Anybody else think Planetside 2 could be a major PS4 killer app?

Just tried this out using a 360 pad on my PC. It's not bad, but still massively prefer a keyboard and mouse setup. It should be good either way though, great game.

If Sony is smart, they'll have this ready by launch and Pre-installed on PS4's day 1. Once people realize they have a full on game with hundreds of players, they'll keep it installed and heck might even spend a few on the game.

Having good free to play games on launch would be a really cool thing to advertise.

Buy an PS4, and you can download and play these games for free! Console launches are expensive and being able to tell people they'll have 1 or 2, maybe more games to play free of charge could be powerful.

I doubt people would be overly happy about a rather large game being preinstalled and taking up space on their HDD without asking for it. Highlighting it as something you can "play now free!!" in the Playstation interface is a different story.

Also, is this scheduled for launch?

I was thinking the same thing, honestly.

A free to download, free to play first person shooter? That's very robust and fun even without splurging on IAP?

Shit would be a goldmine. They'd just need to re-do the UI from the ground up but people would play that shit non-stop on PS4.

Advertising this on the box as a "Free Game", or having it pre-installed would be really smart.
It would add additional perceived value to the console itself that more casual and younger gamers would probably be very receptive to.

I think It can be successful, but not a killer app. I think its too big in scope and not arcadey enough. A ftp game that is like an easier to play CS or like COD would be a killer app.

Yea, the biggest problem I had w/ PS2 was taking 10,20,30 minutes in-game to actually get into a good firefight.

I haven't played as much recently but if they took care of that I could see people getting into it.

Don't underestimate the power of "free". People are going to be spending 400-1000 dollars on launch day. A free game will definitely have the more budget conscious gamer interested.

it will most likely just be a small client preloaded into the games list/menu, and when you launch it, it asks you to login and then downloads all of the game files.

How many people even play the PC version anymore. I tried to play in April after a big patch and it was like a wasteland.

At launch the game had around 30k concurrent players on steam alone, now it's peaking at only 8k. I know steam isn't the only way to access the game but it's still not a good sign.

I think Everquest has much larger potential.

Played it on the PC way back and thought it was shit in the end. The low TTK might be a lot more suited to controllers though. Killer app? Highly doubt it.

It could kill Destiny on PS4, that's for sure. The MMO shooter community is a limited one. Having two of those games on the platform and one F2P - well guess which one will be more popular. I think Microsoft did it right in spreading the appeal of games. They have exclusive DLC for CoD, exclusive DLC for Battlefield 4 (might be the next CoD), full-on exclusive Titanfall (quite likely the next next CoD) and Destiny for the MMOs. Plus a new Halo. They literally destroy PS4 for the core multiplayer FPS crowd.

The games not going to be a launch title, so it won't be pre installed on the PS4, it's not out until 2014. I did see a TV ad for Planetside 2 today in the UK, on one of the sports channels though.

PS2 and Destiny are both first person shooters and are both online - those are the only similarities.

I can't imagine they'll care. It'll be a while before the space it takes up is the last bit of space available on the system (as in, it'll take gamers a while to accrue that data) by which time they've had ample opportunity to delete it.

10 gigs on a 500 gig drive at launch for a free game that is good, fun, and can be unistalled easily? Im sure the general public wont give a hoot. Installing it is a good idea.

\ They have exclusive DLC for CoD, exclusive DLC for Battlefield 4 (might be the next CoD), full-on exclusive Titanfall (quite likely the next next CoD)\.

COD = Timed DLC, not exclusive
BF4 = Timed DLC, not exclusive
Titanfall is likely a timed exclusive, but no one knows for sure. (lets not crown a game that doesn't exist the next king. BF is next in line for that I think,)

Before the Xbox 360 launched Microsoft actually did some keyboard vs controller tests with GFWL, and according to them, the players with controllers got absolutely destroyed every time. They were planning to have many more games be cross-play between Xbox and PC before they tested this out.

Yeah, I am sure people would be really mad at having a game taking 10GB of space on a 500GB HDD, especially if they didn't pay for it. I mean, who in their right mind would want to buy a console, go home and enjoy such an immersive multiplayer game without having to fork out a single penny?

Some gamers will complain but I think if the devs rework the game a bit for console gamers it might take off into a massive juggernaut. As someone mentioned before, it sometimes takes awhile to get into a firefight. If the devs could add a little something to speed up travel and add some other things to the game, they could shorten this and it would go over much better with the console audience.

PS2 will probably be better on PS4 is they ship the hardware with a headset
PC gamers don't talk so much

It is actually my most anticipated game on PS4
Hope they make the launch, it will be a great timesink

They have that, on the spawn screen / map there is an 'Instant Action" option , and it will spawn you very near to where a major donnybrook is happening :)

(Yea..I said donnybrook)

Then I see no reason (from what little I admittedly know) why it can't take off. The vids I've seen and the review I read make it seem like a quality title. I'm sure the addition of console gamers is only going to broaden the content.

