I know it's like there are "illegal laws " or something :S . also -reads through thread- sigh "I don't want to live on this planet anymore":(

I meant legal rights. Was too angry at the stupidity to pay attention to what I was writing. =D

How much of Sony's problems this gen are a result of making their hardware more open? I'd guess roughly zero. If they make it a more closed-off platform next gen, it's not because it hurt them this gen at all.

Roughly zero?

So, Geohot trying to use a RAM exploit in Linux wasn't one? People using a jig jailbreak by using 3rd party controllers/devices wasn't an issue as well?

Sony modified his quote to make it appear he had targeted them, when in reality he made an open offer to any of the three manufacturers to help them make their next generation more secure.

Thankfully there's no laws against modifying someone's words in legal documents :D

Is there any proof of that happening? Or is it internet urban legend?

Proof of which? His offer was on his twitter account I believe. Sony's modifying of it was bolded in another thread about groklaw coverage I think. They cut off the 'any of you three' part without indicating it wasn't the full quote.

Edit - it was one his website I guess. An early note about the breaking: "if you want your next console to be secure, get in touch with me. any of you 3.
it’d be fun to be on the other side.
…and this is a real self, hello world"

Logged into PSN, and PS.com just fine, thread title should change.

Doesnt work for me

Then again, the site is probably down because everyone is checking it to see if its down, causing it to crash haha

So that was his pitch huh? Lol.

Such a bad-ass!

Do note the fact that PSN is a worldwide service and they all don't use the same servers. For most it's up. For some, it's down.
This is true, the title does make it seem like it's completely down for all though.

You can hardly call these people hackers. For the DDOS attacks Anon does, you basically just download a program, input some information, and let it run on your computer. Maybe I just watch too many movies but I've always perceived hacking as involving at least a little programming, worms, spyware, or illegal hardware.

Reverse psychology DDOS attack. Its genius!

Its only down for Sony collaborators. You know who you are.

Yeah, because until last year Sony was riding high on a wave of multi-million selling titles ensured by the lack of piracy on their system. Their open platform concept also enabled them to outsell the competition hardware-wise by a good chunk every month as consumers, almost to a man, rejected the notion of closed platforms!

Oh right, that shit didn't happen. Their struggles this gen came down to an absolutely horrible launch price and the loss of mindshare that being late to market brought with it. They won with BluRay though, so that's something right?

What is your point? You said zero of their problems came from their open platform, I proved you wrong, and you spout this irrelevant shit.

strange, I always use that link.

GeoHot's approach went nowhere and resulted in nothing. It wasn't until the Jailbreak that he found a way in.

The jailbreak was a result of what again? Oh right, Sony screwing up encryption on a basic level. Must have decided their encryption should be "open" too.

IIRC no one made headway on hacking until the SDK leaked, but that is a whole nother topic.

Actually, the PS3 has sold slightly more units per month on average than the 360 worldwide (48 million in 4 years versus 50 million in 5 years). I don't think it had much to do with the PS3 being a more open platform than the 360, though.

And, of course, the Wii was released at the same time as the PS3 and has sold much better.

I'm confused about this open platform talk. If PS3 was an open platform then why are they suing Geohot? I must have a different definition of open. Seems just as closed as ever to me, and they're willing to sue to keep it that way.

Australian site works fine? Not sure if Anonymous would really bother hacking Sony because of Geohot, seems a little counter-productive to the helping the little guy (ie the people who use the system, us). I'm sure there are one or two hackers who are peeved at the whole deal though.

Not everyone agrees just because something is against the law it's wrong. Especially if said law was only passed due to lobbying by media companies.

oh right, certainly this is a law worth breaking. Truly this hacking and damaging of Sony's business and their partners (and, in this case, their consumers too) is an act on par with the civil disobedience of the 60s. Geohot is the technology age's Martin Luther King Jr.

The Pope has given his blessing:

Sancti Apostoli Petrus et Paulus: de quorum potestate et auctoritate confidimus ipsi intercedant pro nobis ad Dominum. Amen.

Precibus et meritis beatæ Mariae semper Virginis, beati Michaelis Archangeli, beati Ioannis Baptistæ, et sanctorum Apostolorum Petri et Pauli et omnium Sanctorum misereatur vestri omnipotens Deus; et dimissis omnibus peccatis vestris, perducat vos Iesus Christus ad vitam æternam. Amen.

