Anybody playing Izuna?

It is about as a rogue-like as it gets with a few twists added on. The ability to quit and save at any ladder down to the next level is making it perfect for the subway.

How many levels is the dungeon that blocks exit to the village?

What are your favorite weapon seals? I've been sticking three hayate seals on swords so that they attack twice. The downfall is that the sword goes poof if you die, since you don't have a 4th spot for the seal that returns it to storage upon death.

I'm finding that if I lose my equipment that I often have to go back to a previous dungeon for new equipment because I get obliterated without gear. This doesn't start happening till the 4th or 5th dungeon.

Anyways, fun little game if you're into rogue-likes.

Played it a bit, and liked it.
Since I didn't have a manual, I kept loading my claws with seals and getting really frustrated when they'd break after a couple'a swipes >_>

Just wish there was some of that promised lesbianism. Even though the dialogue is facking hilarious, I still feel kinda duped on that count.

I want to want this. Can anyone explain to me how rouge-likes are supposed to be played, since every reviewer who didn't like it "played it wrong"? Not being sarcastic here, well not much.

How does one ideally play a rouge-like game? what is the draw?

Why does that happen? I haven't read the manual either.

All weapons have an SP capacity. All seals have an SP cost. Slap a seal onto a weapon, and it's cost is reduced from it's capacity. Exceed the weapon's capacity with... less than ideal results.

It's a hardcore dungeon crawling game. Very little to do outside of the dungeons, even though talking to NPCs is hilarious in its own right.

Dungeons are grid based, and randomly generated. So are the enemies. You take a step, all the enemies take a step, so it can be thought of as turn-based.
You can only equip weapons, though they serve as amour as well (give you DEF boost).
And if when you die, you'll lose all your items and money. But not your EXP.
That's why there's a bank and storage room in the town, as well as a smith to repair what few weapons you can make it out with.

Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Yeah, even the Pokemon rogue-like was too tough for me at times.

Pokemon! I imagine more hardcore rogue-like would destroy me.
Pokemon wasn't hard, that much is true, but it suffers from an extremely shitty user interface. You'll have no problems using items or just navigating the menu with Izuna.

there is gamefly on argentina? damn!
FlyinJ is Argentine too? Awesome!

Is there a way to "hotkey" items in the game? It sucks having to scroll to a caltrops or whatnot every time I want to use one.

Realize also Gamestop/EBGames has this amazing new method of selling ONLY the DS cart sans box or manual as part of their used games and yet their used prices stay the same. If it hasn't hit your local store yet, don't worry, it will soon.

What a fantastic store!

.....you've never hit R?

Also, they tell you this in-game, you know.

I'm currently going through the Water Cave. Really starting to get pummeled by enemies now. Those frogs that drop 1~3 eggs when you kill them are really annoying when you're in small corridors. That and the lack of good lighting in corridors adds some fun challenge too.
Very happy with it. I love a good crawl.

Hoo boy. I was one of those reviewers, except that I'm not a total rogue-like noob. It's about managing your resources, taking each step with utmost care, trying to keep the dungeon from screwing you over. Rush headlong into it, and the dungeon will hand your ass to you.

My problem with Izuna was that it had way too much bad luck. There's being challenged, then there's being repeatedly screwed over and beating the dungeon with more luck than skill. If I wanted a luck-based game, I'd play a slot machine.

Furthermore, I wasn't really impressed with the graphics, music, and dialog. Izuna the character irritated me to no end, especially when she kept putting a gun to her head in an attempt to get her way. Sad, because after reading a little about it, I had expected to enjoy the game. It ended up being one of my most hated games of all time.

That said, Izuna, like some other Atlus titles, will appeal to a niche audience. It's one of those weird love-it-or-hate-it games, though most people will hate it because of the amount of bad luck programmed into it.

Yeah, R + Y, A, or B. An on-screen display will pop up to show you which button corresponds to which item.

The bad luck just requires a bit of preparation. I only get screwed over when I am not paying attention.

Later on in the game you can buy phase door and return scrolls. At that point, if you die on anything except a boss it was your own fault.

A list of pointers would be good for people just starting the game. There are a few things that aren't made obvious by the manual or in-game information. I noticed that if my SP was low that it affected how strong my physical attacks were too. I didn't see that anywhere in the manual, but it might be there.

I use a double-hit sword and the arm that prevents most status ailments, most of the time and that allows me to breeze through just about anything. Some little kid was watching me play on the subway and I got to talking to his mom instead of paying attention to the game. Long story short, I hit a sweaty trap or my sword broke and instead of doing 4k+ each round I was doing less than a 1000 and didn't even notice till I saw the "saving". It was like, "Nooooooooooooooo". But ultimately, that was my own fault. :p

Care to go into detail on this one? I'm on the fourth dungeon, and I'd hardly credit any of my success or failure to luck.

well you guys can read my not entirely positive impression on the official topic that was already linked
as i said if you want to play a truly good console roguelike, get the fantranslated SNES rom of fuurai no shiren
i just can't stress this enough

And just when you thought you couldn't get enough...

やった~!イヅナの続編決まりました!

I thought this game was absolutely terrible.I was very excited for this game and it pretty much disappointed me in every single department. This so far has been my biggest let down this year.

More like little kids trading it w/o box/manual.

The first one on the search (17 days newer!), excuse me. :P

Besides, it was either this or creating a new thread for a text blurb.

Hmm. I've only done one dungeon run so far, but from what I played, I saw much about it to love! I really need to clear off some of my portable RPG backlog... then again, not likely anytime soon, since it's about to grow by 5! :o

Izuna official thread was on the SAME PAGE as this topic when doing a search for "Izuna."

Seriously, I just don't get why so many people around here are allergic to putting in five seconds of work when doing a search. No, it's much easier to create a new thread so that I don't have to do any work!

...proving my point exactly.

It is Moria/Rogue with some basic graphics, on a handheld. You either like that sort of game, or you don't.

Why do people have so much problems spelling the word 'rogue' right?

Especially when people are spelling it correctly in the channel already. Playing WoW used to drive me nuts due to so many people saying "rouge". It's ROGUE people ROGUE!!! R-O-G-U-E!

Any strategies on upgrading equipment? In my single dungeon run, I had found a neat Katana that broke a few enemies in, leaving me to fend off the baddies with a dwindling stock of stars and my fists... :(
