Anyone else dislike steelbook cases?

Hate them. It's why I don't get collectors editions. Luckily Metal Gear Solid V collectors edition contains the regular game case and the steelbook.

It's even nicer in person :)

Caved and bought it at the jacked up ebay reseller price. I'll see it in person soon enough.

I wish more games came in cardboard cases. What I love about special edition David Fincher blurays is they usually come in a cardboard case and they look so nice. Much better than a steelbook in my opinion.

I actually hate the Gone Girl case because it opens on the left.

Is that a real Steelbook (with the logo on the inside) or is it like Namco's other "steelbooks"?

I'm not sure what you're referring to as far as a logo on the inside, but I assume it's like any other steelbook Namco makes. It's a gorgeous piece regardless, especially if you're a fan of the game (I am, I own pretty much every collectible piece related to it).

To this day, I cry a little inside whenever I see these steelbooks for the last of us. They should have been made available worldwide damn it.

Import it on eBay? That's what I did. The only problem with it is that the title on the spine goes from bottom to top, which looks weird alongside all my other games.

The Steelbook logo, I mean. Steelbook is a company.

The case you posted doesn't look the same as the Tales of Xillia 2 and Dark Souls 2 cases, so I'm not sure if it's a "Metal Case" or an actual Steelbook.

Apparently I dislike to them to a high enough degree to:

- not pre-order the limited edition for Bloodborne while having some interest in the art book and soundtrack;
- leave Arkham City - for which I accidentally bought the steel case version through Amazon - on my backlog for many months (not as the only reason of course, but still).

Don't exactly know what bothers me about them apart from me being the type that likes things to be similar if they belong to the same category.

In this example: because all my game cases happen to be of the regular plastic variety, having one or two steel cases makes those games feel "weird" by standing out too much in other words. (I have the same problem with PS3 cases in general after Sony changed the lettering on their front and spine to the new logo - now I want all of them to have the new logo.)

That said, if I had started buying the steel versions from day one for some reason, I might be hunting for those at the moment and would be ignoring normal cases as best as I could.

Let's just say I'm a bit weird when it comes to these things.

I love them but I still generally won't go out of my way to obtain them.

Mostly it's because they are cleaner and feature much nicer art. Like The Witcher 3 standard is generic and boring as heck, but the steelbook is gorgeous and you don't get stuck with any dirty "PS4/X1/PC" logos and whatnot running all over the case. They also feel great to handle, just have to be careful not to scratch 'em, which I've personally never had an issue with.

I wish there was a viable way to make them myself, so I could slap the neat art of that GAF Collection thread on custom Steelbooks.

I love the unique art that generally goes onto them, but the actual build quality of the things are generally shit, so yeah, I'm not into 'em.

I handle my stuff about as carefully as I can, and somehow my TLoU steelbook is already dented and chipped, as are the one or two other steelbooks I own. I feel like some kind of laminate would do wonders to at least keep the paint from rubbing off.

I wound up making my own case for the Mass Effect 3 LE just because it was so difficult to pry those discs out of the thing.

I like ones that make sense. I got one with Dead Rising 2 that looked like a Zombrex package. This made sense since Zombrex is a big part of the game. Generic artwork steelbook cases are just stupid to me, and far too cold to touch, especially in winter.

I'm OCD and will go out of my way to NOT buy them because the casing won't be the same as the rest of my games. This is the same reason I don't buy platinum edition game.

I absolutely hated the change in font / packaging during the PS3. It forced me to split my PS3 collection in 2.

Psrsonally, I have a deep seething burning indifference as intense as a thousand suns. Not a fan of the hinges though, to be honest.

I prefer them, if only because the chances of shitty art is infinity lower for steelbook cases in comparison to the regular brands.

In fact I absolutely abhor what has become the standard for plastic cases nowadays. I miss the era of hard glass like plastic cases that emulated CDs rather than DVDs

So it generally goes

Steelbook > Old Plastic Cases >>>>>>>>>>>>>> the standard plastic cases of now

I want all cases to be Steelbook. But the real one, not the cheapskate Metal Case (ie. MKX one).

Is that a real Steelbook (with the logo on the inside) or is it like Namco's other "steelbooks"?

The Ni no Kuni one is actually a real glossy Steelbook. Unlike Scamco's other metal cases.

I think they have lost any special appeal when tons of games started getting them. They are mass produced merch junk to me. I have a bunch from pre-2010 when I thought they were interesting. Only a couple after that.

Digital only now. Done with this made in China clutter.

I feel the same way. Never understood the appeal of steelcases - but in that regard,i also never understood the appeal of special / limited editions. All i ever wanted was to play the games and not collect merchandise.
I'm exactly the same, I couldn't care less about all the extra gaff you get with a limited edition. I'm not much a collector of anything though to be fair.

