Any new PS4 OS Update Details?

That's not true. Who made the PS4 OS?

AT&T? ;)

Seriously though, I can understand why people are expecting more since we can look at the updates the PS3 had in the first four months, but the PS3 had a lot of major issues that needed addressing asap. On the other hand, people got tired of the constant updates, so Sony's trying to make it so there's no more than one a month. Which makes it more frustrating when there's a minor update that adds nothing, since we know it'll probably be a month before there's an actual feature added.

On the plus side, something like mp3 and DLNA would probably be added as an app, so it'll probably just show up in the store one day.
One day after their agreement with Sony Music expires, that is.

They said they're adding mp3 and DLNA support.
Yup, it's needed for the HTML5 APIs to support DLNA CVP2.

PS4 and PS3 will be supporting this

From Jethead, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and WiiU are all getting DLNA CVP2 support.

W3C HTML 5 and Web TV (DLNA CVP 2). Since CVP 2 is a Javascript application it needs APIs to control the following: Home Networking Task Force Teleconference 02 Aug 2011

Cable Labs Reference Implementation and Web site here for Linux and Windows will align with DLNA CVP2 and includes:

Java (For XTV applications and more)
GLib – utility library. (makes it a Gnome stack)
Gstreamer / HDHomerun / VLC– tuner control. => HDHomerun Mentioned in the 4/2010 Xbox 720 powerpoint.
GStreamer – media decoding and presentation.
wxWidgets – user interface. (Javascript engine GTK in the near future again Gnome)
Net-SNMP – Master Agent.

@ androvsky & massa The above is why I kept thinking Gstreamer would be in the PS3 as the player. Also the PS4 has a webGL Browser desktop UI. It has to because it is designed to be a Media Hub that is remote desktop (HTML5) viewed (RVU) and controlled by other CE platforms.

Not sure why the need to compare Sony's approach to MS exists to be honest.
MS' console requires these regular updates to implement BASIC features that should have been here from day one, features the PS4 has had since day one. As a result MS HAVE to be proactive about it.
The things Sony needs to add are also things that MS needs to add too and these are big items, items that MS also has not announced a time frame for.

Cool your jets people. Seriously.

In other news Aony take to GDC tonight. Expect something maybe?

Suspend/Resume, organization for your games, and MP3/DLNA playback aren't basic features?

Last I checked, my PS4 plays PS4 games. Mission accomplished.

Mission is not accomplished. This is not the PS2 where a bare bones console that only play games can fly. Its competitor is far more proactive in delivering the features that can touch base for a variety of consumers. Sony needs to get with the program.

Day 123 -

Another day and still no news.

The isolation is getting to me. I hear the rumblings of rumors in the dark, they are whispering to me. "DLNA! MP3!" They say. I can feel the pulsating blue of the LED and have to close my eyes to shield myself from the intense glare of the DS4 light. It is maddening.

Why does the great Sony not keep me informed, my torment is real. My demise is imminent if I do not hear about features.

No time...no time for games, only features.

Yours truly,

Isolated in PS4 Limbo

Haha this is great

First of all, it's a faster sleeker OS. They had streaming and remote play on day one, a working party system on day one, most of the major streaming apps on day one, and no show stopping bugs on day one. Sony did a great job.

Should Sony be more communicative? Sure. Is it a big deal that there hasn't been a major feature update yet? No. It's nice that MS got an update out, but considering they had more broken and missing features at launch, they desperately needed to. They still have a ton of work to do.

We don't want a buggy firmware update. We want a good firmware update. XB1 has had several despite releasing at the same time. Both systems need so many fixes/features and XB1 is actually getting some of theirs.
Thing is, Xbone was behind PS4 in some aspects, screwed up some features and was lacking some basic settings/features, they kind of had to do their best to at least get some big stuff like Twitch & even some basic settings stuff out because they probably wanted system parity with stuff like Twitch and didn't want to get shit from lacking some basic settings/features. PS4 was a bit more functional from the start and other than MP3 support & DLNA, there hasn't been any too big & glaring omissions, so they haven't been rushing stuff out.

That said, yes, Sony needs to start releasing bigger updates soon. It makes them look bad when Xbone has monthly big-ish updates, even if they've partly been features PS4 already has, and they put out a "stability update" for the fourth time in a row.

For a games console? No.

Suspend resume was one of songs biggest touted features at the unveil. It was one of the main things that I actually thought. "wow. That's next gen" o's wise it seemed awesome. Then they don't even have it working. The ps4 is an awesome games machine but I dunno man. It does feel like Sony are slacking here

Welcome new sony fans. They are slow as fuck.
I liked your old tag. But, yeah. This is the way Sony rolls. One update a month and most of it is going to a Stability Update™./

That's not to say that Sony doesn't do updates but MS has always made a huge deal about them and is super transparent about every little thing in them. Sony isn't going to tell you when the console detects NAT Types more efficiently, it's going to tell you when you can dim your controller, maybe. Honestly, I would rather an update that fix the memory leak esque things that happen whenever I'm browsing screenshots. And an update that makes the app list stop shuffling around. And how about the thing that happens where my PS4 refuses to go into Standby? Hell, top priority needs to be stopping those damned 7GB updates because the Patch System makes you download all of the previous updates along with the most recent one every time.

