Any news about Silicon Knights?

They're going to spend 3-5 years silently making their next game in a vacuum, but then instead of actually releasing it when it's done, they'll hide it away and continue accumulating interest and building debt in order to spend another 3-5 years releasing phony "in progress" screenshots that paint SK in a perfect light, until they finally decide to release what has become a technologically obsolete game on a console that may have died as many as ten years previously.

They call this the Duke Stratagem.

Deep into that darkness peering
Long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting...

Well, if you know then tell us what it means. Because I don't know what an "affiliated company with an equity method applied" means...
Nintendo made up the term "second party" when they bought a stake in Rare and gave them DKC.
Second party is meaningless and actually refers to the user.

"Affiliated company with equity method applied" is Nintendo's legal-ish way to describe what they see as a second party, which is to say that they hooked them up with an exclusivity contract, and they bought a (non-controlling) chunk of the company's stock. If Nintendo bought 51% control over the company, they'd be a "consolidated subsidiary".

Affiliated company = exclusive
Equity method applied = part owner
Consolidated subsidiary = full owner

SK stopped being a second party a long time ago, because Nintendo released them from the exclusivity contract. They're not an "affiliated company" anymore. But Nintendo didn't ditch their stock, so they still have the "equity method applied". Unless SK signed a new exclusivity contract with Nintendo.

It was 26 people - and it wasn't even confirmed to be a permanent layoff. A lot of companies were laying employees off back then.

I honestly don't think there's anything to worry about here.

They were at 185 employees on August 8, 2008 (~ 3:40 in this video) and now they're down to 120 according to their website. That's 1/3rd of the studio, seems like a significant downsizing to me.

That's it - probably. Nintendo still lists them as an affiliated company though.

Dyack decided to go head to head with GAF and we were the ones to emerge victorious.

Which begs the question....what did we win? There must be some spoils of war.

Dyack is loaded, I bet he's got loads of nice stuff just lying around.

Somone find out where he lives on Google Maps and we'll go and ransack the place.

At worst we'll get some really nice books and loads and loads of unused artwork for Too Human 2.

Anyone know when the lawsuit hearings take places? There's just no way they could have built an engine. There's going to be pages and pages of code exactly the same as UE3 that they're not quite what it does.

You know your Eternal Darkness, kudos.

I agree, I want to see that play out.

I am talking about their recent annual report, which was released four years after the termination of their agreement.
Yeah, you're right. SK clearly broke away from Nintendo in 2004, but Nintendo's reports for 2005, 2006, (2007 doesn't seem to list the same kinds of stuff), and 2008 all show no change at all in SK's status compared to the years before, even though other companies have updated and shifted from one column to another.

Maybe Nintendo just plain forgot that SK ever existed? They never got the memo when SK left, so they didn't update their files? :lol

I wonder if TOSE puts "Developers of Dragon Quest" on their website or Paon puts "Developers of Donkey Kong" on theirs.

From what I heard, TOSE is very secrative and doesn't put the company out there for the public to see. They just want to work on many different projects as possible.

All according to keikaku.

Any news about Silicon Knights?
they released too human. it wasn't as good as dyack made it out to be. silence ever since.

edit: oh yeah, dyack also got banned from neogaf. if he's not on neogaf, he doesn't exist.

I just want to hear Dyack spout off some of his crazy opinions on a podcast somewhere. Need some good laughs. That episode of 1UP Yours when they were going to interview him, but then he came in and went off for the whole thing was epic. :lol

would anyone care about SK if Matt from IGN hadn't hyped every interview with them to hell. It was like IGN finally had a credible relationship with a developer and they never shut up about it. Matt acted like a retard with a candy bar. If only I could re-post his blog post "WHAT I LOVE ABOUT TOO HUMAN"...#1 ROBOT TREES!!

Five Reasons I Will Buy Too Human

I present to you today five reasons why I will absolutely buy Too Human when it is released on Xbox 360 later this year
LOL this was written in April of 2006!!!

1. Trees Made Out of Electrical Wires
2. Giant Enviroments
3. Dinosaur Bones in Water
4. Menacing Evil Guys
5. Forest That I want to Live in.

I think this may be the worst thing written on IGN...it's stuck with me for all these years.

Still have to finish Too Human, but i think it will turn out to have a cliffhanger ending and no sequel planned.

You have no idea. The very last scene makes me want TH2.

