Anyone else prefer the PS3 to the PS2?

Yes, hugely.

For me PS2 is one of those systems like the DS where, despite its colossal range of software, very little of it is interesting.

I could point to DMC1, the Onimushas, Okami and the Final Fantasies as my favourites, and that's pretty much it. By contrast there's a great deal more PS3 games that appeal to me.

PSone kicks both their asses, though.

As for an overall balance and variety of games, I think PS3 is better than PS2.

However simply for the shear wealth of RPG's on the PS2, I prefer that

Hell no. The PS3 turned me into someone who almost always plays 360.
PS2 was my number one console and probably my number 2 console of all time ( SNES being No 1 ), but this time I was wasn´t feeling it.

However I will be getting ALL next gen consoles as I always did - things might change again.

I don't think re-released "HD" versions should count, but w/e.

PS2 is a much nicer system than PS3. Less bugs, less hassle. No updates or anything. You put the game, and it plays! Holy shit. That's insane.

The PS3 is a system with a shaky foundation in my eyes. All the PS2 games I have will eventually become useless the day my 80GB Metal Gear PS3 dies and that pisses me off something fierce.
PCSX2 still exists.

No for me, but not by much. The PS2 probably has my favorite game library of any system and the PS3 is slowly getting there.

Considering how most of all the good PS2 games are getting rereleased... Yeah.

The PS3 is only missing FFXII

Dropped crap Square-Enix games and left the only good thing they've given in 10 years. You're welcome.

Not really. I played my PS2 a little bit more, though I will say I think I like Dark Souls more than any game I had on the PS2, even though it's multiplatform. But yeah, I enjoyed 2 just a tad more. I also enjoyed not updating shit. Ugh.

Nooooope. I wouldn't count the HD collections, if anything, the awesomeness of Metal Gear HD just underscores how bad this generation has been. PS2 has quite a few immortal keepers, and more importantly, the breadth it had was remarkable. For example, for my particular taste, the wrestling sims (FirePro Returns and King of Colosseum 2) are still the best in class. And that's only one example based on a particular niche. You can extend that out a ton of ways. It's not the best library of all time, but it's close, and it's certainly Sony's best by a country mile.

I'd probably take the PSP over the PS3, anyway, on the strength of Miku and KH ;)

PS3 is great, but PS2 had

Ico
SotC
Burnout 3
SSX3
MGS2
MGS3
Jak&Daxter
Jak 2
Jak 3
Silent Hill 2
Manhunt
GTA3
GTA:VC
GTA:SA
PES5
PES6
Resident Evil 4
TimeSplitters 2
God of War
God of War 2
Final Fantasy X

The only PS3 games for me which belong in that company where the PS3 version isn;t an afterthought are

Uncharted
Uncharted 2
Uncharted 3
Bioshock
RDR
Infamous
Infamous 2
Demon's Souls
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Batman: Arkham City
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Yeah, screw game patches and expansion packs that you can download. Also to hell with online multiplayer.

PS2 had a mindblowing library and in terms of how strong its library was back in the day, it easily wins over PS3.

In this day and age? PS3 easily.

It's too early to say but for the moment absolutely no, once Final Fantasy Versus XIII, The Last Guardian and possibly Kingdom Hearts 3 gets released maybe we can talk again.

Especially when you take into account exclusives only.

The Ps2 has a better jrpg selection, therefore it wins handily.

This is the main reason. Not much else to say for me, the Ps3 has no Suikoden, Xenosaga, Shadow Hearts or Venus & Braves. At this state it cannot compete.

Notice how the PS1 wasn't mentioned in the thread title, because if it was included there would be no discussion: PS1 dominates over all.

Not even close for me.
PS2 library > all current gen consoles combined, whatever else you wanna add. I have more fun with older games just like movies. having HD collection is really nice. This gen is in shambles quality wise. Only Uncharted 2, Bioshock, Red Dead are worth mentioning and it's a wrap.

PS1 games are painful for me to look at. PS2 level visuals are where 3D IMO looked nice enough.

I prefer this generation in aggregate to last generation, but last generation the PS2 was my #1 console, and this generation the PS3 is my... #5?

THIS.

I was a hardcore PS2 guy, had a great collection of games that I enjoyed. In 2006 and onwards, I bought all three this gen and have benefited from them all.

I prefer the 360 controller and ability to talk and play with friends, so that has become my "primary" system.

Only buy PS3 exclusives and "PS3-lead platform" games now...

Absolute favorite PS2 Games:

Timesplitters 2-3
FF12
Twisted Metal: Black
GTA-San Andreas

Absolute favorite PS3 Games:

Oblivion
Borderlands
RE5
Demon Souls
COD 4-7
Soon to be Borderlands 2

Also doing a quick count of secondary games I liked, it's easily given to the PS3. Also, PC has been snatching up games like Skyrim and soon to be Dark Souls whcih would have been on PS3 anyways. This gen started off really rough, but in the end I had so many games I loved to play.

I never played a PS2 game where I felt a patch was needed, and I only played 2 where I wished I could play online
Exactly. You felt that the game was complete, now you hesitate to think it's done, expecting a patch down the road.

