Another Nintendo patent drops: Massively Single-Playing Online Game

Lets just hope that Nintendo moderates the rumours somehow, otherwise douchebags will just ruin the game by adding worthless messages using the rumour system instead of talking directly to you. When you interact with an NPC you'll here: - I've heard a rumour that [offensive message].

Gamespot pretty much sucks, again, it was NeoGAF that made them aware of this in the Animal Crossing thread.
And it's probably unrelated to AC as it's a patent from NSTC/NoA.

An online game where the interaction between players is done through the environment could be quite cool if done in the right way. Demon's Souls x Animal Crossing would be awesome.

huh? What do you want to tell me with that? That they are gullible?

The filing includes more eyebrow-raising information beyond the "massively single-player" concept. Specifically, it refers to an implementation of the idea on "a home video game system such as the Nintendo Wii 3D video game system, a Nintendo DS or other 3D capable interactive computer graphics display systems." While Nintendo has highly touted 3D in its 3DS handheld, the company publicly backed away from the idea of a 3D-capable successor to the Wii earlier this year, suggesting that the glasses currently required by 3D TVs would be a deal breaker for consumers.

That passage is for a good laugh. They are talking about video game systems that cannot only display 2D games like Super Mario World, but also 3D titles such as Super Mario 64. But that would've required some thinking and could not be directly copied from GAF or any other site.

I just thought since you were talking Gamespot learning shit from GAF, I was just posting a link to the article that I thought you were going to put in your post so other people could see it

this sounds weird. i dont know why i would want to interact with other people if i dont actually interact with them.

There is also prior art that could be used to invalidate this.
like demons soul?

maybe it is more specific or maybe it as some unique architecture? is there a link to the patent itself?

and I too think it should be for lego city game they announced in e3.

Seems to techy for Nintendo. They only make dummy-proof games.
Even though I would be super happy if it's true.

This sounds cool. Now when it comes to patents like this, is it going to end up like Namco's load screen mini-game patent where no other companies can use this idea? That would suck if only Nintendo could do something like this.

That patent always bothers me. There's prior art!

No, it's completly Nintendo-like.

Miyamoto: We should make a MMO.

Iwata: But, wait, we can't allow the children to interact with random people online.

Miyamoto: You're right. We'll make a MMO where you will only see the people that you already have in your friend list. Or, even better, a single player MMO. You'll only see the other people creation, but never other people.

Iwata: That sounds better. Just get sure that the editing tools don't allow to make penises.

did that patent succeed? I currently can't remember a game with mini game at load screen.

Yes. Namco got it, and some Namco games has minigames in the loading screen (Ridge Racer Minigame has Rally X), and other companies can't have minigame in loading screen.

I for one am looking forward to more games like this. I've learned to dislike multiplayer titles that don't allow you to toggle all the chats on and off as you please. People can be so fucking rude for no reason. In the end most of the cool people end up playing with their friends list anyway.

I'm sort of reminded of Demon's Souls with some of this information...
Came to say this.

I don't know patent law, and frankly I find it immoral and absurd that companies can just round up and own 'ideas', but what if someone does something or builds something that infringes an approved patent before the patent is filed?

Does that invalidate the patent? Patents and copyright are really important and it is an absolutely fundamental part of business ethics, but what Nintendo and apple and some other companies do, just blindly patenting any and every idea whether they intend to use it or not to ensure that they can take some money from someone else who thinks of using something with an inherently (or not) similar design or idea down the track disgusts me.

How does the US even have a system where an artistic idea can be patented? This is fucking ridiculous.

Question for legal-GAF: even if we pretend there's no previous prior cases of this idea (because there are a ton), would this even stand up in a US court if Nintendo pressed charges on a game that did something similar? Because it sure as shit wouldn't stand up in any other nation's court.
