Anybody else think Planetside 2 could be a major PS4 killer app?

Oh that's not going to be a problem anymore for PS4.

Especially since it's Sony's own game.
They've confirmed that developers won't have to go through this on PS4, and the game is first party. They're also developing the PS4 version concurrently with updates they'er adding to the PC version.

I understand they streamlined a lot of their processes but the update disparity reason was given by PS2's own creative director so it seems it is still enough of an issue for them not to go through with cross-play. Here's hoping they leave it as an option though. I wouldn't mind waiting a few days here and there for the PS4 version to be brought up to date with PC.

Never played it,but it sure does look pretty good! And 2000 multiplayer is probably the biggest nextgen upgrade out of all the games for consoles.

I think it will have solid numbers at launch, but will eventually fade into a small but dedicated fanbase.

I know I'll definitely be playing it.

All the funneling of action into tighter spaces that they have been doing kind of makes sense now in a console context.

The reception will probably be "wow this is something new" followed by a steep dropoff from there as the next big things come out, it will probably maintain a niche following though.

Is this game easier to get into than Dust514? I tried that on PS3 demo and I truly had no idea what the fuck I was doing or even what I was supposed to be doing.

Whoa, have they? I thought I remembered something where they specifically mentioned that PS4 updates for PS2 would lag a bit because of certification. Megaton if true and it affects all devs, not just first party.

Dead on arrival.

f2p and free for anyone regardless of PS+, I've been telling many people about it. Even the ones who aren't planning on getting plus. It's a pretty fun game that really isn't even in abundance on consoles.

Killer app though? No. It doesn't really need to be though.

It is so easy to TK. How would you even report one person out of hundreds? Then the whole fourth fraction.

I also don't see it going well without a keyboard and mouse.

Hope it makes launch as I really am struggling to give a shit about any of the other launch titles (killzzzzzone, knackered premise and Not Forza club, lol I'm so witty)

It would be shit as a launch title. It needs to come out when there are lots of PS4 owners. You do NOT want to play that game with only a handful of people on each continent. In fact, they might need to limit available continents at first to ensure proper player density.

I'm going to check out all the f2p stuff once I get my ps4 home on day one. Don't know anything about ps2 as I'm not a PC gamer but I will give it a whirl.

What's this game like? It's hard to tell from the quick cutting interview/gameplay clips I've seen from e3. It looks sort of like warhawk. Is that a wrong assumption?

But it is free and new owners don't have much to play.

It's definitely one of the reasons I'm picking up the system. I think if they'd market it and sell branded SOE point cards at launch, they could catch the eye of a few gamers.
That's putting controllers up against keyboards though.
I don't think this would matter very much. If anything, it'd put PS4 gamers at an advantage due to (hopefully) more stable framerates.

I've heard that comparison made before. I've played WH before and it's one of my all time favorite multiplayer games and I guess it does have some similarities as it's cross-action warfare with air, vehicles and infantry but in my opinion it's more like BF with more players and more customization.

It'll be the first thing in my download queue while playing KZ:SF on day one. Will it be a game changer? Probably not - but its definitely good for the PS4's portfolio.

That sounds awesome. I'm definitely trying this out then.

Read up on it. It's the sequel to what I thought was an amazing game at its time. MMOFPS with vehicles and small personal mech suits. 3 factions with different bonuses, vehicles, and weapons. Next gen graphics and no longer subscription based like Planetside 1.

No, it couldn't be. A "Killer App" is any program that encourages people to buy a platform specifically for that program. The encouragement to buy the platform comes from the exclusive nature of the program. So, Half-Life 2 was Steam's killer app, because everyone who wanted to play HL2 legally had to go through Steam.

Planetside 2 is available on PCs, and is likely to remain the "definitive version" throughout its life. PS2 on the Playstation 4 will be excellent, but it isn't going to convince thousands of Planetside 2 fans to buy a PS4 because they're already playing it on their PC.

I don't think so. Planetside is a very good game, but i don't think it has the clout or mainstream exposure to be considered a "killer app" (i could be wrong, this is my guess though). A great addition to the PS4 library though? absolutely

Sort of but FPS. There are 3 worlds, one is ice, one is desert and one is lush forests etc. They are creating a bunch more continents as well. You have 3 factions to choose from, then you have a bunch of classes. Each class can be upgraded through cert points and you can also upgrade weapons etc. The main draw is how there are 2000 people playing at once so its a huge ongoing battle. Its never 'game over, you win' or anything like that.

Its got vehicles, airplanes, infantry etc. Its just a huge war going on all the time and pretty damn fun especially for FREE.

So based on this, Titanfall isn't a killer app because it's available on PC.

I hope so. I know I'll be playing it as soon as it's out on PS4 with a bunch of my friends. The original Planetside was a total blast.

Not even close to a killer app Battlefield and COD will the fan base. The scraps left over will be for Killzone.

Yes and no. Titanfall is targeted at console owners. They are the game's primary audience. A lot of attention is being spent on the XBox version, with mentions of the PC being relegated to interviews and small print. If it were being sold as a PC, 360 and a XBone game it would not be a killer app since the PC/360 version would leech sales from the console version. Instead it's being marketed into a killer app.

We'll have to wait until the game releases to see for sure whether it will turn into one. I think it has a good chance since I didn't know it was going to be cross-gen and PC multiplat until I looked it up just now.

As said, the gunplay is the weakest part and might detract a lot of people who rather be on foot. The vehicular battles are something else though. No reason not to try the game out on PS4 if you don't have a capable PC.

Indies are actually pretty happy that they no longer have to wait for certification for patches, if I'm not wrong.

They really needed to make this cross play with the PC version, would've made the community so much bigger.

Though I can imagine what a QC nightmare it would be to let the PC and console community mingle in competitive play, a developer and Sony really ought to hammer out a framework to make this happen. I would expect more cross-platform experiences in the future in games with co-operative modes, to be honest. Portal 2 is an example (the only one I think?) of this from the current generation.

It will be interesting to see how it does. Being free to play and launch will get it onto a lot of PS4's. And the game is extremely pretty, even if I thought it was rather boring to play. Really wasn't a fan.

I hope it does well though. SoE has been making a pretty nice comeback lately and I'd like to see that continue.

It's as boring as you make it. Get into a solid outfit and you can get some nice tactical play going. Not being in an outfit can be extremely boring in this kind of game. But the lack of third party programs like teamspeak and forced reliance on in-game voice chat could be a detriment. I guess it depends on how robust our other voice chat options on the console are.

I think it'll do pretty well. I could see it being the go-to game for a lot of people who don't want to pay for PS+. It's free, and pretty easy to jump into and be shooting stuff with friends with little hassle.

Is this making it out in time for launch? If so, I think it could be huge. For those months following launch when no games are being released, a f2p game like this is just the perfect fit. This was a big get for Sony and I hope it pays off for them. Wii U could have definitely used something like this at launch.

It should be, because it's an absolutely fantastic game. I feel like it won't resonate with console-centric gamers though.
