Any gaffers actually EXCITED for Kinect?

My stance on the Kinect has quickly changed from "adamant" to "excited." I'll be dropping by Best Buy today to pre-order my Kinect unit. Dance Central and JoyRide are the only two games I can afford on top of the unit. Adventures, JoyRide, and Dance Central should be more than enough for some fun with friends! :D

Joyride in the video looked better than I remember it at PAX. I was going to try it out there, but watching people play it just made me think the game was terrible so I got out of line. I really hope they do a good job of pumping out demos for all of these titles at launch.

Damn, watching the video now. Looks really good. :lol

Kinectimals looks so beautiful. Looks way more in-depth than I initially thought :D

Edit: Black Panther! Day 1!!

Wow.

Kinect JoyRide is back on my radar. :D
kinect joyride handles much, much worse than mario kart wii and doesn't have a fragment of its (limited) depth. played with a controller, it'd be a neanderthal attempt at an already stale genre which brings zero new ideas to the table except to dump any competitive combat mechanics, entirely to its detriment. with kinect, it's this, but with a gaping, laggy disconnect between the controls and the spastic (read: squirrelly) movements of your car.

(this is coming from someone who considers mkwii the worst in the franchise and not really worth buying.)

Xbox 360's Kinect Will Be 'Big Winner' This Holiday, says Market Researcher Ipsos
Using its proprietary research from the Vantis Files, market research company Ipsos today said that Microsoft's Kinect camera is poised to be the "big winner" among tech products this holiday shopping season. The research tested consumer responses to Kinect and Sony's PlayStation Move and found that Kinect has the advantage.

"Results reveal it will be a close fight between the Sony PlayStation Move and Xbox Kinect. Despite a significant difference in usage method, a similar number of respondents claimed that they definitely or probably would buy either platform. Kinect wins on two important dimensions that are predictive of market success: uniqueness and believability. Given a new usage experience, one might expect some level of skepticism among respondents for Kinect. Surprisingly, though, Kinect excels on both uniqueness and believability vs. other tech products in the Vantis database. PS Move is rather weak on both dimensions," Ipsos stated. "While there are a lot of factors other than consumer appeal that influence demand, the underlying potential for Xbox Kinect looks very good."

Furthermore, Ipsos tried out two different communication methods with consumers and found that Microsoft's simplified marketing message of "no controller required" is definitely a smarter strategy than communicating a multitude of features about Kinect and its technology.

Ipsos continued, "Microsoft's Kinect offers several features such as voice commands, hand gestures and the ability to communicate with friends and family. Vantis tested two ways to serve up all these benefits. The key for Microsoft is to remain focused on the primary differentiating aspect of Kinect, i.e., 'no controller required'. Needlessly adding more messages around features and applications may result in the dilution of the critical consumer communication. This dilution is magnified to the point that the Buzz Power for Kinect drops from an impressive top 20 percentile to a dismal below average. The strength of Kinect lies in its simplicity of use."
That chart :lol

then i doubt anyone here is really going to take your opinion on kart racing seriously.

no offence.

My fiance saw the commercial a couple of days ago and was immediately asking if we were getting it. So I guess we are getting it, lol.

Interesting findings above. Should make for a very interesting holiday. More so than has been in quite some time really.

The Gamestop editors are hilariously bad at Dance Central (and dancing in general).

I'm surprised there's no "fail out" mode like in GH/RB, would be super embarrassing for this kind of game.

is that confirmed? you can't fail out of 2 player vs guitar stuff in the rock band games either.

tell me all the things you liked about mario kart wii (which was not a bad game). i can guarantee that kinect joyride has none of them.

it's truly, wretchedly awful. leave it to die on a 7/11 shovelware tree where it belongs.

I have Dance Central preordered with my Kinect/250GB 360 bundle at GS. Thinking about just picking up the games at Target since they're doing a B2G1 free on all games. Dance Central and maybe Kinect Sports and a non kinect game. I haven't seen the Gamespot video (can't at work), does Kinect Sports look like the superior Sports title? And really? Kinectimals? I'll have to check it out later...

EDIT: is anyone going to make a Dance Central OT? If not, I will try to make one tomorrow....

My brother in law was all set to buy one of these for his family, but I think he got cold feet after watching the Major Nelson video about what kind of setup you have to have. I think he's concerned about being able to mount the camera on top of the TV which they said was optimal, or having enough room and even lighting.

tell me why you think mario kart wii wasn't worth buying.

i'm not planning on buying Joy Ride. gamestop and now destructoid have both complemented the controls in it based off the final version.

you say it's laggy and spastic.

now, tell me why i should value your opinion over those other two? what experience do you have with the final version of the game?

there really wasn't much kinect sports in that video.

kinect sports definately looks much better than wii sports.

better than wii sports resort? that's going to require hands on time.

looks to have a good variety of sports and minigames based on them though, and looks to control well too.

Above or below the TV is optimal. Between 2 and 6 feet is the recommendation for camera height. I wouldn't worry too much about uneven lighting, that video was describing the best possible set-up imaginable. As long as he doesn't have, say, a dark room with a floodlight in the corner or something, it should be fine. We'll have to wait until launch to truly see how well it performs in different environments, but it seems pretty flexible to me.

OK well maybe I'll gently encourage him then (partly because I want to try it!).

Well, I meant compared to the other Kinect sports games coming out that day. I think Deca Sports and something else comes out the same day. But they probably didn't cover those games. Thanks though.

The presentation of those Kinect games is really above the other motion games imho. Really nice looking.

I noticed that too.... they all seem to have a similar look (which is a good thing imo)..... seem to be more consistent than the move launch lineup (move had a few really good one and a bunch of really crappy ones). We will see how some of the lower profile 3rd party kinect games fare though.

Deca Sports looks like absolute garbage, and the Metacritic scores for the Deca Wii games say it all. Ubisofts Motion Sports at times looks better than I was expecting (Skiing), but really Kinect Sports is the one to get if you want a good sports/party game. Rare, for obvious reasons, really know the tech well and it's the most responsive looking game, in my opinion, and it has quite a lot of content and party modes.

the games look better and more interesting than I expected.

Dance Central for me, Kinectimals for the kids.

Kinect Sports & Your Shape Fitness Evolved are worth considering, too.

Why do the big cats on Kinectmals act like they were dogs?
It's cute and everything but... they mostly do dog stuff.

Kinect |OT| The Minority Report

I think we'll be sticking with the tag-line 'You Are The Controller' title. A joke will end up inviting unwanted visitors and a possible mod change to something less encouraging.

Dance Central is going to be one of the most tiring party games ever. :lol If people get bored of the serious fitness games, I think DC will be the best alternative to go for.

That's what I thought. Don't feed the trolls/haters.

You answered your own question. A ferocious big cat isn't something you want in a kids game.
Yeah but it's stupid. If you want to make a dog game, make a dog game. It's not like we don't know this is a Nintendogs with lions and cheetahs.

Making a Dog game is just asking for Nintendo to start knocking on the MS lawyers front door. At least they can fire in lions and stuff, maybe even add some bears, various salmon and other mythical creatures.

Just no boring old dogs!

This is MS here. Not the kiddie Nintendo with puppies.

Kinectimals is ferociously and dangerously cute.

and btw cats > dogs, if they really wanted to copy Nintendogs they would have done a game with wolves
