Angry Joe´s Angry rant on ``Why the VGX 2013 Awards Suck``

Because there's no money in it. Publishers care the most about where and how their money is spent. Developers and lead directors aren't real celebrities they're hard working individuals. They're nowhere near the celebrity status not to the audience of Dudebro gamers. You'd need plenty of money to bring in celebrities that dudebro gamers would spend hours in front of tv. Sport Stars, movie stars, etc. And that's where the problem is. How do you turn dudebro fans who idolize tom cruise/morgan freeman/speilberg/etc into fans who'll end up realizing that Kamiya and the like should be there on stage instead of Vin Diesel. It's impossible. Now if ad money weren't an issue and show respect to the minority of gamers (those who know who miyamoto is who kamiya is who david cage is) then we'd get a show. But money talks.

Also making it a serious show would make it the last show on american soil. Only few gamers who actually care would watch it. No ad money+Money wasted=Not good.

Fair enough points. Although I would say, the gaming Industry makes a lot of money. How is it that the film/music industry are able to do this?

I dunno. If the money really isn't there, maybe they should just make it an official award thing that is only press releases. So basically they announce the winners on the award shows site. And leave it at that.

*shrugs*

the only things worth watching were the mega64 skit, no mans sky trailer/interview, telltale stuff. the rest were overhyped 20 second trailers

Well, not necessarily true. The ratings for VGA's were getting worse every year. I would be curious to see how this did (in terms of the viewers on the stream) - and the overall hits they are getting as a result of the discussion.

If it's even worse than past VGA's, then I could still see this going away.

Joel McHale brought not the chaos that show needed, but instead brought the chaos that show deserved.

If they really didn't know what they were getting from McHale, then I guess no one on Spike's staff watched him phone in the UbiSoft E3 presser a few years ago.

I know that. Which makes it extra confusing why people are begging Spike TV of all people to do it. No ones going to get that out of them.
Comparing them to the wrong aspects of popular award shows like the Oscars or Grammys. Both of which are filled with cringeworthy jokes and skits, out of place performances and glorious advertising.

Who cares about his wardrobe? Maybe he was cold? Maybe they had the AC going? Just because Joel didn't look like he was, Geoff could have been.

He actually comes up with a lot of ideas on how the awards could be improved and fixed

Yep, especially later on. He's actually been big about trying to give ideas for making the shows better.

Everyone agrees that the show was shit. It's important for people to bring about the topic in discussion. If you watch the first few minutes you won't realize that.

It's going to do just as mediocre if not worse because it was streaming online. However the silver linning in this is the fact that they have people at least talking about it. The same way people talked bout the Golden Globes when Ricky Gervais hosted it....Twice. I give it one more year and it will probably be it unfortunately.

Why is the X so sunken down in their logo? They probably thought it was edgy, but all I could think about was how I should probably start taking prescription antidepressants.

But was this really much worse than VGA's? I mean, in terms of people talking about it after the fact? I wasn't really posting on forums when those happened. Were people talking about it as much as the VGX?

industry makes money. it makes a lot of money. most of it goes to other projects. ceos. publishers. and people who care about making more money. pr/advertising is not free. These are big corporations who have a tonne of employes to handle.

Celebrities in North America are treated as gods. Musicians as well. Gaming is not seen as movies/albums. It's seen as a drug. As a problem. As THE problem why neglected children do the things they do. Gaming must become part of the media where Movies/TV/Music are in the spotlight. It won't happen any time soon.

It's only the monday after so Idk time will tell. I wouldn't be surprised if they tanked the show this year on purpose and said fuck it lets do whatever.

He's still salty, the beginning bit alone proves that. Joe came at him like an unprepared goofball just to insult him about his work. If you don't agree, that's fine but I'm not going to argue about it here.

Rofl, have you watched anything by Joe? He does this shit all the time. To be honest you get more views on youtube by being entertaining. All that shit he did at the beginning of the rant is nothing more than entertainment factor. Its just when all you do is do hyperbole without bringing insight is when you are not taken seriously.

There have been many times where I have watched videos with just raw data or criticism and I get bored.

But I enjoy a bit of hyperbole with my data just to emphasize sometimes just how stupid the thing being criticized is. Its a nice break in the data to unwind and process or reflect.

I really enjoyed the VGA's last year, I thought it was put together pretty well and had the potential to become even better this year. VGX however did not seem put together as well and seemed a bit rushed, also felt like a lot of conflicting ideas for what the show should be. It was clear that Joel was a last minute choice and nobody (even him) wanted his inclusion on the show.

I actually think the show was OK, but it was too all over the place in terms of what the vision of the show was really about. And I appreciated a lot of the stuff they showed and some reveals I was not expecting... I hope they don't stop the show though, because it is nice to have a place for developers to announce their projects outside of E3.

The amount of people coming into an Angry Joe thread just to shit on him is fucking astounding. Don't like Joe? How about staying the fuck out of threads specifically about him.

Pretty good video. I agreed with many of his points.

