'll tell you a
not so
secret about the mobile industry. Call time and standby times statistics are almost always bollocks. Anyway why are you even considering an S2 when a Prime announcement is just around the corner?

Aw, so no early upgrade for me from Verizon so no new phone until Feb.

I have APEX on my Droid X but it has gotten really laggy and glitchy lately. Should I just wipe and reinstall the whole thing? I need to make this phone bad ass for the next 5 months.

I am on a family plan with AT&T... I am just afraid Nexus is going to be Verizon exclusive. :(

You won't know that until next week. By the 13th of October you will have your answer. There will be some form of GSM version, but potentially it could be for the Eurozone only.

perhaps you could highlight the iPad 2 in those images for me.

Aside from the GPU I was pretty unimpressed with the 4S, and in a few months time I'm sure even the 543MP2 will start to look average when compared to the latest chipsets. But at the moment Apple have the GPU performance crown (providing of course they haven't severely gimped the clock speeds to cram the A5 into the 4S.)

Either way, now I'll be eagerly awaiting to see what the Nexus Prime brings to the table, and what the other Q4 droids will be packing.

so is the Prime really rumored to have a 4.6" screen? So with Google's flagship device, they are only targeting males with LARGE hands?

IMO anything above 4" cannot be a mainstream success. My friend was like, "Well, I guess I'm getting an Android due the 4S not being a huge update." I told him about the Nexus next week and he said he's out if it's that big.

I guess that's Android though. He'll probably wind up getting whatever's good around 4" on Verizon.

What to expect?
  • Ice Cream Sandwich
  • The Nexus Prime
  • Software Update Roadmap
  • Chrome on Android

What else should I touch on for the event thread's OP?

in a few months, yes it will. eventually, everyone will catch up on GPU performance. yes, even you Qualcomm! this month? next month? december? in a phone? not so much.

i guess it's all over for the Galaxy S II, Evo series, Sensation, Droid, etc!

Galaxy S2's 10 millions sales in 5 months outside of the US says hello.

I'd put in the flagship phones of the big android manufacturers. Sammy's S2, HTC's Sensation, Motorola's Bionic and the Sony Ericsson LOL

where did you get the 3hour number from? i've got the s2 since june and i can assure you that the call time isnt 3 hours. accordings to specs ( http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Samsung-Galaxy-S-II_id5106 ) it's between 9-11hours which is a lot closer to the real world experience than the 3 hour figure.

the s2 is a great phone but has some minor annoyances (the european version at least, dunno about the u.s.). i would suggest waiting till the prime annoucement before making a decision.

ok I'll change it to "anything over 4.3" and my point stands.

but I guess I'm basing this all off of how my Droid X feels in my hands. Maybe Samsung could make the phone thinner/lighter than the X, so the extra 0.3" of screen wouldn't really seem like much.

Fuck, what if the Nexus Prime is actually the US version of the Note?

*splodes*

The Note is coming to the UK in November. In the highly unlikely event that the Prime disappoints I'm going to be highly tempted.

Futureman said:

Better make that 4.5" cos that's what the GalaxyS2 is. The Prime will only have a slightly bigger screen but doesn't need keys at the bottom taking up extra space ;-)

EDIT, My bad it is 4.3. But my point about the Prime's onscreen keys stands.

Tablets like the Xoom 2 and the Transformer 2. Plus Jelly Beans!

I don't think I will have the money to import an unlocked Nexus Prime... Its already expensive to buy phones for 200 or 150 dollars for a 2 year contract. I am not willing to spend 700 dollars on just a phone. Its quiet ridiculous.

Aside from that, I am waiting for the USA release of it. Unless Quad core cell phones are just around the corner Ie by December. Currently I am using my Father's phone with my sim chip in it. (we had the same feature phone).

I was checking AT&T's website out and it said 3 hours for talk time on it. I was like WTF and sad. :(

What are these annoyances? Please this will be my first smart phone... Also I heard AT&T got the UK/European version with their bloatware on it.

PS: My student that I teach how to do cell culture was stating the same thing about android phones being to large for him and he is afraid of them to break (the thinness of some) and other times he says they are too large to be comfortable. :( I was like they can fit my jeans and all. That's all I care for. But I am going to treat the phone care though. :)

pretty sure all SGSII phones are 4.3" but I may be wrong.

I'm probably just wrong overall though. I guess if my 4.3" X is fine, a company could easily make a sleeker phone with a larger screen and it wouldn't seem much bigger, if at all.

edit: yes I'm wrong wrong wrong. AT&T version is the only 4.3" SGSII in the USA.

Galaxy S2 on Sprint is 4.5"

Nevermind that realworld stats kind of fly in the face of this. There are more than just one phone coming out this fall. He doesnt have to get a 4.5 inch device if he doesnt want to. Theres plenty of models of phones.

the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S use the A5! 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 based Dual core CPU and SGX543MP2 (Dual core) beast GPU

the iPhone 4 uses an A4, which has a single core 850MHz CPU and single core SGX535 (2 gens behind) GPU. it's not anywhere close to being a stand-in.

if anything, the performance should be better in some benchmarks since the resolution is lower on the iPhone 4S than the iPad 2.

I'm saying the iPhone4 used the A4 from the iPad1, but it was not clocked the same. The 4S uses the A5, but will it be exactly the same as the iPad2's? How can you say for sure.

will you move the goalposts again after the 4.5" Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch on Sprint is a success? or T-Mobile's latest offering?

well, sure, if they clock it at 600MHz, it might be close!

keeping up.

According to these benchmarks:

iPad was faster than iPhone 4, so wouldn't it be safe to say that iPad 2 will be faster than iPhone 4S? Making the benchmarks you're posting relatively worthless? (Not to mention those are GPU benchmarks, which aren't going to have as much of a real-world effect.)

Copernicus said:

NOooooo NO no no no no..... That can't be possible since the OG Droid isn't downclocked.

relative to the scale of the gap? yes.

relative to the A5 in the iPhone 4S actually falling below competing products? i guess it's possible, in theory.

Yeah, ok thanks. Honestly we shouldn't be talking benchmarks at all until we actually have some that matter. So that's a 'my bad' from me too.

Wow. Came into this thread for some refuge from the stupidity in the IPhone discussion and... Well, same shit here.

Anyway, how's the hardware acceleration situation on Android at the moment? I liked android better as a phone OS, but the usability of web browsing on a touch screen was a disappointment due to the low framerate. How are things now?
depends on what fragment you're on or if your OEM does something special on their own...

Situation Missing, unless you're on Honeycomb. ICS will have hardware acceleration for all devices though.

Refuge from stupidity, in an Android thread, that's like running into a fire because you're thirsty.

I take a offense that we would shit out anything like the shit that is shit out in Apple threads.

I can't wait to sell my Nexus One and upgrade to the Prime, given it's a sizeable jump up in both specs and usability.

I've had it up to here with the N1's little problems, I've put up with them long enough.

Of course, I also hope they announce the Prime for Canadian release as well at this event. :(

They could still shit the bed on this, but I doubt it since its so based on Honeycomb. What Im interested in finding out is what else there will be. I really hope they dont just dog it, show some new stuff. HA is needed, but we need to see something else too, been seeing rumors lately that the large stuff is being postponed over into Jellybean.

i feel ya, i forgot how much longevity my xoom breathed into my N1... until i have to rely on my N1, and i want to put it through a wall
