I have a long time friend who only sleeps 4 hours per night and functions fine. He gets to fit tons of extra stuff because he doesn't need much sleep.

Personally, I need at 8 sometimes 9 to be functional and alert. So working a regular job, after going to the gym, commuting and cooking a meal. I only have 1 hour of ''me'' time on weekdays.

I am more cursed with a mind that requires more sleep, if I dont get enough sleep I am rubbish and prone to worry etc.

My GF is lucky she can get like 4-6 hours and she is fine, me I need at least 8.

Me. If I get less than 8 I'm tired for most of the day. 9 hours to 9.5 hours seems to be my sweet spot.

Yeah. I used to be able to run on 2 or 3 hours of sleep, as long as I had some caffeine on the side, but I think I've become too dependent on caffeine lately and I really need my eight hours to function because of it.

I'm the opposite.

I could function on 3 hours of sleep (and often have) and will never sleep past 6 hours on my own.

Pretty sure it has shaved 20 years off my life though...

This week I've averaged 6 hours and I've been wrecked.

It sucks for desk jobs as sitting in front of a PC all day is not something that helps you wake up. When I worked more physical jobs, the adrenaline will keep me up.

Yeah, while it varies with bouts of minor insomnia, I pretty much have to average 7-9 hours. It's very annoying to not be able to fall asleep at a certain time and knowing you're kind of fucked for the next day even if you got six hours of sleep.

Yeah... I have to start getting up at 6:00 for work and I've been going to bed by 9:30. Feels bad, man. I still wake up feeling tired too :|

This is me as well.

It's just as much a 'curse' to be like that too.

I function on 4-7 hours sleep generally, but I know it's not 100% effectiveness, but I can't sleep. Go to bed early, end up waking earlier.

Heck, went to bed at 1am, and now just woke at 5am. Once I'm awake, my brain switches on and it sucks. Can never sleep in.

Hmmm. Maybe it's my lifestyle and not my brain though. Sleeping poorly will shorten your life, so maybe I need I have some changes.

There's just not enough hours in the day.

Basically my body wants 9-10 hours of sleep, but then wants to stay up for 17 or 18 hours.

A 28-hour day would be more my style, apparently.

Sleep experts say that you should go to sleep at the same time everyday for maximum circadian function. But weekends always mess it up. I can't fall asleep at 10 or 11pm on the weekend. That's just depressing.

I need 8-9 hours for a good nice sleep. 7 is pushing it and is the bare minimum, but the effects are really noticeable. Especially if I want to study, learn new things, or remember trivial parts of the day.

Anything under that and I'm working on purely short term memory...

I need a solid eight or nine hours sleep really. All too often I end up only getting six or seven. Takes me several hours to be properly alert in that case, but after that I'm good.

I can sleep 4, 8, 10, 2 hours a night and be sleepy no matter what.

Especially in cars, I fall asleep driving or as a passenger a lot. I have to be careful and know when to drive or not drive. The act of driving or being a passenger just lulls me to sleep.

Even when I'm not openly tired I can lay my head down and pretty much fall asleep. Happens a lot when I try to watch TV. We put a movie or show on and I get comfortable and drift off, I actually fall asleep in movie theaters..ALOT!

Its good sometimes, if we are at her mothers house...I take a nap...nothing to do aroudn the house and no wheres to go...I take a nap..
My wife hates it tho, but its like my little escape from boredom or to pass time.

But...when I come home from work at 12:30ish am I CAN NOT sleep. I find myself "doing" stuff to the wee hours of the morning, like I have to be active and get stuff down I wont have time to do later.

Yeah, I have an early schedule, but If I want a social life I have to fuck up my sleep cycle. Everyone just sleeps in til noon and I'm up at 6:30am... usually they only want to hang out during the work week too... RAAAAAAA so annoying.

Yep... I sleep way too much.

I wish I could be one of those people who only sleep like... 3 or 4 hours a night, or less than eight hours every 2 days or something and be fine... What do they call those people? Oh yeah, successful.

I used to get by with 5-6 hours when I was a teenager and in my 20, but lately I feel like I need twice the amount to feel coherent, which suck asses. Getting old sucks!

Trying going to the gym less. You will have more time.

Yes. I need like 9+ hours, but combined with the fact that I have to get up at like 6AM and get home from work at like 7PM, I just can't do it... Doomed to spend every day exhausted as shit. But on the other hand, I'd just go ahead and kill myself if I basically had to come home from work, cook, eat and go to bed.

lol that is totally me, for me I think it was from a decade of working in the service industry (waiter, bartender, ect.) where i used to work split shifts and them moving over to a "9 to 5 " job. My internal clock never corrected itself

I absolutely need 8 hours. Any less and I might as well not show up. If I don't get 8 hours I usually wake up really groggy. If it's significantly less than 8 hours, I wake up with a headache. 6 hours of sleep is right out of the question for me.

I need like 9 or more to feel alert and not require a nap in the afternoon. The bad thing is I don't usually feel tired until 11ish...so I usually end up getting 7 hrs max.

I find I get the most rest in two 4 hour breaks/naps. I would rather sleep 4 hours in a day than 6 or even 9-10 in a row. In high school I used to sleep for 12 hours at a time and would still be tired when I woke up.