Last I heard was that THQ was talking to Silicon Knights about one of their projects, that's been a good three to four months ago. I'm not really sure what will happen now THQ has gone and laid off people and restructured themselves.

Probably, because I don't think most people get excited about stuff because of.... IGN of all places. :P

I was a huge fan of SK because of Dark Legions, Legacy of Kain and Eternal Darkness. Twin Snakes was a pretty lazy-ass port-up and Too Human is just hilarious. Can't say I'm a fan anymore, especially not after all the drama that Dyack intentionally brought here while trying to drum up hype for his underwhelming game. :P

I liked Eternal Darkness as much as the next guy, but that's about it. They some how made Metal Gear Solid boring..which is probably the worst offense ever. Too Human is the worst game I've played this gen.

In last weekend's Globe & Mail there was a FULL PAGE head shot of Dennis Dyack (literally the entire page) split with a character face from Too Human. It was an advertisement for Brock University.

Edit: found it (obviously it was much, much bigger in the advertisement).

It's funny though, because Too Human as it was originally conceived, is such a fucking appealing concept to me. Too bad they dropped that and went in the direction of a mediocre Cyber-Norse "trilogy" action RPG which turned into a poor poor man's Diablo.

Originally Too Human was announced as a 4 CD PS1 adventure game set in a Blade Runner-ish futuristic city. You would play the role of a special agent doing missions and stuff in third person ala MGS, while the main character would narrate monologues as you played similar to Legacy of Kain. The idea for "Too Human" as a title came from how the main character would have the option of adding cybernetic implants to aid his abilities throughout the game, and in the process while making the game easier he would lose parts of his humanity. Sad that they never got to complete and release that game. :(

Eh, fuck the haters. Twin Snakes was more than worth the price of admission besides its flaws, and Eternal Darkness was fantastic. Two out of three is more than enough for me to want to see what they have next, especially since Too Human wasn't the "OMGZ WORST GAME EVA!" bullshit anti-hype that GAF loves to conjure.

Still waiting for Cyber Empires 2.

Seriously, that game was pure awesome, and the market is ready for another stompy mech game. Especially one as unique as Cyber Empires.

Well, the cutscenes wouldn't be as great as Kojima Productions' efforts, but it's a safe bet that the story would, you know, not be complete shit.

Actually, not true.

First of all, the new cutscenes were over the top, laughably bad, shit.

Secondly, the new cutscenes were something that Kojima wanted to put into the remake. The original set of cutscenes were pretty much like the original set, but Kojima wanted something different (bad).

Eternal Darkness really should get top billing whenever Silicon Knights is mentioned. And Too Human is one of the few games that I will label as utter shit... probably because unlike other games that are shit, this one has had 10 years of development time and is pretentious as hell.

Matt was a huge mark for SK and Too Human, but that article is clearly tongue-in-cheek.

I don't think we'll hear anything from SK. If the did manage to get a company to help fund their next game I'm sure a gag order was written into the agreement.

This was still being used as a selling point for Too Human 360. The problem lies in that this deep concept was nothing more than a simple menu with a one time choice of Human or Cyber path in the game. It had no impact on the story, for the first game at least. The only difference was the alignment tree. Had they actually touched upon this more in TH people might actually have cared for Baldr.

There is currently litigation involving Epic regarding the use of the unreal 3 engine. You will not hear much until that is settled. Part of the dispute revolves around the amount of unreal code (or technology) that remains in the too human engine.

...
By that you mean a company that Nintendo took from obscurity, made great, and then which left Nintendo to create HD games that were more ambitious than they were capable of developing, and now are potentially not in business any longer?

I loved the games these companies made last gen, and I was disappointed to see them fail to deliver the same quality on the HD systems. I hope that SK doesn't go the way of F5, and I similarly hope that F5 actually has some development capabilities left.

Nintendo: These companies are/were a big lure for core gamers. Your 2nd party strategy was a good idea in the N64/GC eras, and it's THE answer to your problem attracting core gamers!

They laid off a bunch of people late last year. And the lead designer on Too Human left SK and went to Microsoft recently.

I would imagine their game with Sega was canned, it's been over four years since it was announced and not a thing has been shown of it.
I can confirm that Henry Sterchi ( Director of Design at SK) left and landed at Microsoft.

As far as the Sega project, I'm sure it is canned. It has gone way too long, Sega hasn't said a word about it, and Sega isn't in the greatest of shapes with outside development (Aliens games...)