I like them, they are great pre-order incentives, especially when it costs nothing extra, we usually get steel cases as pre-order incentives in SA where day 1 buyers will get the standard cover and then the steel cover as a bonus without needing to buy the collectors edition or something.

Only one I have ever gone out of my way to get was the Marvel vs Cacpom 3 steel cover because the artwork on it is amazing and it never released locally.

They're by far my favourite. Not only is the material nicer to the touch, weightier and more tactile, the art is usually always more sophisticated and slick compared to the regular cover.

Nice. I might have to hunt one down when I've got a bit more spare cash on me.

Plastic is cheap
Steel is expensive

Cheap build vs. durable build

Slightly unrelated story of misfortune:
I used to keep my game cases where the sunlight passed through.
I ended up with games that were unplayable due to the light going through the cases and ruining some of the discs. Of course solved by just moving the shelf to a different place. Be careful.

I don't mind them as long as they don't get scratched or dented. I have the GTA V and Doom 3 (XBOX) ones. I might have the Halo 2 steel case as well but I may just think that because I see it in a lot of game shops.

I have like maybe 4 or 5 through out my years of gaming. Fucking hate them. I like it when its given out as a pre order bonus or something like that, and it becomes secondary to the normal case. Kinda like what they did with AC3 and i think Ni No Kuni? Sometimes they don't even include it with the big collectors, but they do with the mid tier collectors like with Halo 3. Either way i think they look dumb.

Edit: Actually i only have 2. Gears 1, and Gears 2. And their both the really think 2"- 3" thick ones. Thats why i hate them so much lol.

yeah i could do without the extra garbage

I tried buying digital only but hard copies are cheaper and sometimes they upgrade the pre-orders to limited edition which sometimes comes with a steel case.

also my wife likes to buy steel cases for movies which i hate as well, garbage.

i'm moving this weekend and i will be throwing them out like so much trash

but for those of you who enjoy these steel cases, have fun =) no judgement here.

I don't have many, but I have all the 3DS ones that were available (Both Pokemon ORAS steelbooks and the Majora's Mask one) and really like them - especially since they came alongside the original packaging, not instead of it.

They can be a nice bonus, if that's all they are. A bonus.
I hate when they replace a normal case with a steelcase and that's all you get. Looking at you Tales of Xillia 2 Day One Edition. -.-
As long as I get the normal/regular case, I don't see a problem with steelbook. But I do not want just steelbook cases.

That MGS4 case looks great. I've never owned a steelbook case for any game so I guess I'll find out when I get my Bloodborne CE case in a couple weeks.

I was pretty unimpressed by the Destiny one (lol), they're definitely not impressive on their own. The primary advantage is them not being retail packaging so they're full-art. My KH 2.5 collector's edition one is nice, and the FF Type 0 one looks great. The actual feel of the case is pretty lame though. Aside from being smooth it's worse than just plain plastic case IMO, and the spines look silly. And the MGS 5 one--horrible monstrosity. Where the fuck is my Shinkawa art.

If every game came with reversible, no-bullshit cover art (that were actually good) I'd take that over steelbook any day.

They can be a nice bonus, if that's all they are. A bonus.

I don't think I've ever gotten both. I hope MGS 5 has both, and Shinkawa art on the reverse of the normal case. ...they wouldn't screw us after even giving Ground Zeros Shinkawa art on the reverse, right...?

I dislike them. Ruins the flow of all the regular spines on my shelf and irks me.

I've gotten rid of my LE Destiny steelbook for a regular case because of this.

I dislike them, because my favorite thing about my gaming collection is the uniformity. All my PS3 games lined up look the same, all my Wii U games have their own nice looking section. But steel-book cases ruin the uniformity, and don't add anything enough for me to make them worth it. But I can generally overlook it, with one exception. When I have a full collection of a series with one steelbook or odd-sized case. For example, I have every FF game released on Sony platforms, and I opted not to get the Type-0 collector's edition because of the steel case. I love the look of the whole collection being uniform through the console generations. (obviously the PS1 games look different from PS2 from PS3 but within each generation all cases are the same)

I know it's probably weird, but I definitely value uniformity and the look of my collection as a whole from afar over the "better" (I think regular cases look fine) look of a steel case.

Are you...me? (See my earlier post :-) )

I'm pretty sure there's a bunch of us around. There's a lot of anal people in this world ;-)

I once hunted through 4 Shopping centres and 10+ game stores for an original package version of Uncharted (I also didn't want to buy 2nd hand) because I didn't want to buy the platinum cover. (Eventually found it smoking hot in a local Target!).

My Drakengard 3 is not stored with my collection but stuffed in a storage box because the PS3 logo is blue and white instead of black and white like every other case.

Grrr.
