Anyone else feel that MGS4 is quite depressing?

Yeah, I've been watching these too. Watching Drew just stare at the game clearly thinking "This is fucking shit. Why is any of this happening?" is hilarious.

Yeah, it's all very serious...until you stare at Naomi's chest to get psyche back because Kojima is a giant child. I'm already cringing thinking about any scene with Quiet in 5.

During the B&B sections, sure. But they just reached the church and both of them loved Big Mama's exposition dump, one of the most hated revelations in MGS4.

I dislike the B&B cutscenes as well, but so far we haven't really had any indication that the camera is going to be zooming up Quiet's crotch in V.

Though I think staring at Naomi's chest restoring your psyche is more hilarious than offensive

how can Johnny be the new snake, LOL.....that poor dude can't go for a decent sneaking mission without crapping his pants..

can you imagine play him in a sneaking mission, you are hiding in a closet, the enemy just walked past you and all of a sudden, you just farted? LOL..:P

His fear effected his abilities but by the end of the game he actually turned out to be a decent soldier, who just needed to man up. He saved Meryl from certain death and hell he even got the girl at the end.

Ha, have you seen some of the shit she can do in MGSV?

She headshots a pilot in a fighter jet from hundreds of yards out, lights Big Boss's cigar by shooting the tip of it and she can shoot your grenades to fling them in different directions.

She's amazing.

ITT: Man with mullet should never have a moustache.

Forgetting the nature of the game itself (shooting bee men, vampires, bomb man on rollerskates, woman can deflect bullets etc).

No, what is wrong with the world is the moustache. For sure.

Seriously, almost every time MGS4 is mentioned, I feel as if I'm the only one on GAF who really likes this game. Some of the hate posts are so hyperbolic. How is MGS4 a bad game in any way?

Anyway, I agree, OP. MGS4 aims to be a game with a depressing tone and it definitely succeeds. Solid Snake is one of the characters I sympathize with the most in video games.

You're not alone, for sure;
Code:
4 being a two-time 2008 GOTY winner proves that. It just usually those who will disagree with you about MGS4 talk louder/longer and use stronger words. People have strong feelings about this franchise, and it really shows with how much they like or hate one game or another. Maybe for several it's a bad game compared to other games they love in the franchise, but "bad" is going to be subjective one way or another.

Agreed. Another thing to note is that in the big game of the generation thread a while back, MGS4 was one of the most, if not the most, mentioned games.

So yeah, there are plenty of vocal haters but overall I think the game is loved well enough.

Quite depressing? Man, that microwave hallway is something way over the edge.
I cry like a girl everytime I replay it. it's too damn powerful.

p.s. I actually consider mgs4 being one of the best last gen games and I bought ps3 just to play it.

MGS4 was great. I don't know why it gets so much hate. That game along with Uncharted 2 and God of War III pushed me to get a PS3 when I already had a 360. Never regretted it.

The B&B backstories were depressing as well. And with the end of Act 3:
Solidus being the burned body and STILL BREATHING, jesus.

The game also nostalgia'd me more than anything else with Act 4.

... How is MGS4 a bad game in any way?
Maybe the fact that if you're any kind of a decent player you'll spend >60% of the "game" watching cutscenes and staring at loading screens?

My first playthrough of MGS4 was just over 16hrs. There are over EIGHT HOURS of cutscenes in the damned game, with one sequence that keeps you from playing for over a fucking hour!

MGS4 is great and one of the best ways you could connect and wrap up that huge mess (and I mean that in a nice way, I like the MG lore) of a story. And yeah, its a pretty depressing game :/

Old Snake spends like 90% of the cutscenes coughing and collapsing. Yeah, it's depressing.

And this. By Act 4 dude has half his face burnt, is barely struggling to get out of the way of a falling tree and then he has to fight a mechanical wolf with a sniper?

Man, I need to replay this soon.
I wonder how I'd feel about it now. This was an early last-gen title, so much happened since then, going back to it should be fascinating.
Say what you will about it, but it's a unique experience that you need to try at least once.
I still remember going "WTF?" at those crazy commercials...
And replaying the game with the podcast on, with the hosts guiding me to all kinds of crazy secrets I missed on my first playthrough.
And that return to Shadow Moses, with the music...
What a crazy ride this game is.

How is MGS4 a bad game in any way?

Not so much "bad" as a real low point for an otherwise consistently amazing series. The fact it came hot on the heels of (arguably) the series' peak didn't help matters either.