Yeah, screw game patches and expansion packs that you can download. Also to hell with online multiplayer.
I don't care for online functionality, so that's obviously not even a consideration. And DLC can be seen as a detriment to people used to just buying a game, and maybe an expansion pack later that could very well account for a few DLC contents.

PS2 had better RPGs.

But PS3 had a lot of games that helped me to branch out from my heavy RPG bias.

Rarely played any gun-based games before Bioshock and Uncharted.

There were just as many broken games last gen, they just couldn't be fixed. That doesn't make them more complete then broken games that get patches.

I've enjoyed Sony's first-party games a lot more on PS3.

But companies like Rockstar, Square, Capcom, and Konami were easily much better on PS2, and exclusive as well.

Gotta give the edge to PS2, but just barely.

If I could erase my memory and play my favorite PS2 games for the very first time on PS3 I'd give it a yes.

Back in college we hooked up the PS2 at my friend's dorm and played a hundred games of Arcana Heart 2 with so much shouting and good times that the upstairs residents were banging on our ceiling. And then my friend introduced me to Shadow of the Colossus. I'm never going to forget how amazing that game was. I also spent more time playing RPGs on my PS2 from high school through college. My PS3 is still a great movie player though. I use it more for media than games.

I don't understand the "HD releases don't count" mentality. Consoles are just tools. It shouldn't be, "What did you do for me?" but, "What can you do for me now?"

The games library comparison is not even close. Even today, I find my PS2 backlog infinitely more gratifying than my PS3 library.

As a device, the PS3 wins as it suits my growth away from video games. This isn't to say it's not a good games console but that the whole package constitutes the definitive media center. After my PC, the PS3 has seen the most action of my gadgets this generation.

HD re-releases aside, the PS2's library beats the PS3's hands down in terms of depth and breadth. More quality games were released for the PS2 more frequently than what we've gotten on the PS3, with all of the overlong development times stretching things out this gen.

But with regard to system capabilities (XMB, online play, HDD built in, themes, multiple user accounts, downloadable demos... etc.), then the PS3 is leagues better than its predecessor.

JRPG fans are going to vehemently disagree with you.

Everyone else will agree.

In terms of total offerings (PS3 retail games, PSN content, online integration, PS2 HD re-releases, non gaming offerings like sony music unlimited, netflix, and amazon instant video) the PS3 is a better system than the PS2 in all areas.

I gravitate towards JRPGs and the oddball titles (like Under the Skin, Flipnic or RAD), so I still kinda prefer the PS2 over PS3.

Yes! I'm still picking up budget PS2 games (stuff from the Simple Series and a lot of what 505 put out back then). Europe got a lot shmups, too. And the quirky horror games, the fighting compilations, and classics like God Hand. Even now, I might even pick up games more regularly for the PS2 than I do the PS3.

I enjoy my PS3 and some its genre offerings are alot better than what the PS2 had. However the sheer amount and diversity of PS2 games is just mind blowing and hasn't been matched. For example, one of the HUGE failings of the PS3's library is the lack of RPGs. If you would have told me that it was a dying genre (on consoles) at the beginning of this generation I would have laughed at you.

PS2 has perhaps the best console lineup of all time, other than the PSX (maybe). So no, I prefer the PS2. I still love PS3 though.

Never cared for any of the PS2's stuff besides a few games, which admittedly MGS 2 is my favorite of all time. The only real great experiences I had on it besides that were Okami, which is an amazing, amazing game; something that would be on a top 10 list of all time for sure, Guitar Hero, which was cool, but was bested by Rock Band on the 360, and a couple other titles here or there.

I know this is late, and maybe a bit fanboyish, but I feel like all of what the Xbox had to offer felt more advanced, or just catered to what I liked more. Halo felt like something never been done before, and it still is the best thing in that franchise. KOTOR is still the best real-time RPG out there, and arguably one of the best RPG's of all time period. It was followed up with a great sequel, but more importantly, another masterpiece RPG in Jade Empire. Splinter Cell came out later on the PS2, but it felt gimped compared to what was on the Xbox. It was so fun, and really cool to see another take on the stealth genre besides MGS, and it worked flawlessly. Chaos Theory is all that needs to be said. Fable was a really creative and imaginative RPG, and yeah, it didn't live up to all of the hype, but I still lost countless hours to it. Don't even get me started on MVP Baseball 2005, or NFL 2K5, so damn fun. Rainbow Six felt like such an odd-game, but in a great way. It was so realistic for its time, but it was just so fun and addictive.

If you loved (W)RPG's and FPS's, the Xbox simply was the best thing on the market, and it's still probably my favorite system yet. Don't get me wrong, I love my 360, and my PS3, but the Xbox just hit on all cylinders for me. The controller, the branding, the games, just everything. It was great.

By the way, did anyone else here enjoy the Xbox more overall than the PS2? I know the whole "HEY DOES ANYONE ELSE LIKE DIS" thing is lame, but I'm really curious to know, because I usually don't see that opinion thrown around. If so, please say why.

I prefer the PS3 over the PS2, some of the best PS2 games have been released on the PS3 aswel in HD.

It just lacks FFX, some Onimusha, Kingdom Hearts, Maximo and its complete.
