Any Jazz listeners in GAF?

On the topic of 2013 albums, Colin Stetson's New History Warfare, Vol. 3 is unbelievable. There isn't a single album I've heard all year that has pushed the envelop so hard. It's up on Spotify if you want to give it a listen. For sampling, I recommend "Hunted" and "Brute". If there are any punk/metal listeners here as well, you'll probably dig these songs.

One late night on youtube I stumbled upon a Japanese Jazz album that was amazing. When I googled the guy I found out he only made one album. I didn't write down his name either (I was drunk). All I remember it had a red cover with his face on it and yellow lettering down the sides. One day I will find it.

Ryo Fukui?

Now I have to listen to this. I have this obsession with listening to Japanese jazz musicians in hopes that I'll find that sound I'm looking for...never really find it but there's always great stuff to come across.

Google Images suggest that Ryo Fukui's Scenery is the album you've been looking for. Red album with his face on the cover.

I was about to ask about 2013 albums, thanks for this. Any more?

I'd like to add Marc Ribot Ceramic Dog's "Your Turn" album.

There is a pretty insane cover of Dave Brubeck's Take 5. There's more of a punk rock edge to it. Sample the full album off Pandora.

Some of the tracks:
Special Snowflake
Ritual Slaughter
Prayer
Your Turn

Not gonna lie, jazz blogs are one of my favorite things. They're basically the only people saving hundreds upon hundreds of obscurities from disappearing completely; legality aside (the vast majority of posts have been out of print for decades and never saw release beyond a small run or two on vinyl) I've heard so many insanely awesome '60s and '70s albums because of these sites.

With modern jazz, I tend to gravitate towards something safe and piano-centric. Brad Mehldau is my go-to guy. ECM is always cool. It's kind of intense trying to keep up with jazz as a whole along with my other musical interests, so the bulk of my listening ends up being when places like NPR or White Noise of Everyday Life post their year-end lists.

I appreciate Jazz as an art form and recognise just how good some of these musicians are, but it's not something I listen to much. I much prefer things like Jazz fusion as opposed to straight up Jazz as it tends to be more melodic and easier to listen to.

I don't have a strong aversion to it either though if something is presented to me.

An example of some good Jazz fusion I like would be musicians like Jeff Beck.

You gotta go to a jazz club and experience it live. Take in the moments, the ambiance, the mood. Then you'll know.

Yeah. I would probably enjoy it.

As I said, I don't hate it, I just find it hard to listen to sometimes. It's a bit too much for me to listen to and just chill. It also depends on the song.

Yeah I just started getting into it this summer. I'd been into the more psychedelic side of it, like the fusion stuff, for awhile, but recently I've been listening to the modal stuff. I'm a keyboardist, so Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, and Jimmy Smith have gotten a good amount of play from me.

It's definitely music that has taken some time for me to appreciate.

Metheny fans should check out this year's Tap - Book of Angels Vol 20 (part of John Zorn's series). One of my favorite jazz records of the year.

Gotta admit Iv'e never owned or really listened to a Jazz record but my neighbour listens to Jazz a lot.

There's certainly worse things to come drifting through your window on a Saturday afternoon :)