And I used to think AJ was the lamest dude on the internet, but he has really grown on me.

Do people not realize that Joe is pretty much an average gamer, who just happened start a youtube channel that took off?

He's not a professional interviewer. I give the man credit for jumping right in and pressing hard questions on Geoff from a few years back, and Major Nelson this year. He even admits in the previous video that Geoff caught him off guard. Of course he did, Geoff has been doing this for a long time, where as Joe hasn't.

I'm glad that Geoff has been knocked down a few pegs. Guy is passionate about gaming, and that's what I like about him. But he should know his limits. He's a great game journalist, but a shitty executive producer.

He already hits the nail on the spot by stating the Spike and Geoff could have expected Joel Mchale to act like this. He said they either did their research and wanted this to suck or they did not do their proper research.

I haven't had a chance to watch his video yet, but I can't agree with that statement more. I've known of Joel's work from The Soup for years now. Also they didn't announce who was going to host this show until right before the event, which makes me think they were possibly grabbing for straws.

Joel was kind of an ass, I can't deny that, but it seems like this whole event was ill-prepared. For example him trying to get some applause and you hear maybe one or two people clapping. I feel like they might have either not told him everything prior to this event or they were just that un-professional.

Geoff still comes off as an overly serious PR shrill. Like, I get that he really enjoys video games but he goes way too serious on this. At least Joel was trying to make some jokes and liven things up a little.

It's a smaller format this time around, but it didn't have to suck that hard. I enjoyed the game reveals and seeing new stuff. Maybe they could get someone other than Geoff on hosting duties.

Angry Joe was slating Joel on Twitter during the event. Back tracked somewhat in this vid I'd say

I definitely did.

Because upon rewatching it you can clearly tell he knows whats up. I asked myself why is this dude being so disinterested, so douchey (but funny), why is he giving everyone a hard time and being sarcastic about shit for 3 hours. Then it hits you. That's Joel Mchale's type of humor. It's always been.

However, even though I enjoyed him giving Geoff and others a ton of shit, flubbing his lines for comedic effect and asking a ton of inappropriate questions I didn't think it was right for this type of format and would have enjoyed a different type of humor. One that played more towards excitement about gaming, showing gaming's positive side in mainstream culture and having fun with gaming more so then making it all a big joke.

Basically what i've seen is that people really enjoy what Joel did if they pretty much already hated the VGA/VGX's because he treated it with such indifference like the whole thing was a joke. It just makes me wonder whether that was intentional by gametrailers themselves or whether they had no idea what he was about to unleash.

Sarcastic Humor is great for the internet, great for NeoGaf, great for Reddit I think, but personally too much sarcasm is off putting to me.

Angry Joe just has a hate-on for Geoff because he got schooled by him a few years ago.

But that doesn't mean I disagree with what he said.

I find it funny how the internet remembers things from 3 years ago. I don't know how many times ive addressed this. Half my posts on NeoGAF are individually telling threads the real story, instead of letting them believe the grapevine "joe-hate-train" crap.

But here goes.
I went to the VGA 2010 because I was invited (likely to be made an example of because I posted an angry rant about the previous show in 2009), I was promised a lengthy interview where I would field questions from my viewers and various internet threads that were complaining about them.

Oh and BTW, in the later follow up video I said as I was recounting the events of how I was treated, "I was supposed to be representing gamers there, I'm sorry I failed you guys" - this is where my haters and internet trolls perpetuated the myth that "Joe personally thinks he is gods gift to gaming" and that "he think he represents ALL gamers" and that "He has a huge uncontrollable ego" because I share my opinions on things in videos on the internet - that couldnt be further from the truth - I dont represent ALL gamers thats ridiculous, only a troll who wants desperately to hate me can come up with such a stupid ass out of context idea to try to peg on me having said.

Back then I had NO interview experience, just a dude given an opportunity, I was very nervous, but Geoff came to me before the show and smiled and said "you going to shit on the awards this year Joe" (clearly he had seen the video). I smiled back and said no, no, I mean not unless its terrible. Laughed and then he continued greeting famous people.

I was placed at the dead last in a long line of "gaming journalists", a press line I would later learn they called it. The press would get maybe one or two questions for all the celeb's and they'd move on. When I realized what was up, I tried flagging down Geoff, at this point he seemed to be purposefully ignoring me not making eye contact when hes just a few feet away. I got a few impromptu interviews with various peoples like Felicia Day who was cool enough to go to the very last person in line before leaving unlike nearly everyone else, then it was over.

I could see Geoff standing a few feet away, again tried to get his attention, then he left. So I was like fuck, this sucks, told Tons0Fun to pack up the camera and lets go, hes not coming. Suddenly without warning as we are packing up Geoff surprises us from behind, says in a rushed manner, come on Joe you got 2 minutes, come on, lets go. The rest is history, you can see in the video.

