Anyone else chew on their pillows?

GAF I have a problem. I can't stop chewing on things, especially pillows. I'm not talking about pillows for my bed, I'm talking about throw pillows like you would see on a couch. I like the ones with firm edges the most because I only chew on the corners. I do this all the time and I need to stop. I don't know if it's a nervous habit or what, but let give you some details.

Whenever I'm sitting on my couch using my laptop I have the strangest urge to hug a pillow and chew on the corner of it. It's not like I'm trying to eat the damn thing, I just like to clamp down on the edges with my canines and kind of rub the material between them. More of a gnawing motion I suppose. I only do it when I'm on my computer or reading, or distracted by other things and never really notice it until I have a soggy pillow corner in my mouth. If I'm laying in my bed using my laptop or my vita and don't have a throw pillow available I'll wrap a blanket around myself and start chewing on parts of that instead, or I'll chew on the strings of my hoodie. I just bought a hoodie with metal tipped strings, and so far it has curbed my desire to chew them, but I obviously can't get metal plated pillows so I'm kind of screwed for that..

I also used to have a serious problem chewing on the collar of my t-shirts as a kid, so every single shirt I owned had that crusty bacon look around the neck. I would especially chew on my shirt collars while pooping, I guess because I had nothing better to do. Now I just play on my vita when I use the bathroom and I've mostly stopped chewing, but I'm ashamed to admit that when I stand up to pee I sometimes hold my shirt up by biting onto the bottom of it, and when I get out of the shower I sometimes hold my towel with my teeth instead of using my hands like a normal person.

When I was in high school I would chow down on my pens to the point where I'd be sucking on ink out the back of the pen before I stopped. I never really chewed on pencils though, I don't like the taste of the yellow paint flakes that you inevitably eat when doing so, but I had an insatiable appetite for chewing pens, BICs especially. There's something about that plastic tube that was irresistible. I know lots of people chew on pens, but I assume it's related to my fabric chewing addiction so I figure it's worth mentioning.

So yeah, that's my weird thing that I do(seems like everyone on GAF has a weird habit they make a thread about) and I'm wondering if anyone else does this or has advice on how to stop doing this. I don't know if it's boredom, anxiety, or something more sinister, as I do actually enjoy chewing on pillows, but I know it's wrong and want to stop.

TL;DR: I chew on lots of stuff, fabrics especially. Help me out GAF

And yes I'm serious, and yes I'm chewing a pillow as I type this.

Uh... have you tried gum? It's pretty great. Might help extend your wardrobe.

Yeah, forgot to mention that. Doesn't work for me and I hate gum. It makes my mouth tired. As I said I don't really chew, I kind of gnaw at the corner by rubbing my teeth together.

There was this show about people who have weird fetishes....

Is chewing on stuff a fetish? It's certainly not sexual.

This really made me laugh. thanks

lmao. I don't chew soft pillows for beds though, I only like throw pillows with hard corners because they're actually chewy instead of squishy. Plus I sleep on that, I don't wanna sleep on my saliva.

Never had that problem.

But I'll share a weirdness of mine that I used to have: I used to 1) pull my hair out when I was a kid, and 2) feel compelled to scratch paper and hard, smooth surfaces with my fingernails.

One of my friends saw me do it and asked if the paper was itching. I was so embarrassed. lol

I pretty much leave the chewing for food. Not really sure how to break a habit like that, other than paying closer attention to what your body is doing at all times and forcing yourself to stop.

I didn't read teh whole thing but... I don't do this. And I might have been one of those people to chew on hoodie strings, but got over that real quick. The amount of bacteria that you leave, and then reingest later should be enough to quit. Or take a whiff of it a few minutes after.

My recommendation is to start chewing gum to help you with your fixation. Then ween yourself off that eventually.

Ah gum doesn't work for you.

Then I would look at getting some sweet low/0 sugar losanges. to suck on. Jawbreakers and the like.

Have you tried...just stopping? I used to have bad habits like picking at my nails, and one day I just decided I should stop doing it. Then if I felt like doing it I just didn't.

I know these kinds of things are supposed to go deeper than that, but I always feel like people don't stop these habits because they don't really want to. Maybe I'm off base, but even harmful habits seem to provide some kind of immediate comfort to people, which seems to be why they continue them.

If just quitting cold turkey doesn't work, try following any of several guides on the internet.

carry gum or lollipops w/ you. i had to do this for awhile when i quit smoking or else id end up chewing on shit constantly

plus if you always have a lollipop, you can pretend your kojak

I don't chew pillows, but I have the most odd habit of squeezing things in a way that feels really comfortable in my hands at the moment? Like it could be the corner of a pillow, I will squeeze it in a way that moulds into my hands perfectly, I clench my teeth, and for a few seconds, I'm just a weirdo with a brain malfunction. Done it all my life, with all sorts of objects.

Whew can't believe I admitted that out loud.

No, but I drool all over them. Half the time when I wake up in the middle of the night my mouth is open and there has been a cascade of saliva all onto the pillow.

I have to flip it to avoid sleeping on the wet spot, same as the after sex bed puddle.

So we have a handful of droolers but no chewers? Am I really alone in this GAF?
