I understand your resentment, but Eva is beautifully animated, and its mythos is compelling. People are retards about it. It's still amazing.

[edit] On the other hand, Death Note is tragically average for the love it gets.

I say yes.

If you haven't watched it recently, I suggest revisiting it so you can correct that part. You can't even go "for its time, it was done well", I don't think.

I'm with you on Deathnote though. That's the new Eva in terms of undeserving fan worship. If I see another barefoot dickface in my store trying to be L, I will pray for an electric fire or something.

One Piece might be one of the best stories told, period. But people fear the time investment required in catching up. Their loss imo.

One Piece? Looks like the KIDDIEST story ever told, lol.

No, One Piece is quite good. What I like is the huge amount of ideas fabricated into it. The storytelling itself lacks a little, though. About the maturity... it has quite a good balance. Maybe a little too quirky.

I do agree that the number of omgwtfawesome anime has declined signifigantly in the past 2 or 3 years to the lowest level i've seen since I started watching anime in '98 but I don't have as much time to watch it anymore either so maybe there's a connection there

Fun fact, when Akira and Perfect Blue were out and popular in Japan, thats when Dragon Ball was at its most popular in Japan as well!

Not only that, but youre comparing mostly movies to series. In my opinion Full Metal Alchemist is fantastic, same thing with Eureka 7 (better than Evangelion I think), Monster, Bleach, etc.. and on the movie side Paprika and Tekkon Kinkreet are also masterpieces.

Dunno dude, just do the effort and find better stuff.

There was good anime 20 years ago, there was good anime 10 years ago, and there's good anime TODAY. If you don't see it, it's because you either aren't looking hard enough or you aren't looking in the right place.

Series:
Noein - Time-travel scifi with alternate timelines
Mushishi - Laid back travelogue about a man who deals with supernatural bugs
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - One of the best scifi anime series ever
Last Exile - Steampunk arial warfare
Kamichu! - Ghibli-style fantasy series
Slayers Revolution - It's a new Slayers series
Planetes - Geopolitical thrills and outerspace garbage collectors
Tweeny Witches - Name aside it's an interesting twist on the fantasy genre
Scrapped Princess - Really good medieval fantasy series with scifi undertones
Moonlight Mile - Two adventurous friends try to become astronauts
RahXephon - Simpler than EVA but has great animation
Denno Coil - Cyberpunk scifi with kids
Kino's Journey - Surreal fables
Moyashimon - Weird series about a college kid who can "see" microorganisms
Windy Tales - Laid back real-world fantasy about people who can control the wind
Cromartie High School - Funniest anime series ever
Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu - Very funny spinoff of the more-serious FMP
Arjuna - Magical girl eco-thriller
Ergo Proxy - post apocalyptic scifi series
Paranoia Agent - Weird horror-thriller about a possibly-imaginary boy who beats people with a baseball bat
Kurau: Phantom Memory - Character-driven scifi series with a heavy focus on drama

Movies:
Any of Satoshi Kon's movies
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence - Sequel to the original
Tekkonkinkreet - Weird story about two kids who fight to protect their slum from becoming a theme park
Voices of a Distant Star, 5cm Per Second, and The Place Promised in Our Early Years by Makoto Shinkai

Hey, I basically started on anime with titles like Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Akira, Macross Plus, Berserk etc., you name it!

But you know what? I also discovered there are good anime (my personal taste) in every decade. 60`(Attack No.1), 70`(Aim for The Ace), 80` (Legend of galactic heroes), 90`(Escaflowne, Gasaraki) and in 00`(Ghost in the Shell SAC, 2nd Gig), just to name a few. The list would have gotten in the 100+. And I have barely scratched the surface.

I really can't comprehend where a view like this comes from. Or are you just saying that because you know it will annoy people?

Yeah, the movies are great, but I just don't "get" the TV shows. Then again, I don't watch any Western serials either.

