Annoying shit at the gym

Excuse me?

I HAVEN'T MISSED A DAY OF GYM YET BRO.

Seriously though, home gym is a major goal to keep in mind

Yeah it's really weird you get like these buff, macho alpha males wearing frequently tighter clothes and working out to the point where it's like they are climbing a mountain. An intense look in the eye, huffing louder and louder, pools of sweat dripping down. And there's like multiple of them, not to mention the runners. They run in unison, right leg and left leg is parallel and timed perfectly. Then they all look at you corner of their eye while working out like "you see what I can do!".

It's really weird so we bought a bowflex, it's really good and I would highly recommend buying any kind of home gym. It's a money saver and you work at you get great results.

more than one minutes between bench press sets? holy fuck

15 seconds MAX between bench press sets.

3 minutes, give or take as long as it is for building, less for toning.

Basically for 3 sets, about 10 to 12 minutes is fair.

If the person is on the machine for 3 sets and 20 minutes, they be a douche.

Agree.

I do a set of crunches in between each bench press set. (yes, on the floor next to the bench, I don't leave and return. That's annoying as fuck when people do that)

15 seconds in between each set is just stupid. Unless you're not doing a lot of weight and small sets I don't see how you can be ready for another set after 15 seconds.

gloves are good. can't be having torn up fingers. girls don't like that.

bench/arm/upper body day - gloves
deadlift/back day - no gloves
squat/core day - no gloves
cardio day - no gloves

Hahaha i wear gloves when i am lifting due to girls telling me how soft my hands are. Of course not with cardio. My brother makes fun of me. But i give no fucks

Regarding walking around naked in the locker room: Who gives a fuck? Are you that insecure in your sexuality? Just look in another direction.

Regarding squat depth: Quarter squats are obviously pathetic. But not everyone can go ass to ground. Depending on body proportions, flexibility and hip bone structure, some people struggle to hit parallel. I'm one of these people. I can just go to parallel, but if I go any deeper I get the dreaded butt wink which puts my lower back in peril. Ass to ground is great if you have the body for it, as with correct technique the bounce you get at the bottom can actually make the lift easier. This requires you to drop down pretty quickly though which is not advisable unless you are experienced, as your form may suffer if you don't really know what you're doing.

Just curious: what's "ok" to do in a squat rack/smith machine? Squats, deadlifts?

In the power rack: barbell squats, rack pulls, barbell shoulder press, barbell lunges, barbell Bulgarian split squats, barbell bench press (if you're not there with someone you trust can spot you properly), pull-ups if there are no other options for that.

Smith machine: there is really no reason to be using this for anything. I mean, using it for squats, bench press or shoulder press isn't bad etiquette or anything, but should only be done if there are no other options as it has a negative impact on form. I guess you could use them for reverse bodyweight rows?

deadlift and back day is when i use gloves. No gloves for the rest. How the hell are your palms in tact doing deadlifts?

Gloves will negatively affect your deadlifts. They effectively make the bar thicker, which makes it harder to grip and reduces your grip strength. Sure, lifting without gloves will give you calluses; that's part of lifting.

My gym has this thingy bar where you can do chin, ups pull ups of all kinds and dips. I use it to do dips, and chin ups mostly.

Anyways, I was once doing weighted chin ups. I was doing five reps in each set, mostly because I'm fat and heavy and I have 25 lbs more on me with my dipping belt. This one guy was looking and walking around while I was doing that. Then he came and hardcore just looked at me standing there. I thought maybe he wanted to use the space.

He says to me "oh I just wanted to say good job on those. Especially in the last one." I said oh, okay, thanks.

Not really annoying but I was wondering if I was doing something wrong or wanted the space to do pull ups or dips or something. I don't like it when people are looking at me, especially when I'm doing something. It makes me uncomfortable.

It was also kind of random. I've had other people be like "hey good job!" and while it can be nice, I kind of feel it's unnecessary and can't help but wonder if I'm being mocked lol.

Dude, if you're fat and can do sets of five, while ADDING WEIGHT, that's seriously impressive. I can barely squeeze out four at bodyweight and I'm average weight.

Great thread! I've only been going for 3 months but shit that's annoyed me so far is:

- People hovering around you to try and hurry you up on a machine.

I mean, they may not do it to hurry you up. They may just want to make sure they'll get to use it first when you're finished.

Yeah, it's much more efficient for me and I prefer straight curl bars as well. I have clamps there, I have 2.5 lb plates that I went on an adventure all around to find when I got finished with my warm up. Squat -> overhead press -> bent over rows OR Squat -> shrugs -> curls and i'm moving on.

If you've gathered up all the 2.5 lb plates, I hope you let people use them when you're doing sets where you don't use them.

I go to a company-run gym, generally speaking I'm rarely annoyed by my fellow gym-goers, though maybe people are more behaved because we work in the same company.

