Anti-tablet gamers, are you interested in Microsoft Surface?

I'm not terribly interested in this thing because I have all my computing needs covered, but you can't really complain about portability here. All tablets are too big to fit in your pockets, so people usually end up carrying them in a bag of sort. It isn't out of the realm of possibility that said bag could also carry a controller.

You probably don't want to put this set up together on the bus or something, but in that case why not just use a 3DS/Vita/Smartphone? Would you bother with bringing out your laptop to game on the bus?

This thing is really just a PC that can be a tablet if you want to surf the web when you're taking a dump. Otherwise you leave it on a desk, which is extremely common for tablets considering how many different stands and cases exist for them to create this behavior.

Default set up is clearly geared for a desk (with the keyboard cover), mobility is just for messing around with. Not particularly aimed at gaming unless they release an abomination controller shell for it.

So who is excited for next years E3?

Was interested in a macbook air 11".... but I really do not like MacOS so i was going to run Win8 on it

However the pro-version of this just seems like a better choice in every way. Best of both worlds? Real windows (can even run Visual Studio, Photoshop etc) and a tablet for casual surfing?

Really impressed by this

Indeed, i think the usefullness of a device you can use everywhere is heavilly underestimated

I use my laptop for XNA programming, 3D studio and Painter-Corel Draw for artwork

If there was a way i could use that in my idle time, to even think about organizing my code and how to implement new systems in the concept phase of the design of each system, or to think how implemented ones could be further enchanced, or look and work on my drawings/ 3D designs while say eating or flying or in bed or anywhere i cant just use my laptop, would be one of the most important things ever

This tablet is just sold to me, the Pro version of course

Id like to use it for playing games that don't really need the horsepower of my gaming rig such as Braid or Trine and the like. Paired with a controller it would be nice to sit out back on the deck under some shade trees or even during the evening to cool down and catch some fresh air. I currently have no tablet experience at all other than seeing a display unit in stores so the whole system as a whole would be new to me. I see getting into one if the price point is just right.

The Pinball Arcade on the iPad is pretty much the only tablet game I play. Not a big fan of most touch screen games.

I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with one, what is it? :) I haven't read any news yet about it.

2 Microsoft tablets with ivy bridge i5 processors in it. One runs only Metro which means for gaming that mean XBLA only while the Pro version runs full Windows 8 so that includes Metro and any desktop application including Steam and emulators.

Also the case is also a keyboard.

Pro version prob going to approach $1000. RT version prob won't have the support and compat to do anything you guys are imagining.

I'm incredibly interested in this. Surface Pro + Expandable storage + 360 controller = the ultimate portable machine, let alone gaming machine.

I'm not expecting to bust out Max Payne on it, but it will be an older title/indie/emu heaven.

Heres a list of all the games that will work on the Pro version:

dpTdY.png

It's all of Steam minus any games that require a GPU better than Intel's HD4000 graphics chipset. And minus any games you don't want to play with a trackpad.

I'd love it for World of Warcraft on the go, except I don't want to use a trackpad or carry a mouse around with me. I might be interested if Blizzard could integrate touch controls into Diablo though :)

Suddenly Xbox Surface doesn't seem so far fetched. They did say Surface was a product line.

There's no need for another Surface. Many upcoming xbla titles will probably be Win 8/RT compatible, since MS seems to be pushing that cross release talk hard.

Now Steam just needs to get a Win RT version out, and let me add RT titles to my library. My god.

Can you take notes or do you work on those?

Though for gaming yeah, I'd generally stick with those.
I own a laptop for work. That is something I can put where I want without the need for the stand. It also has a built-in mouse so for work, a laptop still seems like a better option.

The best part about it that i could even use it to work or game in bed, or on the go, that is its biggest appeal
How, it seems really awful to place somewhere which isn't a table. And if I need a table, what is the point?

For me: As a tablet yes, as a gaming or work machine, no.

A fancy laptop then basically :)

But with the ease of use of a tablet, that is the main attraction comparing to a laptop

The point is that it is a tablet, so you dont need to put it on a table

That is the major thing about all tablets, like iPad, which i can use everywhere

I don't see anything on that image that makes me think I'd use this any more than I use my iPad (which I use quite a bit but not so much for games outside time killing and some rare exceptions). I guess the Windows 8 version would be neat to have as a laptop, able to use all your normal software and have all your documents and files on the go instead of look for compatible alternatives that may or may not be free or good (idk what Windows RT is and if that would work on that version too). But for games? Not so much. 360 controller or no, PC games or no, I wouldn't take this with me unless I needed it for other things beyond that, and wouldn't bother packing a controller or mouse with me. I guess I could play some (old gog style) point & click games (even continue saves from my desktop) if I had to kill time somewhere but I wouldn't care that much. Maybe in bed too.

