Any Advice for First Day at a Retail Job?

Don't get mad at any perceived injustices. Unless being asked to do something illegal, tow the company line.

It doesn't matter if it seems as if 'bad' customers are being given preferential treatment, and being allowed to 'break the rules' It's not your place to speak up. You are just a register/stock monkey, and aren't paid to think. Your thoughts are not important, and your position doesn't matter. You think it matters that you do a better job than your fellow employees... it doesn't. Just smile, follow the rules, do what your told, and collect your paycheck until you eventually quit.

Hopefully you have a good network of friends. Retail is a shit job and it will destroy your soul. It's nice to be able to hang out with friends to de-stress and have a group you can bitch and moan to. That's the only reason I did it for a year or so when I graduated HS. All my friends at the time also worked retail, so they knew what I was going through and it was good therapy.

It's a shit job because of the general entitlement of consumers, stemming from the whole "The costumer is always right" mantra that people take far too seriously and the policy of companies that enable that kind of behavior.

So I guess the best advice I can give you is try not to take anything at work personally. You're not an individual person anymore, you're now the face of Walgreens and will get dumped on because of the decisions of people thousands of miles away from you. Don't take it home with you, and if you can't help it, lean on that network of friends and family when you need to.

I wish you the best of luck.

Do what you're told. Don't come up with 'better' ways to do stuff or point out how inefficient some of the things are. Be perky and high energy. Speak in a friendly, clear and easily understood way, especially to your boss. Don't be in a big hurry to join up with the inevitable group of disgruntled coworkers. Don't start trying to screw around with your schedule right away. Be on time and don't clock in early or late. Don't make jokes about stealing.

These 2 posts are accurate to my retail experience.

You are paid to be a facilitator of transactions, especially as a cashier. If you are a cashier, you can be trusted with the till. That's a good thing.

Being an associate means shuffling around stock, cleaning bathroom, and/or dealing with disgruntled customers looking for goods.

Be polite, cordial, and helpful. Those 3 are the key to making it through. It helps to make friends with co-workers, but not too friendly.

Don't care. Go in, do the minimum amount of work possible to not get fired. Have no pride.

You are a disposable commodity. Do not put your physical safety at risk for some shit job.

Most customers are going to be completely benign.

That said, you will learn to hate coupon shoppers. They are the worst. Many seemingly have nothing better to do with their time than figure out how to save $0.07 on a box of cereal, or hair product. Be firm with them; they know that they are annoying, and they use it to their advantage. By being difficult, and unreasonable they want for you to fold, and acquiesce to their every demand. If you do fold to their demands, then they will seek you out every time that they come in, and waste all of your time.

Don't. If that coupon is expired, then it is expired. Period. If the coupon has a limit on it, then enforce it. The couponer will then realize that you will not play their game, and will avoid you the next time that they come in.

I work Geek Squad in the back of the precinct as an Advanced Repair Agent. I thank my lucky stars I have little to no interaction with customers. I just keep my head buried in computer screens all day.

It will motivate you to pursue other lines of work.

But seriously, just show up and do what you're told. It's not rocket science.

Don't go to work high.

Funny I look this thread up. Same thing for me since I got fired 3 months ago. Hopefully I don't have to stay here long and hear back from Jetblue or Fleetlogix so I don't have to stay here long.

I started today too man. So far I've only done those computer tests with instructions how to work online.

Wahh you got computer tests? I got to shadow for like 30 minutes and then got thrown to the wolves.

I must have gotten supremely lucky, because the Target where I worked had none of these problems. These jobs aren't great, but they're not nearly as soul-destroying as you all make them out to be.
