Annoying shit at the gym

This thread reminds of why I bought my own equipment. I like taking my time when I lift heavy(3-5min breaks), and I don't need ppl breathing down my neck.

Good to see everyone going to the gym.

Some things I LOVE people do at the gym is when I see people doing moves I wouldn't even imagine of doing. Some inspirational stuff.

You wash down a machine with a cloth, fuck yeah. Don't forget that

Stay hydrated GAF

I hate gyms in general, too costsly just to go an workout and regulars become caricatures.

Easier to get a home gym equipment and workout there then go for a run, IMO.

A lot of you get upset by dumb shit. Who cares if someone else wears gloves? Who cares if they have bad range of motion? Neither of those things impact me or are worth even a moment of my thoughts.

What does bother me?
1) People that don't re-rack their weights
2) People that don't clean up after themselves (sweat, chalk, food wrappers, etc)
3) People that don't let other people work in when doing the same types of lifts at a similar weight

I can write a book on annoying shit at the gym. Here is an example of one person who I call "Jackass" because he's everything that bothers you in the gym all in 1 person. (Am I the only one that makes up names for people in the gym?)

This is what "Jackass" does

-Screaming grunts. I can hear this guy across the gym
-Hords lots of Dumbbells
-Uses his back for every exercise and gets zero range of motion
-Slams weights
-Screams to himself
-Takes up benches when he's across the gym using cables
-Attire is wearing a weight belt, gloves and elbow pads
-Dude is 50 and lifts like an idiot
-Does the same routine 7 days a week
-Drinks pre workout and 3 red bulls during the duration of his workout

- People doing exercises with very little range of motion (bench press being the worst offender).

Hey, that's me!

I have been back in the gym for a year now and have been guilty of doing weight that I couldn't take all the way down, but I had convinced myself that my arms wouldn't go lower anyway. About a month ago, I bit the bullet and decided to see if I was lying to myself as much as I thought I was. I took a lot of weight off the bar, and it turns out I was Pinocchio.

I'm now in the process of building myself back up.

I'm just not big on long conversations while sitting at a piece of equipment.

You shouldn't be able to reserve a machine like that. Especially if it's the only one of its kind in the gym. Quit chatting and finish your sets.

The heavy bag in my gym is clearly labelled DO NOT KICK THE PUNCH BAG. Every fucker in the gym now thinks hes Conor McFuckingGregor, ive not only seen people kicking the shit out of it, ive seen people take flying jumping kicks from a running start at it, roundhouse it, and ive seen motherfuckers headbutt it. For fucks sake, its a god damn punch bag, if youre that much of an amazing martial artist why are you doing fucking hurricane kicks in a McFitness gym, go join a real Dojo you fuckin karate kid douche smh

I HAVEN'T MISSED A DAY OF GYM YET BRO.

Seriously though, home gym is a major goal to keep in mind

people who make fun of fatter/out of shape people. I used to work out with people who did that all the time. It was annoying as fuck. They were heavy steroid users though, their self esteem was shit.
If you are on the right pre-workout, everything at the gym is annoying.

Weed is my pre workout now so not much annoys me as I'm usually high af and in my own world

This is a pretty disgusting attitude tbh. "Stop making me aroused, cover up your body with sweatpants in a fucking gym". Do you also take issue with guys who reveal too much of their body with tank tops and shirts with the sleeves and sides cut off? If what women wear to the gym is a problem for you, it's exactly that: your problem.

There's a difference between a guy wearing a sleevless shirt and a chick wearing a thong with what ends up being see-through yoga pants at the gym.

I'm not seriously bothered by either example but don't expect me not to look at some point. I'll watch a guy rep serious weight and admire a human body in good condition, thank you very much

I also occasionally grunt on that last rep that just...won't...fucking...go....UP!

I don't drop the weights though...

I don't think there's anything worse than the jacked dude doing super sets across four machines during rush hour.

I've also seen people just work themselves into a machine without even asking permission.

I hate busy gyms in general but unfortunately I workout at the Y downtown so it's even somewhat busy at like 130pm and there's not nearly enough benches, squat racks, etc.

I miss the planet fitness I used to go to out in the suburbs where nobody was lifting anything during certain times of day.

