So I finished my 3rd session on my 3/4 sleeve on monday and everything is healing as expected..except for my elbow bend and it's bothering the hell out of me. Thoughts on the pic?

not dry at all. I use a light coat of A&D lotion every 2-3 hours for the first 3 days. I used to lather my first tattoo with the ointment and it ended up ruining it.
I'm not saying to slather it on but its clearly still an open wound. Did you stop the A&D already?

You're cleaning off the ointment between applications right? Not just adding fresh ointment on top of the previous coat?

That's a part that will take more time to heal just because of the location. You're constantly moving your arm and the skin is shifting and folding so it'll just take more time.

It will also be where the tattoo will fade more in the coming years. Again, due to where it is located.

No, today is my last day on it and then I'll go with Aveeno lotion.

Here is the rest of my piece.

The hannya mask is about a month old using the same technique.

From my own experience, I would keep using the A&D at least a couple more days. It's clearly still healing.

DO NOT USE A&D.

PLEASE stop using A&D for tattoos. You should only use Aquaphor.

This is true. A and D acts like a barrier and in the end, won't allow ogyen to get at your tattoo, which is needed for healing.

what's the difference? They're both petroleum based

It's like how everyone says "humans only use 10% of their brains" which has been proven to be untrue.

So many people think that A&D is good for tattoos, but it's not. Your tattoo isn't getting the oxygen it needs and it's not going to heal the best way that it can.

You should exclusively use a thin layer of Aquaphor and make sure to wash it frequently with gentle foaming soap.

Ah, I see. Can you let us know what his advice was? Btw, your tattoo looks awesome. I'm scheduled for my first tattoo next month.

thanks! The black work was around 6 hrs with breaks. Mask was around 5 and the outline 3 or so. It's long and expensive lol. What are you getting?

For something that will be permanently on your body, you really do not want to skimp out on paying a good artist haha. Well, at least that's how I see it.

I'm getting something geometrical on my upper arm next month.

That's how it should be. I think a rule of thumb is that if your tattoo costs less than $100 (barring a tiny little heart tattoo or something like that) then you're probably at a shady place with a crumby artist.

Use Yelp to help find artists.

Yeah, find artists you like and check out their portfolio and work. Instagram is also very useful to find studios and artists and their latest works.

I have a tattoo that I got when I was 18 that's getting covered up. If i had to it all over again, I would never get a tattoo before i turned 21 lol. Here are the rest of the pics

Final session will be on the 24th of this month. And you can see the shitty dragon I'm covering up

I used Vaseline on my Tattoos, and never had any scabbing. I kept it extremely moist though, and wrapped in cling film.

I'll drop by walgreens at lunch and give it a try

Looks great man!

Wait, I thought you should not wrap your tattoo in film again after the 2/3 hours after it's done?

I had similar issues with my sleeve. Also my elbow which refused to hold color so it's been an ugly faded blur since I got it.

The "wounds need oxygen to heal" thing is a myth too.

Wounds heal best when completely sealed and kept free of external contaminates. I used to think the oxygen thing too until I looked it up one day and doctors were dismissing it and recommending to keep a wound covered or sealed.

The only issue you could run into with over sealing or compressing a fresh tattoo would be coagulationand bits of plasma building up but it's better than it drying out and/or scarring.

I've been getting tattoos for 15 years and every single time I used A&D and kept it covered for a few hours afterwards. Every single one (13 different sessions) turned out fine.

I'll have to try A&D next time. I feel like everyone I know is polarized between that and Aquaphor (my ex wife being an Aquaphor person) but I hear some tattoo artists recommend A&D instead.

She took the Aquaphor when we split up so I'll have to buy new stuff anyway.

Got 2 colorfull Zelda related tattoo's planning for one more and they turned out fine with A&D ointment just use a small layer.

With one of my tattoo's i used too much wich clogged up my pires andcaused red bumps called my artist and sorted that one out, still healed fine.

You have your tat over a bendable/moving place so it might be normal.
Just give your parlor a call or visit them they are experts they will know what to do.

Also most artists will give a free touch up after 1-2 months if anything causes severe fading of lines or color(slight fading is normal as the top skin layer is replaced) or patches where the color is entirely gone. Those will be fixed.

Everyones skin is different and that's why different things work for healing so don't worry too much just get in touch with them talk about your concerns and once it is healed if it needs a touch up then don't worry they will fix it.

Also small tip (got this one from my artist i asked him how to keep tats nice for a long while) for if you are planning to do things in the sun during summer season put sunscreen on your tattoo if it is exposed to the sun. The sun is the no 1 reason of the severe fading of colorfull tattoo's.

Beautful tat by the way.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. This is my first tattoo that's going to be exposed to the sun. I have a baseball game that I'm gonna watch today and a food truck festival on saturday. Should I just go with the sun screen or play it safe and wear long sleeves?

Aquaphor is always my go to, and only when I'm in the scabby/peeling phase of healing. You don't want to over do it with any of these ointments, the tattoo needs to be able to breathe so it can heal properly.

In terms of your bruising, I wouldn't worry too much. Tattooing is traumatic to your body and skin and that part of your arm is particularly sensitive. I don't have anything in my elbow (yet), but every time I've had something done towards the inner part of my upper arm or bicep I've experienced similar bruising. I bruise easily in general, so at this point I've accepted it as part of the whole ordeal. It looks worse than it is and it goes away after a few days. None of the tattoos have been any worse for wear because of it, its just part of the body's healing process. If it's painful or persists for more than a couple weeks, then I'd be concerned, but it looks like its healing beautifully aside from the bruises (no scabbing or infected looking areas from what I can see).

Beautiful tattoo, be sure to posts pics when it's done!
