Anti-homeless street spikes

Regardless of the morals it's aesthetically stupid for a business to do this, because any person walking in will see that and realise this business is happy to disuade human beings by threatening to impale them.

I wouldn't really call myself a defender of the homeless, but there are at least a hundred better solutions than this. Putting in a bench or a planter, for example.

Santa Monica has the same problem as SF. Huge numbers of homeless, and buses that bring them there.

There are some parks where it's just homeless city. It's really sad, because kids are afraid to play there, and obviously because there's so many homeless.

There was a guy who used to sleep against the door of our office building, which sucked because we were often working late and would have to slam the door into the guy's back to wake him up and get him to move when you wanted to leave.

I always wondered why they slept in the middle of the entryway as opposed to the side, where people could get by easily. The response from this guy: "If you leave a bunch of space someone else is gonna come and try and sleep next to you."

Two years ago I would have been outraged too, but opinions quickly change if you personally have to deal with homeless people on the front door of your home every fucking day. Peeing and shitting in your stairwell. Theatening to kill you because you want them to leave.
A lot of them are so far gone on substance abuse, there is barely any humanity left.
Even animals don't shit where they sleep.

And yes not all homeless people are like this. But the bad one are sooo bad, they ruin it for all of them.

I've noticed a sharp increase in how aggressive people who beg have become over the past few months. Not sure why, but they seem far more aggressive in asking for money, often grabbing you if you have headphones on, becoming threatening if you don't have change or if you have change but don't give them what they feel is enough.

It's really weird. Not sure if those specific examples are actually homeless people or people simply begging for alcohol, drugs or betting money, but it's seen me go from someone who routinely gave change to someone who asks to now walking past most of them as quickly as possible.

This probably isn't relevant to the thread though, so apologies for going off topic.

Oh, don't you dare go into those shades of grey!

You monster!

I don't think it is.

I personally think this wasn't done unless they had a very good reason.

So the government took away their shelter twice; once when they fucked up the economy and caused the homelessness problem in the first place and again after they were made homeless.

Never let it be said that politicians live up their own asses.

Stuff like this seems to slowly be becoming a thing in some areas, which is quite worrying. Aren't some areas of the US passing laws where people can be fined for feeding the homeless as well?

Fake edit: Indeed they are

That's fucked up. Everytime I stagger through the streets in a drunken stupor between my place to some bomb takeout place (or even just fast food), I'll pick up something for homeless people I see standing out in the cold.

True story, a well-known local hobo lived in my shed for nearly a year. The shed's roof was destroyed by a huge tree, but he rebuilt it and carried away segments of the tree. What I know about his past is from town gossip - once a well-paid professional but lost his mind to a brain parasite. His account is that a witch put a hex on him. The photo in his ID is an amazing transformation and a reminder that it can happen to you.

Warm-hearted guy. People like him should be given an apartment and staff to manage his life. I am way high-balling here, but I don't care if it costs $100 billion a year. Just do it. If you approve of those spikes, you might as well be advocating for alligator moats.

That was a nice story but then you had to get all ridiculous in your last sentence

Am I right in saying we don't actually know why these spikes were installed? There has been a lot of jumping to conclusions in the thread. That building might be a business, it might be a residential property with children going past that have been hassled? We don't kmow.

Hell, maybe it isn't for homeless people at all, but for kids who keep loitering there? This is from the UK, right? I am from London and we had a problem in my estate of kids sitting outside blocks of flats, spitting, throwing rubbish and other anti social behaviour (one threw a glass bottle at my brother). The council installed spikes so the kids couldn't sit down, this could be something similar. Who knows.

I see they've finished building the level. Now we just need to find a couple of homeless guys who we can dress up as Sub-Zero and Scorpion.

Little kid falls on them. loses eye. Council is fucked.

How could they even begin to think this was a good idea?

It's probably private offices rather than a council building, so the responsibility would lie with the owner of the property.

That's got me thinking about town planning regulations though - I wonder if there's anything that forbids this sort of thing?

That's a fair point - and I assume it would be cheaper and require less maintenance than one of those 'mosquito' things that makes a high-pitched noise that adults can't hear.

As a protest, perhaps someone can put some cheese and pineapple on each one and throw a party.

Wait, people actually think putting a bench there instead of spikes will do the same job?

One is an invitation, the other is the exact opposite.

Sooner or later, some kid is going to hurt themselves on those things. Then what?

I understand a private business wanting to protect their property and keep it clean but this us some cold blooded shit. Hell, put garbage cans there or a big ass sign instead. A statue. But spikes? Really?

I kind of wonder if its really to prevent homeless from sleeping there. I mean theres a whole alcove there in front of the doors and a homeless person can simply sleep beside them...
This does absolutely nothing to keep a homeless person from sleeping in that area.

it really is possible for it to happen to anyone, this is something a lot of people refuse to understand. you think your personality is unchangeable, unbreakable? you're wrong. all it takes is a hit on the head and bam, you might lose any ability you used to have. you might lose your ability to concentrate, to write, to memorize things, recognize faces etc etc. ANYTHING can happen to your mind, any day.

if you're a succesful person with no fears of becoming homeless, how confident would you feel tomorrow if you had trouble forming coherent sentences because you fell down the stairs and bumped your head?

I imagine you could kind of thread yourself through the metal handrests. It'd be like sleeping in a cage, but better than the floor.

Edit: that spinning one looks fun.

Lol thats the only one where the creator of the barrier was truly an asshole.
Im all for being human to your fellow man and all but a lot of people are getting riled up over some spikes that probably wont even deter a determined homeless person from sleeping on or around them in the first place. I mean its not like the business put saw blades right there they put little rounded spike things. Not even large ones.

Anyone complaining about this needs to remember that most homeless people will also piss, shit and/or leave drugs paraphernalia such as used needles in corners like that.

I'm sure that would look better than some spikes on the floor.

It wont prevent them from still throwing needles or peeing there though.

Anyone complaining about the treatment of homeless people should remember they are scum and should be treated like vermin.

We had a homeless dude outside our shop last summer and i would buy him water when it got hot. Unfortunatly he brought a lot of drama to the area, he was a crackhead and his crackhead friends would congregate outside. Eventually we had to call the police to arrest him because they started getting aggressive, not towards others but to each other. Shit was pretty theatrical at times.

Maybe this business isn't intentionally targeting all homeless but a specific person/group who is causing problems and won't leave.

Everyone's jumping to conclusions. Maybe this isn't to prevent homeless people from sleeping there, but instead to prevent giant arachnids from nesting in the alcoves and building massive webs in front of the doors to a business that desperately needs living, undrained customers.

A minority of people is expressing a similar sentiment in this thread. If this were public policy, the ultimate goal would be to make every public area uninhabitable until they are forced to live in the wilderness. Western civilization has the resources to deal with homelessness in an effective and humane way, but has decided it is not a priority.

how do spikes prevent any of that? The spikes would just make that more difficult to clean up.