Ugh, yeah. If I want to get a good night's sleep and actually function the next day I need to get into bed by 10 because it takes me at least an hour to fall asleep. Gotta get up at 6:30 the next day so if I actually want a full sleep then I basically have to go to bed as soon as I get home from the gym, shower and make dinner. Shit sucks.

Yea, I need 8 hours or I'm destroyed. I think it's because of the gym, but I remember it being like this when I was younger. Sometimes I also think I just realize how good I feel after a full nights sleep, while people who sleep 6 hours all the time don't realize that feel.

Sleeping poorly will shorten your life, but only if your body requires the nominal amount of sleep. You may not be sleeping poorly for your body and thus will not have any terminal effects because of it.

There are certain individuals that simply require less sleep than most everybody else.

If I sleep any more than 6 hours I wake up feeling awful.

I'm cursed with the opposite. No matter what time I go to bed, I wake up between 6:30-7:00am on the dot wide the fuck awake. I can function with 2-4 hours of sleep for a week or two, and after that point, my body will shut down and I'll probably sleep a full 8-10 hours... and then I'm fine again.

Up until I was about 17-18, I woke up at around 4:30-5:00 am every morning. It sucks being up for 7 hours when noon hits, your days feel SO fucking long.

I feel your pain. I only get about 6 a night but I realistically need an average of 9 every night.

It's really, really bad.

I prefer between 5 and 7 but I can do well enough on 4, though I have a hard time waking up. Over 7 makes me groggy.

If I get 7 or more hours of sleep I feel terrible most of the time. Between 4 and 6 is when I feel the most normal and alert. It doesnt make sense to me.....

I sometimes sleep for 12 to 14 hours on the weekends because I feel sick that I slept to much as it is.

6 hours is the sweet spot most of the time.

Man I've been going to work with around 6 hours of sleep for the past 8 months. I tell myself I'm going to sleep early tonight but never do.

Do you have stairs by your office? Once every hour, hour and a half I go out and run up and down the stairs a few times. Does wonders.

I can function on 5-6 hours fairly well but my biggest problem is making it through the first 10-15 minutes of the morning without going back to bed. I have flexible start times for work which means if I wake up at 6 or 7 am and have already had 7-8 hours of sleep, my brain doesn't have the mental will to make me get up for the first 10-15 minutes until i start hitting the "oh shit, i'm going to show up late way too late to start the day" mentality.

I sleep 10 hours on off days but when I work I can get by on 5 just fine.

I don't drink caffeine in the morning and when I do it's just a glass of soda or something in the evening.

I used to suck on 5 hours of sleep, probably because my body needed it for puberty or something. I'm 25 now, so I guess I just don't need it as much anymore.

I need about 7hrs. Oversleeping can have the exact opposite effect on me though. Anything more than 8hrs and I feel like absolute shit.

As I grow older (32), I really do wish there were more hours in a day. There's just so much interesting stuff to do out there, but never enough time. How the hell do you guys even beat RPGs anymore with jobs and families etc.? I don't ever have more than a few hours at a time once in a while to game anymore.

Thats my main issue too. I manage time well, but thats all going away in October since my wife is pregnant.

It'll be worth it though!

I work continental shifts so my pattern is always completely fucked.

I can do 13 hours and still really struggle to get out of bed. Might have bloody sleep apnea or something.

For a lot of people, it might be worth looking into a few things.

1. Diet. Are you getting a lot of healthy food? If you eat poorly, you feel like shit and you want to sleep more. Lots of fresh veggies, whole foods, protein (meat!), iron (especially if female), unprocessed carbs in moderation.

2. Sleep quality. Are you tossing and turning without knowing it? Go to bed at the same time every day, and wake up at the same time every day. Even on the weekends. People will often sleep in to catch up on sleep, but it actually screws up your clock and makes you worse off when you stay up late on Sunday or toss and turn in bed. If you stare at a lot of blue light at night it'll screw up your sleep cycle. Go to sleep a little before you feel like you have to and you feel better; play those games in the morning!

3. Sleep timing; people can feel great on less sleep if they have a short nap during the day. It works well.

4. Fitness levels; people who are in shape can sleep a little less and feel fine; they're healthy. Most people treat their bodies like shit and end up feeling terrible all the time.

5. Daily activity levels; if you are doing heavy work all day you'll be more tired. If you sit on your ass you'll also feel sluggish until you get moving. If you have an office job, take a brisk walk right after work and you'll feel the difference.

Yep. 8-10 hours needed or I'm feeling sluggish most of the day. Two or three nights in a row of 6-7 hours and I'm doomed.

I have a few things to fix in my life that I'm sure contribute to the problem, as outlined in some posts above (including better/more exercise and diet fixes).

There's just not enough hours in the day.

Basically my body wants 9-10 hours of sleep, but then wants to stay up for 17 or 18 hours.

Yes, absolutely. The days never feel long enough. The nights never feel long enough.

Well, seeing as I only sleep 3 hours per day (4 hours when I am lucky) from Monday to Friday, I guess I am not cursed.

On weekends I sleep 6~9 hours per day, though.