Every now and then people fuck with the music or don't put weights back where they belong, but most of the regulars are people who all have the same interest in keeping the gym tidy. People grunting, dropping weights and wearing yoga pants don't bother me much, quite frankly as long as they don't actively behave like assholes I kind of don't care.

I do use my smartphone, talk shop with colleagues and rest between sets, so I might be on some other people's lists :V.

Not re-racking weights. It's so frustrating even when I'm not using the equipment. So many times I walk into the gym and there's weights all over the equipment but no one to be seen. Then other people ask me if they're being used since no one bothered to re-rack.

bruh you need to develop callouses so you can become a tough mother fucker

then just moisturize when you get home :)

Gloves for bench, but not deadlift?

No gloves ever for me, but that seems like strange logic.

Anything that requires or strongly benefits from a rack and bar. Examples:
Squats, lunges, shrugs, military press, rows, extremely heavy calf raises (IMO)

It's bad form to use the rack for anything that can easily be done elsewhere. Examples:
Curls, bench presses (IMO)

Some of it is arguable. You can do dumbbell presses and shrugs instead of a military press. It's nice to really load up the bar and do those at the rack though. If you really want to load up for a press without risking dropping it on your chest, that's understandable too. On the other side of the argument, you can do squats with dumbbells. Point being it's less effective and more difficult to hit a weight you'd more easily be able to handle with a bar and setup with a rack.

Unarguably, the worst etiquette is hogging the rack >30 minutes while you do 10 different exercises, especially if you're hogging up the deadlift mat as well, taking long breaks, using your phone, etc. Expect some stink eyes if you're that guy.

The only thing I disagree with you is benching in the squat rack. We have two AWFUL benches at my place and its easier for me to bench in a squat rack. I also go at 6am so its not busy and I don't get in anyones way.

Don't use gloves. Get some damn chalk.

Hahaha i wear gloves when i am lifting due to girls telling me how soft my hands are. Of course not with cardio. My brother makes fun of me. But i give no fucks
I unno man. Soft hands don't seem like something to strive for. Never met a girl who go crazy for a man with soft bands.
This works the other way too. A girl once asked me to spot her while benching. When she was clearly struggling I reached out and barely touched the bar and she screamed at me saying she's got it.
You in the wrong, man. Don't touch the bar unless it's coming back down or the person gives okay.

The worst thing i've noticed at the gym is people playing their own music through their phone speakers. Even if there are only 4/5 other people in the entire gym, that shit is still not cool. A while ago some assholes even brought a portable bluetooth speaker they were using to blast music.

15 second rest between sets bwhahaha. That's straight cardio and a strength killer if you're lifting anything close to Max weight

I base my rest time on intensity. Near 1RM is four to five minutes rest.

Seriously the funniest shit i've read in a fitness thread on gaf.
That like finishing benching. Racking it. Sitting up and immediately laying down and starting your next set. 15 f'ing seconds hahaha.

take pic in gym. say you went in for a 2 hour session. pic is non-sweaty image and lecture about how important is to do this and that. post it on IG.

Rest time is basically why I just bought my own lifting equipment to use at home. I'm doing the Starting Strength novice program, and I like to rest upward of 7-8 minutes in between squat sets just to make sure I don't miss any reps and so I give maximum effort while maintaining good form. And because right now I am still fucking out of shape. I couldn't really do that in a commercial gym without feeling like I was hogging equipment, even though it's what I feel I need to do for my particular program.

That's fair. I know it's arguable and there are good reasons to do it (ultra heavy short reps, testing max, etc). It's just that in my gym there's 1 rack and 3 benches and getting into the rack can be very hit and miss.

People complaining about BO: I sweat a lot during any kind of exercise so I'll be stinking up the place already after one or two sets even if I'm wearing recently washed clothes. Not really anything I can do about it. I take care of my hygiene and never have BO issues anywhere else. But this is a gym, not a cocktail party. Some stink is to be expected.

*guy finishes set on machine X, gets up and goes to machine Y*

*i approach machine X and start to adjust it for me*

"hey bro im still using that. im rotating between machines X Y and Z."

are fucking serious? so nobody can use 2 out of 3 machines apart of your dumb rotation because your routine is more important than any of the other paying members being able to get their workout? consume a container of penises.

I legit fucked my back up going low on heavy squats. Herniated disk. Fucked my entire year up and only now feeling 90%. I am going to be focusing more on box squats as a substitute. I've always done front squats as well but couldn't go heavy for the past few months cuz of that dreadful back pain. I've been training in pain for the past 3 months. Not fun and not worth it.

Squats are the only exercise that fucked me up. Happened twice. once I felt that "pop" I knew it was gonna be bad.

Deodorant?

Deodorant?

Yes, every day. Doesn't help when I exercise

just because you sweat doesn't mean you should stink, especially if it's fresh sweat...you might have something else going on if you stink of BO after 30 minutes exercise

I mean, I can maybe avoid it if I take a shower just minutes BEFORE doing exercise. But I can barely fit going to the gym into my schedule as is, so I'm not doing that.