PS2 is an amazing game with a next gen feel. If the get it running and looking great on day 1 for PS4 it will be huge.

Without BC, launch buyers will have small libraries. The 1-3 games most people buy at launch won't be enough. People will be downloading every demo and free game available until they have time and money to build their libraries.

If PS2 makes it to launch it has a great chance at success.
This is a very good point.

So I've started playing Planetside 2, thanks to this thread. To put it simply, it is absolutely mind blowing. The size of the maps, the amazing graphics (the night battles are jaw dropping with all the lighting effects, volumetric smoke lights, etc). and the number of players per maps make this a truly next gen experience.

The game runs perfectly fine at ultra settings 1080p on my i5 2500k coupled with a GTX480. I get a fairly smooth 30-50fps. the motion blur per camera per object is damn good in this, so the framerate actually feels better than it is.

I was wondering, with the whole "coding to the metal" business, surely the 7850 equivalent in the PS4 is more than enough to deliver performances similar to what II am currently experiencing on my PC, right?

I don't know why people are writing this off. Planetside 1 was an incredible time on PC. Console only gamers will love it, especially for the price.

It would seriously help if these free to play games came pre-installed on the PS4.

For all the posters saying "lol no" and "dead on arrival", could you elaborate a bit on why you think that?

On the subject of its 'jump in and play' potential, I was originally turned off of Planetside because I figured I'd need to slave myself to an outfit that required me to follow orders or show up at specific times regularly. WoW basically burned out all desire I had to do that again, ever.

Yet I ended up being rather high on the rankings on Soltech at one point mostly just playing solo on my own terms. You don't need to be a lone wolf or mindlessly follow the zerg either, it's easy to just join a squad and work on objectives your own way.

I really liked how there would be smaller groups who would band together to take a certain area and then move forward from there as an organized group, after a while you got to know the people who'd act as leaders and it'd be easy to find out what was happening on the server at the moment. Also kind of fun getting to know who to watch out for on the other side, although when I was playing hacking was pretty bad and you'd see the same cheaters around all the time.

I'm kind of baffled this game isn't getting all sorts of attention drummed up by Sony. It impresses even the most jaded PC snobs, its just that cool. It's cooler than anything else coming out that we've seen more than a short trailer for, that's for sure.

I may not play anymore but I think it's an experience people need to play at least once. Having this huge battle raging around you and realizing that every single vehicle and person has a real player behind it is just incredible.

How can they destroy PS4 when superior versions of every one of those games except Halo will be available on PS4 eventually? Planetside isn't going to give Destiny a hard time, they're not too similar.

They definitely need to speak up about this title and start including it when they show off a reel of their various 2013 games. F2P isn't the type of thing you normally go out and buy a TV ad for but you should hype it up at events and online a bit. Just 20 seconds devoted to it at the right event is enough to raise awareness.

It really is in a class of it's own when you're talking about large firefights. Even Battlefield doesnt come close. There's nothing like poking your head out to survey the chaos of a large battle and being anxious about moving a foot forward because it seems like the air is made entirely of bullets and explosions.

The game does need some more meta aspects though. Right now it's pretty much just endless regional tug of war. Hopefully once the game is on PS4 and they see the potential market, SOE will dedicate some more people to expanding the game's scope.

The whole idea is to reduce friction and get people playing. Having a "Play now free!" link that leads to a 15GB download doesn't really do that.

There's interviews where they say 2013 and there's also interviews where they say early 2014. It sounds like a late Dec/early Jan title.

It would have to be done by the end of summer to make the final system disk image, I think.

Couldn't Sony easily say a PS4 purchase comes with these games to make that day one price look even better? What's the harm?

I'd at least include it in the small print and/or final screen of each PS4 ad.

While I don't see how your argument makes sense anyway, you're also basing it off a flawed premise (why would Planetside 2 "kill" Destiny on the platform, a pretty different game?).

Microsoft doesn't have exclusive DLC for CoD or Battlefield. All they get is DLC packages a few weeks earlier than the PC/PS4 versions. Destiny has exclusive content on the PS4.

TitanFall is, by all accounts, a timed exclusive - I expect to at least see TitanFall 2 on PS4.

The PS4 will, due to its sizeable power advantage, have better multi-platform versions next generation. The PS4 will enjoy games with better visual fidelity and more stable frame rates. This could be a huge point in favour of the PS4, more than a few weeks of DLC exclusivity (Sony even has full-on exclusive DLC for multiple games) - which didn't seem to matter all that much this generation.

I played ps2 on pc quite a bit, and liked it a lot, but ultimately I don't think the game has enough direction or ultimate goals to strive towards. Its just constantly taking over areas/losing them, rinse and repeat. Have the upgrades gotten a lot better in the last few months? That would help a bit.

They would have to note they were online games, but besides that its free marketing for the games too. Id do it.

Doesn't appeal to a wide enough audience and the learning curve is steep.

I do think F2P games will flourish on PS4, though.