I found it had an obnoxious number, length and frequency of cutscenes which were poorly distributed throughout even compared to previous entries. I found the new controls and array of weapons made Snake overpowered meaning stealth was much, much, much less necessary... in a stealth game. I found the gameplay mechanics too numerous, inconsistent and not pushed as far as previous games would, making the experience less satisfying to play. I didn't like the fan pandering (even as a fan) and rather it had done its own thing (a la all previous entries), and I felt it was far too short.

Still played the fuck out of it.

That's the way I see it. It's not "bad" per se but I do consider it the lowest point of the series directed by kojima.

The ridiculous amount of fan pandering is the main reason this is the worst MGS game. The install screens, the bosses and the Meryl/Johnny BS would be other reasons.

A lot of important characters died too
. Regardless of some issues in the story and gameplay, I like MGS4 in a special way; it had memorable moments and great resolution to some characters' stories.

Yes, but it was also glorious. That graveyard scene is one of, if not the greatest scene in a video game ever produced. Of course this is completely dependent on knowing what the fuck was going on, but if you did, man...

This is good, isn't it?

*standing ovation*

I....really had the opposite reaction. I was pretty annoyed it didn't end where it should have, with Snake eating a bullet. That anime meme pretty much captured my reaction. It was one plot twist too many.

I guess I'm saying...the game isn't depressing enough? It would have been the perfect poignant ending. :(

Whenever this happens just read either of the two separate 2008 GOTY threads. Enough salt for all the pork in the world.

I completely understand what you mean. Since I have the exact same opinion. The twist at the end I felt as well was just too much. Hell it breaks one of Snakes quotes from MGS1.

Can't look it up but was along the lines of even though he killed his dad he felt bad about it and had to live with it. Having Big Boss come back and basically tell him it's ok is just way too happy. For what should be a depressing game.

Oh yeah, from a gameplay perspective, she seems fantastic. The cringing is more from anything thematic or story related involving her. I expect her to just spend all her time posing with the camera framing her chest and eventually some idiotic origin story for why she dresses like that. Hopefully, I'll be wrong but Kojima's track record with women is pretty embarassing.

Game was fucking awesome. Still one of my favorite intros.

I...just don't get it. What was depressing about it? Seemingly most in here are like "yeah its depressing". The only feeling i left away with was boredom. Unsatisfied mostly. I guess the characters held very little weight in my eyes that i fail to see what emotions were supposed to help me empathize with any of them.

Someone explain.

I'll help. I think your opinion is shit, Just like you think other people's opinion is shit.

People can say what they want about MGS4 but as a guy who has been following this game ever since MGS1 released on PS1, I loved the shit out of it and I don't even want to think how it would have ended if it wasn't Kojima working on the game. All I can think about is Mass Effect 3's ending lol.

MGS4 was a cathartic experience for me(all sillyness aside which is present in every MGS game). It was quite a ride I had with the game(series as well), the threat and stakes were raised to their absolute and it had a memorable bittersweet ending that ended with the classic yet uniquely arranged, Here's To You. 1987-2008. I forgot to mention it was quite surreal to see Snake being old, it's as if he was growing with us throughout the years.

So many people going for the low hanging fruit. I could never hate a game like mgs4. Why? Because no matter how flawed the story cutscenes load times etc its a game that is ambitious and made with tons of passion. I wish more games were made with that kind of effort.

I think what is most depressing about MGS4 is the dip in quality the game takes after Act 2. The game is pretty amazing up until then, the story hasn't shit the bed yet, and the gameplay, sneaking through actual battlefields, was a great way to shake up the formula of previous games. The enhanced controls were also awesome. What gets me though is that the game peaks so very early.

Act 3, is a mess, though it didn't bother me that much at the time, it was Noir, which I am a sucker for, and the city, while lifeless, had great atmosphere. The end of the act though was the beginning of me actually getting really, really bored with the cutscenes for the first time ever in an MGS. The scene with Ocelot taking over the soldiers could have happened in about 1/3 the time Kojima took and still been effective. The revelations prior to that seemed cool at the time, but don't stand up to much scrutiny.

Then we get act 4, the return to Shadow Moses should have been great, but it's all dodging robots. Dodging robots is boring. Very boring. The tools you have are limited, and the stealth there just didn't feel great. Boss fights weren't bad though.

Act 5 was essentially one long cutscene, with the best part being the microwave hallway. The stealth section at the beginning, also far worse than Chapters 1 and 2.

As far a depressing story, seeing Snake slowly die is painful, but most of the other emotional scenes didn't work for me. The deaths of Eva and Naomi in particular were supposed to be dramatic but ended up being comical, especially in hindsight. There was no reason for them other than melodrama, and it showed.