Indulgentiam, absolutionem et remissionem omnium peccatorum vestrorum, spatium verae et fructuosae poenitentiæ, cor semper penitens, et emendationem vitae, gratiam et consolationem Sancti Spiritus; et finalem perseverantiam in bonis operibus tribuat vobis omnipotens et misericors Dominus. Amen.

Et benedictio Dei omnipotentis, Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti descendat super vos et maneat semper. Amen.

It's not exactly "open" it's just they give you the choice in certain aspects of the console, as opposed to Nintendo or Microsoft giving you no choice at all.

It is. They're law breaking douchebags, and have also worked to hurt consumers now. Sue the shit out of them until they can afford no quarter. Destroy their lives. End of line.

Nobody is impressing anyone with third grade idealism based on the testicular end of retardation. You purchased a system, you broke the law, you hurt consumers, you hurt the online environment. This is neither noble nor a cause worth fighting for. Only one worth relentlessly mocking the kiddies over

I always have a simple creed. If you break the law, be man enough to accept the consequences when you are caught. That is the way you play it. When I break the law, I fully accept I may get in trouble for doing so. I am not going to start a petty appeal to the all simpleminded folk to come to my aid for doing so. This is not exactly a law that you need a e-sit in over in order to provide social commentary on the injustice of it.

In reality, there are reasons these protections are in place. Something was done Sony perceived (rightfully, as is now clear) was going to damage their business, and they went after someone who broke the law and advertised the fact they were doing so. This individual is also a tardface. And now we have a second row of fucking retards baying like fucking sheep hurting - tangibly, mind you, unlike the concept this whole bullshit started over - the very consumers they claim to be trying to help. A parade of mouthbreathing piglets.

I hope Sony eviscerates them.

I can guarantee you that if the x360 was hacked with the same level of complete access to everything, Microsoft would go to war and legally trash the shit of anyone behind this; and they would be way harsher than Sony.

The difference here is that the 360 requires extra hardware, firmware flashing and etc, which is harder for the average joe to do; the only thing the ps3 requires is a usb key with the right files on it, and you just press 'next next next'. Also, the access given by the exploit is way wider than the dvd drives firmwares business on the 360.

Ask around; my younger cousin is 13, hardcore gamer as you could get, his ps3 isnt modded but pretty much everybody he knows from highschool shared the same usb key and they are all running custom firmwares; he counted at least 20-30 people he knows of. They swap with each other usb drives stuffed with games and they are building up huge collections. Most of those kids have 360s too, but they dont want to risk losing XBL over this.

THIS is the kind of stuff Sony is trying to prevent and thats why they are going all out. You can't really blame them; let's be honest

PS3 was never "open". PC's are open. PS3 has always been a closed off machine like any other console. Sony just allowed a lot of nonproprietary peripherals to be hooked up, but that doesn't make the console open.

Man, I feel very old all of the sudden. I remember in my days of junior high, we traded Pogs and thought it was cool to spray down a tennis ball with WD40 and play with that all night. -siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh-

We are the almighty protectors of those who don't need protection. We will protect your right to drive.........

We'll just need to close the highways for a while.

I bet you'd be surprised if Bacardi went after your ass for doing illegal drugs. Should this not be a police matter if laws were broken? Or is the lesson you are trying to impart here "don't cross a big corporation, they will fuck you up - and all the mouthbreathers will happily cheer them on"

If I go to a police station and yell "I AM DOING ILLEGAL DRUGS" and then shockingly get tackled by police men who are going to make sure I am prosecuted, I am not going to whine like a little bitch because that's what happens.

Geohot broke the law, knowingly harmed Sony's business, and then advertised it. And now he simpers like a little child when a business rightfully pursues their interests. We see now also what Anonymous thinks helping "us" means - it really means self-promotion while simultaneously damaging innocent consumers access to Sony's online community. For the, *ahem*, "lulz." Seriously these guys are made up of three year olds.

We are living in a world of seriously warped, idealistic kiddies who genuinely believe these individuals warrant sympathy. It is among the most hilarious gaming news events of the past five years.

uk ps working fine, this is acutally the first time since last june that i've actually visited the damn site.