I want the things that are there to work before there are new things. Stability, stability, stability. Until I can go from Patch A to Patch B without a single crash that loses me my spot in a game, I want more stability. At least until E3, I mean. At least nobody here is doing that whole "Why is it less functional than the PS3?" shtick. We already covered that in the last thread, which I will link here.

Delivering features, how about delivering the console first!?

Proactive is a funny word for me, since i live in a Tier 2 country and have to wait 10 months to even have a chance to buy a Xbox One

Rather wait for a OS update than wait for the whole console

Sonys slow. And I'm not expecting them to really speed up this generation on the os side. That said, as long as they get some of the basic stuff I'll be happy.

Sony's a hardware company, guys, not a software company.

That would have been acceptable last gen but this gen there's no excuse. Sony knows what people use on their systems even if they say they didn't think about MP3 or DLNA. They need to be a bit more transparent with what updates they plan on releasing because it's getting to the point where users are having doubts as to if it's ever coming!

MS just announced a time frame for friend notifications. That is absolutely a major feature.

It would be nice if they would release more substantial updates.

I mean compare these two lists

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_4_system_software

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_One_system_software

The XB1 has had much more in depth updates.

Nothing much changed really, actually they seem to be updating things at near enough the same pace as the PS3.

Hopeful MP3 and DLNA will pop up about May as well.

Sony and firmware updates don't go well together in my experience.

Many people are very impatient. It takes a lot of time and work to ensure that software is good quality and wont break anything else. Yes, I know it has been a whole 5 months without new features, but I guarantee you there is a team at Sony working on it. I am only saying this because I write software as well and many time people have unrealistic expectations about software timelines.

But some of the minor stuff surely shouldn't take so long. Look at what MS has put out in the same time frame. At the very least some open communication with expected time lines would be great.

I'm wondering at this point if they're maybe going to hold off until E3 or something with any major update in attempt to make some sort of "event" out of it or something. I really would have thought suspend/resume would have been ready by now.

For me, the system as it is is fine for now I guess, but I really really want some sorting options and my goddamn MP3/DIVX support already.

Aside from friend notifications and a better way to organise the main tiles, is there much else the PS4 OS really needs to require such regular updates?

The Xbox One really NEEDED all the stuff it's been getting, especially coming from the 360. Aside from the above, I personally didn't think the PS4 needed much else.

I'm sure there's something I'm not thinking of though.

Personally I'm fine with the current state of the OS on PS4 just for gaming in general....

However I would appreciate if they made a bunch of nice minor tweaks and additions to the overall experience (Download queue, better game update detection, sortable trophies etc)

I expect them roll out features soon (with at least 1-2 big updates between now and E3)

Do you want them to rush new features and leaving them in a semi-usable state (like the XB1's party system?) or do you want new features that work like they are supposed to and not have you yelling at your TV "Who thought this was OK to implement this feature in it's current state"

There is a serious lack of features on:
- Suspend feature
- Media/Blu-ray playback
- File organization
- Shitty photo/video upload support (facebook lol)

This is what so many people are bitching about.

Really? No Blu-Ray at launch? Not that I care about non-game type media on a gaming machine, it is convenient. Juggling 4 remotes and 4 different media players can be annoying.

I can guarantee in the next 2-3 years those will be fixed. That's my guarantee.

Open communication I can agree with! Sony has always been pretty bad about communication...

err you can play blu-rays. he's probably talking about stuff like 3d support.

"My torment is real", hahaha!

I think they should just prioritize background colours/images as that would clam up a lot of the vocal audience ;) and that is an easy feature to implement.

These were the top 5 votes from my Rank Your Most Wanted PS4 Firmware Features thread, in order of most- to least-requested (there are more in the thread):

1. Suspend/Resume from Standby

2. Media playback of files (via USB/HDD, JPEG/MPEG container support; would include Custom Soundtracks here as games already support it)

3. UI customization options (background color/image, display preferences)

4. Custom folders / "pinning" UI tiles

5. Expanded support for Sharing (save to HDD, save video to other services, uncompressed screenshot support)

Notice that 3 and 4 are basically "let me rearrange crap like I want and attach my waifu to background image".

I think filtering will definitely come first. It's a no brainer. And they should implement it as a system wide thing so that most list structures inherit this control. So you can sort or 'float' the criteria you want to the left (maybe ghosting things to the right; there's a few ways to do it).

I do not agree with that mockup UI pic that will probably get posted here at some point, as it is just the XMB rotated 90º, with the PS4 tiles in place. It doesn't work for the 3-layer metaphor as there would be no room to 'drill down' to each game like it is now (which i think is great).

But if they release a big update with the promised Suspend/Resume from Standby, some light UI customization, media playback and DLNA... that would go a long way. Of course they need to shore up a couple of ligitimately missing pieces too, like 3D blu-ray, download priority etc.