And yeah, the keyboard should have been a cradle like thing so that you can use it in your lap too.

Wait, people think that you can do some actual 3D gaming on a ULV i5 and integrated graphics?
As the owner of a ultrabook with those exact specs, let me just say that it won't happen, especially not at 1080p.

I don't care about tablets. I don't see a point in owning one at all. But that's just me.

Neither do I. None of the game features will make a difference. Now if the 720 will stream directly to it you can have a fighting games event by taking those two devices with you.

if powerful enough it could be an option instead of a laptop for pc gaming/steam and such, but no way i'd buy this as a tablet for +800$

Which would make using the keyboard very difficult as it doesn't look like it can keep the screen at an angle like with a laptop.

Why use 1080p ?

I will just play games in 720p or 1204x768

The gameplay will still be there, also hopefully there will be ways to attach a 360 pad later so you dont have to use a surface to have it stand

From tests i have seen, even Skyrim runs in 30fps on a 4000 Intel GPU, so it is playable

I'm idiot and never noticed "anti-tablet."

More like Xbox 2.0 if you ask me, and thats a good thing.

Can the keyboard be detached?

The keyboard is an accessory (that comes included), so yes.

I dont think i would want it at an angle if say i use it in bed

Also there will definatly be gadgets later to attach a 360 pad or make the keyboard more rigid etc

My only worry is if the pen can replace the mouse well in programs, that is indeed a thing that could limit its usefullness

I had forgotten about onLive too :), that could be another option

I was much more interested in Asus's Transformer Book line. Those are supposed to have an Ivy Bridge processor on the tablet but also a keyboard dock with extra battery and a discrete graphics card. Now that's what I would call a gaming tablet.

These do seem better hardware wise, but they are bigger and probably a lot heavier

They do look very interesting too though, if they have a stylous option like Surface and the battery can last hwile gaming, they may be a good alternative

anything without a proper controller will always be for a casual fix for me

it's fine because touch and casual games work great

This are my thoughts. I'm not really sure why Mark is so excited about this, UE is not even needed for casual games.
I like the gadget, the XNA game I'm developing will sure run on this.

You know you can just plug a 360 controller into this thing right?

Have they even released this thing's specs? UE3 already runs pretty badly on low settings on the most powerful desktop Intel sandy bridge integrated graphics, I can't imagine a tablet version running anywhere near as well.

I don't want to sound like a big douchebag, but there's no gaming experience I think I'd want to have where my only input is from pawing at a touchscreen. Especially on a device that I have to physically support with my other hand. I have no interest in the concept of tablet gaming at all, and when the big deal is that you can lean it on a stand and attach a keyboard to it and plug in a mouse or a 360 controller then it's not tablet gaming any more. What you've just made is a clumsy laptop in three or more pieces.

I guess the upside is that you can take those bits off and it's a regular tablet, but I just don't see the point of tablets. I just can't see them as anything but less convenient laptops; I can't really imagine a situation where I'd need to use a computer and wouldn't be better served by a smartphone or a laptop. So, no, a Microsoft Surface doesn't really interest me :P

Very interested in the Pro, though not really for gaming. Still, an ULV Ivy Bridge with HD4000 means a low power DX11 GPU with a very capable CPU. It can run the most resource intensive Steam games at 720p and medium settings well. Add to that an Xbox 360 gamepad or a keyboard and mouse and I can see myself occasionally playing on it.

A wide assortment of strategy games would work brilliantly on a touchscreen. XCOM: Enemy Unknown, for example, would be great on that.

Ms wants portable gaming but not a portable console, nothing changed since zune imo, sorry but apple wins easily.

Win 8 Pro runs everything from legacy Windows + Metro. Win RT is just Metro. Most new Windows apps will be Metro.

Pro could be good replacement for traditional laptop - and then i could see myself buying it if the price is correct compared to ultrabooks.

Then again i would rather just have REAL tablet like the ones we had had before apple stolen the name and released dumbed down version for masses.

Neat little system but I dont think I would use it for gaming. Maybe HDMI'ing it into a TV and using a xbox controller would be cool for indie platformers and stuff.

But now Steam better start selling touch games for Windows 8 tablets.

But knowing Valve we wont see a Metro version of steam for at least another few years. (Hey where is TV view? Been over a year since it was announced)

These tablets look really neat, especially with the keyboard acting like a protection for the screen, and the stuff on the back to hold your tablet. I'd be interested if they were cheaper. 500 and 1000$ for some tablet? No thanks!
