Hey GAF!

Hypothetically speaking, if you had a roommate who was abusing an animal, and you were afraid of calling the local services because you were afraid of your roommate stealing your shit and murdering you in your sleep what would you do? Apparently my state makes it so I have to wait thirty days to get this motherfucker out, but this dude is a weird motherfucker with a felony charge that I should've have let move in the first place (i'm obviously regretting this decision, don't be nice to me, just understand that I am already cognizant of the fact I made a TERRIBLE decision using craigslist to get a roommate.)

So yeah. I want to call animal control, but I'm deathly afraid/have anxiety attacks about getting murdered in my sleep during the 30 days it takes in Tennessee to evict someone.
 
I...wow. is there an outside witness who can corroborate or file a report anonymously? Not that you want someone else in the line of fire if he's that psychotic, but if other people know of his behavior it might be easier to come up with a game plan.
I was involved in a case of friends-roommate-animal-abuse and I totally would've pulled the trigger so to speak if he'd let me. Rotten nightmare story.

Better yet, get the animal to safety if at all possible. Even if you have to lie about its whereabouts (oops, left the screen open, etc). Then get the roommate out.
 
I'd murder him in front of the animal he abuses. I don't play that animal abuse shit, if you allow it to happen and don't do anything it speaks volumes about yourself.

How long have you known this roommate? Abusing animals is bullshit, but there's no need to do anything abruptly if you're worried about your own safety.

Edit: Missed the last Craigslist portion. If it were me I would talk to the property owners before I ever went to animal control. If you happen to call animal control and they take his pet; I would firmly want to be out of reach. If it's reasonable to discuss, what was their felony?

Anyone know why internet hard men will always sentence someone to be beaten to death even for the most trivial of crimes?
 
Shit I'm sorry to hear that Tear. :( Maybe when he's not around take the animal and call animal support and ask what to do? There has to be some kind of protection they can give.

Take the animal and stash it someplace safe, then tell your roommate it ran away. Leave a door propped open all day or something to make it believable, if you want.
Then tell him he has to move out in an unrelated way. Maybe you have a friend who really needs a cheap place to stay or something. Or just say the living arrangement isn't working out.
You can definitely get rid of him with out fully confronting the situation and putting yourself or property in any danger.

So what is the guy doing to the animal exactly?

He could just be farting in the dogs face and laughing at its reaction.
 
Have you try talking to the guy? Just tell him you love animal and that is bugging you. May be offer money to buy the pet off him?

All else fail, suffer for another month, and get a new roommate. Assuming you are correct that the guy is a crazy psychopath, it is not worth risking yourself for an animal.
 
Kinda off topic. What type of animal maltreatment is considered animal cruelty? Is having a dairy farm animal cruelty? How about killing pests? At what size does it have to be for it to be considered animal cruelty? Does the animal have to show relatable emotion? I admit I'm ignorant here. I just consider pets and large animals being harmed as animal cruelty but I don't feel this applies to food otherwise I will starve. :|
 
Save the animal at all costs. Tell your roommate that if they do it again you will get the police involved. Dont let that shit go any further in any way. If an issue arises, tell them to leave or again, get authorities involved. That shit is not fucking okay at all.

Please save whatever animal your roommate is harming. It cant defend itself in those situations and you are the only person who can stop it.
 
If I was genuinely afraid of lethal retaliation I'd wait until they moved out, but try to document the abuse as much as possible so that they could be prosecuted later. Even if you manage to get the animal to safety, the abuser is just going to get another one and keep doing whatever they're doing.

If I wasn't really afraid I'd confront them and tell them that what they're doing is not okay. Just out of curiosity, what kinda hypothetical abuse are we talking about, OP?
 
He would punch the dog in the neck and throw it around by the neck to 'punish' it or to teach it how to stop misbehaving. I'm not sure which, and I'm not sure if that's a legit method or not. I know with certain bigger dogs, a little bit of blunt force is acceptable. I'm not an animal trainer, I just know that hearing the dog moaning at 7am is fucking unbearable, and he leaves it locked up all day and night even when he's home.

He lets it out for food and water, but barely gives it much water or food because he'll pee and poop in the cage while he's gone and make everything super smelly. So he's trying to "cut down" on the amount of food given.

I honestly don't know how I could prove that he hurts the dog. I know he's neglecting it, but I don't know how to prove THAT either.

Whatever. We're getting evicted in 10 days anyway. I really just want to give his dog to a dog-fan friend of mine and then move away. He keeps gaslighting me for him being way behind on rent and fuck that shit. Nope.

why does he even keep the dog? does he have to for some reason? it doesnt sound like he is keeping the dog for the pleasure of hurting it. the way you put it, it sounds he is just a complete idiot who is completely overburdened with a dog. maybe he would even welcome it if you already know someone who would take the dog?

Let's not go there. Every time I tell GAF what's actually wrong with me I end up regretting being honest. Well except in the mental health thread, because there if you say "I'm afraid of ending up in hurting someone" or "trigger" they actually believe you and don't use all caps to shame you for being inexperienced in animal abuse and having various serious mental health issues.

Sounds like cruelty to me.

Honestly, I would rescue the dog and give it to somebody who will care for it. Calling animal welfare or whatever would prob be a waste of time in this case. Do what you think is right. I know it's tough but the animal is suffering.

Do your best to save that animal. Try and see if you can live with some friends while you report that asshole and take your stuff.
