Seems like a good idea. Some guys were following me for a bit while I was looking for someone alone at AX it was pretty creepy.

I'll skip the rest of the topic since I'm sure it's going to be stupid.

This is great. At these type of events they should check. Sexual offenders are the fucking worst. Its hard for anyone to stop doing something that sexually excites them. So events that have large amount of minors should check people's backgrounds.

You don't have to be an actual sexual offender to end up on a registry. People get put on it for pissing on a dumpster next to a bar because the cops charge them with lewd exposure.

This is not only a waste of time, but is going to end up in so many false positives from similiar names. The registry wouldn't have protected the girl in the OP story, either.

It's kind of scary how some people assume the sex offender registry is this infallible database of magical protection.

It's an unconstitutional construct that needs to be removed. It's double punishment for the same crime and it's becoming easier week by week to end up on it as politicians add more and more crimes that qualify you for it. It does nothing to solve human trafficking. It is completely fucking useless and just an Action Replay code for politicians to use to get re-elected. Especially when we're throwing people on them because DAs take the easy way out and offer someone to plea out "and take their medicine" and only take being on the registry versus jail time and they'll take the plea bargain on even the flimsiest of cases.

All this leads to is a false sense of security at the event and assumes no man or woman attending this convention is about to become a first time offender. Minors should not go to any convention without a parent or guardian anyway. Requiring minors to have a parent or guardian present would go a lot longer towards safety than hoping the magic database will protect kids from walking out the door with someone they shouldn't be. But then again, these are the same people that think requring school IDs prevent another Columbine from happening.

And being weird justifies being stigmatized as a sex offender? This topic is full of people who attempt to draw some kind of line between anime-fans and criminals, which is beyond being only unfunny. I´m not into moe-anime, unless Mawaru Penguin Drum and Usagi Drop count as such, but let people enjoy what they want to enjoy. Quitting being interested in anime because you reach a certain age that society expects you to quit it? Ridiculous.

That´s not even touching on the subject of why young girls are cosplaying as characters that are MEANT to be sexy, attractive, inviting. Complete and utter failure on side of the parents if they let their underage children reveal their bodies in clothing that is clearly meant to be sexualized.

I didn't say it was weird, weird is cool. I said it's beyond weird. As in some of that shit is just plain sick.

If you're a grown ass man who's into watching animated girls drawn to look like partially developed 12 year olds in mini-skirts and see thru tops with the constant crotch/upskirt shots, buying the dolls obsessing over their body parts and shit reviewing them like this. Then yea, you'd better fucking believe I'd be wary of this type of person unsupervised around hundreds of young girls, especially if you're already a proven sex offender.

EDIT: The pissing on the dumpster stuff does suck though. Kind of makes the registry pointless if people are getting written up for things like that.

I was mostly commenting on the industry's creepy pandering which I disapprove of.

doomed1, I think you're downplaying just how big of a fandom "lolicon" is. It doesn't matter if it's not as big as some other. The fact that the industry actively supports it is what I find fucking disgusting.

sex offender have the second lowest [after murder] recidivism rates in north america though. they're one of the least likely people to recommit a sex crime.

It's pretty bad. You look at the anime releases for each season and more often than not it's some variation on moe loli harem themes, and not really anything else around to offset it now. Being an "out" anime fan under current circumstances goes beyond being flagged as nerdy.

perfectnight, you have 2 hours to provide solid factual evidence that a "prominent portion" of anime/manga fandom is made up of pedophiles. If in 2 hours there is no detailed study with facts and figures backing up your claim (find out how big the total fanbase is, define specifically what "prominent portion" means in terms of a percentage range, and provide the figures of how many proven pedophiles are part of this fanbase), then you shall be banned.

Start working on it now.

This is part of why I don't really watch anime anymore.

It's gonna be weird drawing stuff in pseudo-anime/manga style (mainly for games) and not being an anime watcher anymore.