From later conversations with Geoff himself, I told him I was upset that I didnt get what I was promised, at how he ambushed me and put me on the spot, he shared with me how he was upset at the editing job I did on the follow up video (me pausing him and walking in screen to shake my head) and that my VGA 2009 video was quote "like shitting on his wedding". We talked more about it, I told him I just wanted someone to answer for the previous B.S. and make sure its not in future shows, that was my only purpose there since none of the other "REAL Journalists" who were busy stuffing there faces with the free food and alcohol cared to bring it up, while the internet was ablaze with it.

We basically both wanted the same thing to improve the show, to make it better, he saw that, he saw past my name "Angry" Joe (like so many get hung up on) and he saw I was a genuinely passionate dude. He gave my his personal email, we exchanged cell phone information and he asked to keep in touch with future feedback, we took a picture and that was that pretty much.

Oh wow, huge controversy! Screw you Joe for doing all that! You are terrible. Yea I know! lol. But regardless of the real story being here on NeoGaf for a half a second people will still say stupid shit about it, still think that I personally believe im gods gift to gaming and that I represent all the jocks and assholes and douchbags that beat up kids in highschool (someone actually said this, even though I was in chess club getting my ass kicked).

The 2010 show was better than the 2009, and the show as been getting better every year. This to me was the biggest leap forward the 2013 show, free from over commercialization free from television contracts and overlords and corporate bullshit. Now is the real opportunity to make this the show we all like and can be excited about.

I'm just trying to help, collecting the feedback of everyone, including my own and letting Geoff who is a producer how it can better improve - if that pisses you off and deserves your hate and trollin' thats cool. Continue.

Eh, I knew you guys had already buried the hatchet, but a big deal wasn't made about it so it didn't make headlines and people didn't recognize it.

You should copy and paste that...cause it's just going to happen again.

It's 'Cuz I have the word "Angry" in my name.
You see it time and time again, get labeled with the "gimmick" title from people who havent watched but the most angry video of my 450+ videos by now.
If you knew me or my show you'd know I rarely get Angry and Im more passionate and about bringing awareness to cool and good games. but nope. This dude has "ANGRY" in his name. total gimmick cash in. Because that takes the least brain power to assume.

Occasionally I do Pissed off rants when my games crash over and over or release in total fucking garbage mode like Battlefield 4 and Rome II.

Yea a total gimmick right? Not real emotion, not being fed up at all. Not a real gamer in the least. In fact ive never even played a game at all. ever. whats a controller/mouse?

*rolls eyes*

I'm glad people turn off or dismiss the show at the very first reading of "Angry" in "Angry Joe". Thats why my youtube comments arent usually a sesspool of hate, because they actually watch the content and understand whats up.

At least until someone brings up the word feminist, then a large majority pretty much turn into frickin' disgusting assholes.

Whats sad is that, because of the VGX being so shitty, that is what is making rounds today, instead of applauding everything about game design, and having their moment to shine.

Its going to take people like Geoff, GiantBomb, Rev3, and to an extent AngryJoe, Boogie2988 (who both at least called out the BS), and those that have a voice that can be heard more than most to hopefully continue to turn this show into something that's at least respectable.

I like what Joe said about the best xbox/ps3 game awards. They should only be exclusives because it doesn't make sense to have multiplatform games there. Watching the VGX it felt like a big advertisement instead of a celebration of games other than the 30-45 minutes of good interviews and cool reveals like the indie space game.

Crosspost:

In my opinion, people really shouldn't care how much shit this show is. It's a Spike TV production. It will always be garbage. It will never be the Oscars of video games. It will never be respectful to gamers or the medium. It will never be anything but an excuse to cram shitty promo trailers down our throats. It will never be classy. It will always pander to the lowest common denominator. It will always be a mess. It will always be a disappointment. It will always be a Spike TV production.

It cannot be "saved."
It cannot be "fixed.

Instead of caring about how this fucking garbage can be salvaged maybe you people should tune in for the next BAFTA Games awards show. I see people like Boogie and Angry Joe talking about what the VGAs should be. IT WILL ALWAYS BE SHIT. There are alternatives, alternatives that do exactly what you wish this shit was. Do yourselves a favor and stop wasting brain cells trying to figure out how this crap can be fixed. It's putrid trash. Just enjoy swimming in the filth.

Great video from Boogie and Joe and Sterling was also a rampage on twitter. To me they are honest and reflect on what i like to hear instead the things like IGN or what not other media outlet.

Passionate Joe. I like that :D

Passionate Joe Show

But then I can imagine the skit now. Long-Hair and shirt off recalling the image of Fabio and reciting the latest trashy romance novel line....

I think Angry Joe might be ok to stick with.

Edit: Yes, that's the real Joe.

If you haven't watched his ride to hell review, you should. Really hilarous, and glad I didn't have to pay to play that hot mess. :P

You can be passionate without having an obnoxious gimmick.
What gimmick?
And don't worry Joe, a lot of people can't even read two sentence OPs, so of course they haven't even watched the content of your videos. They just see the word angry and take it from there. Ignore these people.
Cause if they had watched, they'd understand what you're about. Keep it up, cause you rule.