I'm lucky that my building has a small gym that is usually empty. I don't have any barbells or racks unfortunately, but the dumbbells are enough for most things.

- 30 minutes is an unwritten rule for using any one station (squat rack, treadmill, etc.). In some gyms, it is ACTUALLY written. The other day, a guy was on the only elliptical machine for 45 minutes, and I finally had to ask him how much longer he needed. He claimed 15 minutes but immediately offered just another 5, which I was happy with obviously, but the idea that he intended to go another 15 if nobody said anything was frustrating.

- I will never understand how people don't put dumbbells back in proper order. Laziness is the only explanation.

- A while back, I started politely declining requests for spotting. If something goes wrong, like one of your arms gives out during a bench press and I don't get a good grip or stance to save you, guess what? I could be legally culpable for your injury. I don't want that risk.

People who cross my path when I'm doing lunges, there's a whole lot of space around me but you have to walk in front of me right?

My absolute biggest pet peeve is when you walk in front of someone who's in the middle of a set. I would say 95% of the people at my gym follow this rule and it's infuriating.

This really depends on the available space. If you stand too close to the barbells, to the point where I have to lean in from the side to grab two for me, I couldn't care less if it bothers you. You should always be aware of the space around you so that others can still move freely.

truthfact, get one these shirts

it gives you a nice 10% gain boost, super effective if you purchase some pregains, creagains and betagains alongside them

jokes aside though, i would like a home gym but i aint got money for that and ill have to build a shack for it on the patio. sounds like a good idea and project for the future

Wow. Most of this stuff should not bother you. Some of you need to get a home gym.

I mean, people looking at themselves in the mirror is a problem? At a gym? In a mirror filled room? Doing an activity that demands balance and form?

Bro...

The only thing that really really drives me nuts is the vile stench in the restroom from all the young dudes flushing out their bodies with laxatives, supplements and shit.

I've never once seen a good 75% of the things in this thread happen at a gym, nor have I ever heard anyone ever complain aloud about gym etiquette. I'm assuming all of fitness gaf goes to the gym to quietly seethe at all the perceived slights happening around them.

I really don't have any real complaints. People at my gym are pretty nice mostly. Like sure, sometimes people do some stupid shit mentioned in the thread, but I don't mind if it's not consistent.

10 reps on the chest press 10 minutes on my phone, 10 reps on the shoulder press 10 minutes on my phone, left my towel beside the assisted pull up machine as I walk around it and use skype on my phone.

People that stare directly at you.

Women in full make up, men in jeans/tank top/jewelry on.

Generally I'd enjoy the gym much more if I was there completely alone.
What's wrong with men wearing tank top?

And to be honest, what's wrong with wearing jeans or jewelry either? Like, yeah it might be silly sure, but is it your problem? Why does it annoy you?

And what's wrong with women wearing full make up at the gym? Is it your problem? Is this about that you think they're trying to attract attention or something? It might be that sure, but it also might also be, for example, that they're insecure without makeup or that they just like to have it for themselves. Or anything. It doesn't really matter, who are you to judge?

I know this makes me a terrible person, but whenever I need a piece of a equipment, and the person hogging it is a male clearly weaker than me.

I always think to myself: "Hurry the fuck up buddy, you're wasting everyone's time"
Yes, that is pretty horrible.

I'm going to a real gym for the first time tonight, oh god. I just moved and there's a huge one across the street so I figured I'd get a free trial and go from there.

at my previous apartment we had a small workout room but it was usually just the same few regulars. I guess the only recurring annoying thing was the lady who would go on the single elliptical and read a magazine for 2 hours, walking as slow as possible. I just learned her schedule to avoid her. Also this one time there were two super skinny dudes doing what looked like some kind of very, uh, intimate wrestling practice and they were emitting the foulest eye-watering BO stench I have encountered in my life. That was more just a bizarre one off though.

I just ignore everyone else there and get swole. Works every time.

Sometimes I have to kick someone out of the squat rack but I have a power rack at home now so I don't even use it at the gym.

Heres a handy guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1GUQVo1Lps

Honestly not much annoys me at the gym- although i do go when its not crowded. Mostly people who hog stations/machines too long but they'll usually share if you just ask. Also I just got into the habit of cleaning before using anything.

