Anyone know what anime has shitloads of blood and violence??

Plenty. Standouts that come to mind include Black Lagoon, Wicked City, Ninja Scroll (the OVA, not the TV series), any of the Fist of the North Star movies, and Akira. Shows I don't personally care for but that are certainly violent as all hell include Elfen Lied, Gantz, and Speed Grapher.

Actually, you're going to tear your hair out searching for Maison Ikkoku box sets 5 and 8.

I recently sold a copy of #8 for 150 bucks...

I do strongly recommend the series, though. It's one of the most...fulfilling anime out there.

Doh! Well, it's still cheaper than buying the entire series on VHS (or, god forbid, importing the LDs) would have been. Cold comfort, but, hey, you take what you can get.

FnordChan, glad he bought the entire series as it was being released

The original Macross is incredible, best space opera I've ever seen. Macross 7 is a mixed bag: it's a lot more ridiculous and slapstick than the original.

BUt daymn, Gantz has to be the most perverted anime I've ever seen. But yet so violent.

Bartender - Genius bartender, Ryu Sasakura makes the most incredible cocktails anyone has ever tasted. Seeking his "Glass of God", individuals from all different walks of life visit his bar. With both a compassionate ear and a godly drink, Ryu helps people with their problems.

Ergo Proxy - In a future where the world has been ravaged by a nuclear apocalyse, there exists salvation in a domed city named "Romdeau", where humans and their android servants, the autoreivs, live in. Under the implementation of complete management control, it is a paradise where feelings are literally discarded, and the governing council dictates the way of life the citizens should live. But this utopian landscape is soon broken by a series of mystifying murders. Real Mayar, a female inspector from the Citizen Information Bureau, along with her autoreiv partner Iggy, are tasked to solve the murder cases. She is soon attacked by a creature drawn to her which is neither human nor android, and learns about the mysterious phenomena called "Awakening", an event which draws her further into the case...and to the world beyond the limits of Romdeau.

Descriptions stolen from ANN because I'm lazy but both titles are highly rated by me.

Bartender is just a classy act in all respects especially our main character. Ergo Proxy is a intriguing romp whether or not you scratch at the philosophic parts of it.

Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise

It's definitely a mature story, much more mature than most of the fan service-filled anime you normally see. It isn't all that action packed compared to most anime though, so just know that going in (It's also made by the same people that later would do Evangelion and Gurren Lagann). Also, Jin-Roh.

*reads whole thread*

WOW, am I really the first to mention this?

GAF, you disappoint me.

Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix - Based off the godfather of manga unfinished work this series explores human nature and the circle of life and death. The dialogue is a little corny but the message is still the same.

Patlabor movies 1 and 2 - both movies are taut thrillers with the first being a bit more lighthearted than the second movie.

Grave of the Fireflies - This movie will make you cry. Probaly has been played out in the minds of most people.

They were Eleven - A story about a group of ten students sent to a spaceship as part of their final exam. Except when they get on the ship there are eleven students. Who is the 11th student who doesn't belong. Why do strange things keep happening on the ship? Why do good things happen to bad people? Trailer

Jin-Roh - Little Red Riding Hood from Mamoru Oshii. Trailer

Fantastic Children - It kinda jumps the shark by the third disc but the series is still pretty good.

Attempt #2

Alien Nine- It's an OVA and doesn't actually cover all of the manga. It stars 3 little girls but if you're looking deeper than what is on the surface you can find plenty of mature themes.

Basilisk - The year is 1614 AD. Two warring ninja clans, each supporting a son of Hidetada Tokugawa as the next shogun, send ten representatives each to fight to the death for the possession of a scroll. The prize: the annihilation of the other and the staunch support of the Tokugawa government for the winning clan for the next thousand years

:( Makes me want to download the rest of the anime. Such an awesome show. *considers buying series or Gurren Lagann 2nd DVD* Grrr... just a little longer.

I just remembered what I wanted to say
Metropolis -- dsytopian, anti-communist, anti-capitalist, pro-robot anime film ^^

I can't believe Dali was the only one to mention it

This cannot be stated enough times. Go watch Kino's Journey right now!!
Restressing.

Restressing.

Restressing.

Also, Dennou Coil is the best anime ever.

Metropolis (movie)
Paranoia Agent
Perfect Blue (movie)
Paprika (movie)
Tokyo Godfathers (movie)

Conflicted on whether to say Evangelion or not considering I haven't watched it but it sounds pretty mature and intelligent (and depressing).

Worth noting that I actually cried the first time I watched Metropolis.

yeah Gantz gets really good ...i dont think theres a second season though, apparently the anime caught up to the manga at the time and they had to axe the show...no more story yet...the end is tough to swallow but still a damn good show.

You'd think so, but you'd be wrong. Admittedly, lots of folks disagree with my opinion (namely that Eva goes straight off the rails about halfway through) but there's enough debate over the title that I wouldn't say much about it either way until I'd seen the show for myself.

I second Honneamise, They Were 11, and the Patlabor flicks.

They must've known where to stop. You have to pay attention to the beginning to understand the ending. The anime has a bit of a different atmosphere from the manga. The anime was as complete as any other anime. CLUE:
Watch the first episode again once you have seen the ending. Keep an eye on the train scene. Look at the people waiting on the platform.
;) You see, it's subtle things like this that make the anime so great. :D

I just watched this show, Spice & Wolf.

spice.jpg

It's a really rewarding, well written show. It's about a traveling merchant (Lawrence) who picks up a wolf girl (Horo) and is taking her back to her home country in Renaissance Europe. The story's broken down into two parts (1-6 covers the first book, 8-13 the second) and the story moves somewhat slow but that's not the main appeal of this show, it's the character interaction. The main characters Lawrence and Horo develop a relationship on the road that unfolds pretty fluidly, much more so than in any anime I've seen, or any fprm of entertainment I've seen in some time for that matter. They're both very funny and play off eachother very well. Check it out.

Another one...

Roujin Z - A device is developed that is meant to be the ultimate solution in patient care. It's an atomic powered bed that takes care of the patient's every need from bathing to bathroom breaks. A dying widower is volunteered as the first patient but, almost predictably, things go completely wrong as the bed suddenly takes its patient out from the hospital and begins a journey across the city that everyone tries to stop without setting off its atomic reactor. It's an amusing, funny, OVA that isn't so much of a moralistic tale as it is a long running comedy routine. There a bit of mature subtext in there, but it doesn't get in the way of the slapstick action that follows.

I love Roujin Z. It's the only anime I know of about old people and the geriatric hackers are amazing. Now, if only I could find the soundtrack...

Yeah anything that Satoshi Kon is involved in = AUTOMATIC WIN

Also, I'm going to procure this Kino's Journey after all this praise. Can't wait.

Ellfen Lied anime was great!!
I never knew an anime love story would keep my attention for so long.
But 13 episodes?? NYU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ending got me in tantrums because I wanted to see MOAR, but then again it ends well with the silhouette of
Lucy returning home

Im reading the manga right now. There's some stuff that wasn't incorporated in anime that is *appealing*
;)

Later on I'll start watching Black Lagoon.