There's really not a lot of similarities between most anime series and Western series. Western series usually pick an idea and then run with it until the show declines in popularity. Most anime series, and there are plenty of exceptions around, get a single season [or less] and tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end that was planned out from the start.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time only came out last year and is better than all the Anime you listed in the first post

And there's a new Dragonball?

Dragon Ball is something new?

Uhhh ya, Dragonball is almost just as old as half the stuff you mentioned.

Evangelion is subpar at best. I'd suggest you give Cowboy Bebop another chance, it really is pretty good.

I'm far from a pro here but these are a few others I enjoyed

Full Metal Alchemist
Samurai Champloo
Seven Samurai
Bleach

Alot of anime that is licesned and brought over here to be dubbed is completely ruined.

Naruto Manga > Naruto Fan Subbed Show > Piece of shit Dubbed American Version on Cartoon Network. I hear it's the same case for One Piece. If you're making your judgments based solely on the American versions then you're missing out entirely. Check out some of the source material.

This was EXACTLY the post I was hoping for.

I will add these to Netflix asap!

Evangelion is overrated garbage. People want to read so much into the story, and listening to people debate its meaning makes me want to hang them, then myself.

Anyway, if you like Perfect Blue, have you not seen any of Satoshi Kon's other stuff?
Eva was a textbook in how to make giant robots fighting monsters boring as hell. Thankfully TTGL has shown us the true path

They're fixing One Piece. Funimation has taken over from 4kids. I'm finally buying the series as it's re-released on DVD.

Everyone that hates Eva - quick!

Post what you do like in anime and any other medium so I know to run the fuck away from it (because you have shitty no taste).

Cowboy Bebop is surely awesome.
Love it from first episode to final episode.
Spike Spiegel FTW!

I watched the melancholy of Suzumiya haruhi this past week and I really really like it. Reading the novels right now.
Spoiler about the 2nd unaired season (dont read if you havent read the Dissapearence of Haruhi novel):
Wow, it really is like the epidsode of Futurama where Fry "dies" beacuse of the giant bees. I thought it was a tribute to Futurama, or maybe Futurama copied it from another thing?

Sorry, I just hate it when people use a term that covers so much ground. That guy is basically saying that any piece of animation done in Japan is garbage and that's some tremendous bullshit right there.

If the usual Japanese show isn't your thing, try watching Mushishi, its a much much diofferent show than anything Ive seen, and the visuals have a movie quality to them.

Berserk!

Congratulations. You get to go back to "mostly shitty" as opposed to "no."

I was kidding. I never watched Berserk, and I only thumbed through like half of the first manga volume.

Berserk is in my list of stuff to check out once I'm gone from my job, along with about 50 other titles. But I was serious about Eva, though. Don't like it much.

Genshiken, Sword of the Stranger, Paranoia Agent, Paradise Kiss, Nana, Le Chevalier D'Eon, FLCL, Kemonozume, Ookiku Furikabutte, Elfin Lied, Beck, Samurai Champloo, The Count of Monte Cristo, etc.... Just to name a few.

Samurai Champloo!

How did I forget about that?

Added!

Worst. Series. Ever.

All I've ever heard from customers is "that shit is crazy with the blood and killing and shit, yo" and I have been asked ~789zillion x if they're gonna make a season 2. And that's a low estimate.

My only real experience with the series was that old DC game, and I didn't like it too much.

The DC game was T-R-A-S-H.

My buddy was obsessed with watching the series though, he made me watch the American Dub with the awful outtakes...

Still haunts me to this day. So bad.

:lol :lol :lol WHAT?! That's like saying Code Geass is watchable. No. Just no.

Code Geass is watchable, it is certainly better then some other mecha shows I could name.

anime is just as terrible as television from any country it's just that after you watch enough you realize this and once the secret is left to air out in the open you can't NOT smell it.

There's pretty much a sell by date for anime fandom, you'll likely be into it from the age of 13 until around 20 maybe. It helps if you actually get a japanese friend or go to japan on holiday, it's as though it burns it all out of your system and you realize you're done with the culture.