No gloves ever for me, but that seems like strange logic.

Gloves provide padding, not grip.

Padding for the palm during a press. Gloves can slip and shift when pulling - not exactly a good idea when picking up 400+ lbs.

I remember when I used to work out. Complicated relationship but I did enjoy it. The worst I saw and experienced was some dude blatantly checking out all the other girls there. Like geesh. The worst I did was pretend to be a bro. Gross!!
"Hey dude, what's the best protein shake. I repped like crazy." Hah.

Will definitely work out again one day, though, it was a lot of fun!

Wear them calluses like badges of honor. Fuck gloves.
You'll be singing a different tune with nerve damage in your palm and even 50lb dumbbells cause you to wince in pain from the pressure. Sometimes a tiny bit of a buffer between you and a solid piece of steel when you're pushing heavy weight can alleviate the pressure just enough to not cause crippling pain.

Its not always about callouses.

I've been to many gyms in my lifetime and I have no idea why any of them allow cutoffs. Most people don't wipe down lifting machines so their underarms just drip everywhere with sweat.

Everyone has a t shirt they can wear. And people that wear cutoffs to try and show off will deal. Stop allowing cutoffs in gyms.
Having used multiple machines, generally wearing a tank top and sweating a lot, I'm having a really hard time seeing how one drips the machines with their underarm sweat.

Like, I use a towel always as my back is so wet from sweat, but underarms moistening everything? I just can't see it. Like, the sweat doesn't just fly everywhere, it still falls to your clothes. Or maybe I just don't notice it as I use a towel anyway, or then my underarms don't sweat as much as the guys you're talking about.

What kind of music?

People who don't rerack are the worst...like, even those that don't wipe it down after, not re-racking is the laziest shit. it's often the biggest dudes too - gym im at, it's the upper body with chicken legs dudes. thankfully it's a small gym.

oh, and if we have one squat bar & several preacher ones? don't do your fucking curls on that one bar, man...ugh.

- People who ask me how many sets I got left when I'm mid-exercise triggers me like few other things. Happened to me a couple of times and sometimes led me to finish my set prematurely because I lost focus.

yeah, i usually wait, it's rude to cut someone off unless they're stopping forever

- Leaving your keys/phones/water next to a machine to "reserve" it while using another machine

- Girls in bikinis (sport bra and super short shorts)

- Basketball balls always old, pretty much unusable

- Takes months to fix a broken machine

- People blasting music from their phones (no headphones)

- People lifting weights in walking designated area.

- Employees flirting with girls and not putting away weights

- The loud group of people that always workout together

- People on their phones 24/7 sitting down on a workout machine

I think i got costo on a bad day on chest. It's been like 3 weeks away from the weights and i'm really depressed.

Hope you have a full recovery dude.

Watching basketball in the gym lockeroom before I head out, and a few naked people start to flock to the tv, have a squat, and hang out in the buff. Only mildly upsetting. Put on something, come back

The guys who stop and make eye contact with any mirror for a flex. Even if its right over your shoulder.

Strange, I have never heard of anyone suffering from this due to weight lifting

This thread makes me nervous for when I start going to the gym. The previous times I've went I just end up looking stupid not knowing what to do.

People bitching about other people in the gym even when it doesn't actually change anything about their own routines. I noticed this happens a lot with newbies who keep talking all day about proteins and food and what not, they quickly learn to bitch about others, immediately trying to set themselves apart from the other newbies. I guess it makes people feel better about themselves. Also, gym heads who complain for the same reasons.

Stop using the gym as an excuse to think you're better than others.

Very useful. Thank you.

I figured curls are something you shouldn't do there. I just stick to squats and calf raises, one after another. Trying to work my way up to lunges but lunges are hard enough so I'm pacing myself.

Also, just learned what shrugs are. Seen people do them and as soon as I read "shrugs" it clicked.

Honestly, the only thing that is annoying are people doing sets. I.E. They take 10 minutes to do 3 sets of 10. Squat, Bench, Chair, whatever.

And people who don't fucking clean up after themselves. Not putting the weights back or wiping down the machine after use. They need to be kicked out. Disgusting fucks.
I get why you mad but why not just ask to jump in between sets?

Folks doing deadlifts at a squat rack when there's open space elsewhere.

I see this more than the running gag of doing curls at a squat rack.

i'm nervous about this kinda because the gym i go to has a relatively small weight area with three squat racks and no space anywhere else to do deadlifts but i'm hoping because i go there at 8:30-9 at night, no one will care if i deadlift in the squat rack because there's usually only 2-3 other people there. i start deadlifts tonight tho so we'll see.

People slamming the shit out of the machines/dumbbells is annoying to me.

At my gym we have five combined Squat/Bench/Deadlift machines so you either use those or you're shit out of luck.

what really makes my blood boil when they blast their shitty music in the sauna. people are trying to relax... how more inconsiderate could you be
