Well, your perspective on the film, having already seen and appreciated the TV series to the level where you even grasp the allusions to Jung and Hesse and all that jazz, will be vastly different (& more prepared) than mine fresh eyes were the first time around, so that should certainly help things.
Which is not to say that the movie doesn't stand on its own - I think it does, and it is certainly a thing of beauty in many ways - but more that it is more hostile to new and/or less thoughtful viewers, as well as that I simply think I wasn't mature enough at that point in my life to grasp much on a deeper-than-surface level and especially not something so outwardly bizarre as Adolescence Apocalypse. It was at least intriguing enough to get me to watch the TV show, which, being one of the handful of art works that I can say have genuinely and deeply affected my outlook and thinking on art and life and stuff, I would attribute to 'priming' me enough to dig the movie - and, later, even more abstract and intently allegorical things like Angel's Egg - when I later rewatched it, for more than just reasons of plot similarity and character familiarity.
So...watch the movie! And then make sure to consult this extensive list I made that no one actually saw nor read!

And I loved every insane minute of Arakawa Under The Bridge
What's up with anime and cousin love? It was weird in Sword Art Online and Elfen Lied. I'm sure there's more. It feels so creepy.
Has anyone seen parasite dolls? It's pretty weird.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, in the best possible way (WTF doesn't automatically equal bad).
I'm pretty big into Bubblegum Crisis too, I own all of them except Parasite Dolls. I even own the excellent A.D. Police.

BRS is probably the most pretentious animu I ever enjoyed.
Maybe I just enjoyed it more than I would have because I figured out the internal world thing was just a metaphor for them being lesbians.
What's that GIF from?
I saw Puni Puni Poemi for the first time earlier this week. I'm shocked at how much wtfery they crammed into 2 22 minute blocks.
There is no anime anymore that makes me go WTF.
That's what makes it good.![]()
Kūchū Buranko. It makes my mind bleed.
What's that GIF from?
PenguinDrum is a pretty good mindtrip.
I just watched Neon Genesis Evangelion a few weeks ago. That scene during the End of Evangelion with the "tumbling down" music playing. I seriously said WTF out loud during that scene. The music combined with the shit that going on was just too much.
Catchy song though.

End of Eva is a magical experience.
Have you seen the rebuild movies? 2.0 does something simliar. I saw it in the theatre and man, oh man the theatre was dead silent once the credits started and the looks on peoples faces.
So many "WTF" looks in one room.
It's about penises and vaginas.obligatory FLCL mention
Strike Witches
It's about penises and vaginas.
Such a fitting metaphor for freedom that I'm surprised nobody thought of it before Ikuhara.I remember that when I first saw Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence Apocalypse, the movie based on the tv show, before I had seen the tv show, I was utterly bewildered by the [whole thing, really, but especially a particular scene in the] ending which was maybe the weirdest thing I'd seen in a cartoon up until that point in time.
Here it is.
Spoilers.
You're welcome.