Also, this thread has kept me entertained, but Duckroll got me hyped.

I'm all for this. I cover a lot of anime conventions, and I have seen and experienced first hand some creepy, disturbing fucking shit. Here's two quick stories off the top of my head.

Ohayocon 2009: A girl maybe 16 years old comes knocking at my friend and I's hotel room door. I open it up to find her with a Snapple bottle filled to the brim with straight up Jack Daniel's. She asks if she can come in to "party." My friends and I are all 20+. I closed the door in her face.

Matsuricon 2010: A meet up with a group of people who my friend knows with the intent of staying in their nice ass hotel suite for the duration of the con. I never met these people before, and even my friend admitted he didn't know them that well, but the offer was too good to pass up. Upon arriving the owner of the room pulls out a giant bag of Ecstasy and says, "tonight is going to be a good night." I'm thinking, "Ecstasy at an anime convention with underage people isn't a good idea..." and instantly consider leaving, but my friend insists everything is cool. Later that night a couple of the people from the room come to my friend and I and ask us to recruit girls for a hotel party. I'm looking around, and all I see are young teens, some of which are with their moms, and I'm like, "Dudes, wat?" Then one of the guys comes up to me, gets really close and starts talking low about how he likes them young. Even my friend realized it was time to leave at that point. We drove out of there as fast and as far away as possible.

There are plenty of other stories too, like how a guy tried to rape a young girl on the steps at one con I attended, or how one of my "friends" thought it'd be a good idea to go around the con and sneak upskirt panty shots of girls, while later trying to bang my friend's 13-year old sister.

I'm not saying anime fans and nerds are generally creepy (I'm not a creep, I think...), but it's definitely an environment that seems to attract that kind of shit from all of my experiences. Not to mention the girls often don't help the matter any by being genuinely slutty, beyond that of simply attention whoring (see: my first story).

Yes, I think that in general, any subculture/niche fandom with convention or sizable gatherings involving industries which have a lot of younger female fans (young teens in particular) are very much in danger of this sort of behavior. Although the actual deviants and potential criminals are in the minority, you really just need one sick guy and some bad shit can happen.

I'm kinda surprised that stuff like this doesn't happen more often. Organizers should definitely be in contact with authorities in regards to ensuring that known offenders stay the fuck away. Schools do it, there's no reason why all the big conventions can't especially when they're all registration events, and happen only once a year.

Would you say that these conventions should develop a system like they do at the clubs to establish who is over 18 and who is not?

Looked up Panda's thread on 4chan before it was deleted. Whole lot of people responding yes, or no but with the qualification that being a lolicon doesn't make you a pedo.

And also my first time encountering this "3DPD" designation. 3D Pedo? Guess they're accustomed to having to make that distinction. Ugh.

The conventions are registration only events. You have to pay for access into the venue, and you wear your badge throughout your stay within the venue. It is already more restrictive in that sense than going into a club. There is no reason at all not to have added verification on whether the people coming in are sex offenders or not. It's not going to keep them all away, since obviously you have creeps who have never been arrested, but it's a good start.

I do not believe that conventions should be 18+ only events though. There is no reason for it as long as there is responsible parenting + basic security measures in place. The events are not adult focused, and the official content at the events are meant for all ages (concerts, movie/series premiere screenings, industry panels, creator Q&As, signings, etc).

Huh, did you not read my follow up post? I admit that pedophile wasn't the best word to use because I didn't mean to imply people who are into moe/lolicon are also attracted to real kids.

And I also explained why I think there IS indeed a sizable portion of those people in the fandom. Sizable enough to make anime studios and mangaka continuously release material that pander to people who are into drawn little girls. Shows like K-On, Strike Witches, Nanoha, etc. are quite popular. But if you want to be cute and ignore the obvious cause' you want to ban someone you don't agree with then that's fine.

BTW, the SNSD/Kpop thread was quite informative and I found some bands that I actually like. Sorry you don't like humor in threads!