There's alot of angry people in this thread. Lol. Anyway here's my list:
-group of 5 to 6 people working out together, it doesn't make sense. You basically wait 10 minutes and up for your next set. And these guys are basically hogging the equipment.
-fat dudes that stick out their chest and do quarter to half reps at the bench press.
-people that spot you and lift almost everything so that they could get away from you.
-guys that are at the gym just to pick up girls.
-Texting. People that talk alot. People who are loud.

I no longer wait on people using three different machines at once. Either I'll ask them to work in after they finish a set on the machine I need, or just simply start using it.

I've got no problem with people looking at themselves in the mirror while lifting. Not only does it give some a psychological boost, it actually helps to make sure you're using proper form.

Another thing I can't stand is when people have no respect for others around them. Too many times have I seen people start lifting weights standing way too close to someone already in the middle of doing bench presses and refuse to move. I get that it might be a smaller gym in some cases, but that's why there is a dedicated free weight area.

Thankfully, my new gym where I just moved is pretty big, and I don't have to worry much about these issues anymore.

Just people taking up a squat rack by doing curls or weird ass exercises usually involving a medicine ball.

There's also this guy who looks perpetually pissed and always curses under his breath while giving people the stink eye and shaking his head. Very uncomfortable when he's around.

Locker room-wise, people who don't use a lock and just leave their shit in the locker unsecured, making it a guessing game which lockers are open and which aren't.

If you're deadlifting and then dropping the weight (not because you can't handle it, just because) you're doing it wrong. :/ Half the exercise is controlling the descent as well as the pull.

No. The entirety of the deadlift exercise is the pull. Not advocating that people toss the barbell to the ground and scream or something, but controlling the descent is not part of the exercise.

This really depends on the available space. If you stand too close to the barbells, to the point where I have to lean in from the side to grab two for me, I couldn't care less if it bothers you. You should always be aware of the space around you so that others can still move freely.

This happens frequently for some reason. Why people do their lifts one foot away from the barbells never ceases to amaze me. Then they give YOU the stink eye when you try to get some weights!

I guess just when it's busy. Days off I'll go around 1-3pm when it's just a few students and older people. When I go after work I have to modify my routines sometimes as I don't like to wait around and want to get out asap.

Podcasts, do my shit and get out.

The only thing that really, REALLY pisses me off at the gym is when people strand RIGHT in front of a dumbbell rack doing sets, blocking you from grabbing or putting back the weights, because this directly effects me. Everything else is mildly amusing tbh.

There's was a guy at my gym who brought a freaking guitar amp, plugged his phone in, and blasted Drake at max volume. Drake. The worst music on Earth.

Let's just say about two weeks after I told him to stop, when he got back from the bathroom the amp "suddenly" stopped working.

You are wrong unless you are talking about SLDL or some other variation. but in general you shouldn't just drop it from the top like you just won a powerlifting comp.

Not much bothers me. Kind of annoying when I don't make it to the gym until 5-6 PM and the equipment I want to use is constantly occupied, but that's just a gym.

I get much more annoyed on the drive there and back than anything else. People need to learn how to drive.

See I am a grunter, sorry I can't really help it I don't mean to but shit is heavy.
I also use my phone between sets as I use an app to track what I actually lift.

My current gym is pretty fantastic, four racks, two deadlift platforms, people more or less put stuff back and it is nice. My biggest peeve at my old gym was the worthless exercises the personal trainers would have their clients do.

Girlz going 2 the gym with their BFF (#lululemon #gettingfit #summerbody) who spend more time and effort talking than, literally, break a sweat. Fortunately, they tend to drop out after a a few weeks. :P

I always think to myself: "Hurry the fuck up buddy, you're wasting everyone's time"

well as long as you don't let people know about your terribleness out loud.

People who see themselves in the mirror all the time.

But this actually helped me improve my squat form.

I think my number one thing I hate to see is people getting in their ten reps in a machine and proceeding to "rest" for 5 minutes as they play candy crush and check instagram.

Just curious: what's "ok" to do in a squat rack/smith machine? Squats, deadlifts?

Fucking Gross

These are all reasons why I stopped going to big gyms. I invested into a dumbbell set and never went back. I work out with those and take advantage of the outside for cardio. In the winter I use my apartment complexes gym for cardio, but I make sure its empty in there.
