Anyone else sticking with their old Nintendo DS?

The DS Lite is just friendlier on the eyes and on the hands. It was a bitch playing Biohazard DS in the car because the sun would produce way too much of a glare, making it very hard to see the screens. The DS Lite is bright enough to avoid that issue. It's also more comfortable in the pocket and backpack.

Mejilan is right when he says that the DS screens began looking outdated last September. The micro's screen blew the DS screens out of the water, and then Nintendo chimed in with the backlit Game Boy Advance SPs. For all of a month, the DS reigned supreme with the best screen on the market, and then the PSP came out in Japan. :P The DS Lite, though, has the best screens now. They're even a little brighter than the GBASP+'s.

I'm sticking with my old DS for now. The screens are fine. I don't mind the weight of the system either since I don't rely on it for portable gaming.

I'll eventually pick up a Lite when the price drops, or when some special DS Lite colours emerge.

just got the old one a couple of months back, even though I knew the Lite was coming out. i don't see any reason to buy the slim one.

there are people who are happy to play games on any old tv, and i suppose there are people who are similarly content with any old ds.
I don't think I could agree less. I'm a bitch for image quality -- and every day I'm forced to play with my current, shitty, TV is a pain in the ass. I've even had to stop playing games I loved because they looked too bad on this piece of shit plasma.

And I couldn't care less about upgrading my DS. The screens are fine. I mean, I'd upgrade if I had the chance to get in on one of those trade-in deals (best one I know of around here means you have to have 2 games to trade in and since I just borrow games from work my personal DS collection currently consists of 0 games), but I don't and I'm fine with still using my old one. Plus I've already got this awesome Hori stylus for it and shit. (It's extra large and designed to fit in the screw holes on the back and stuff.)

My old one was Disco Blue, the size of a small town, and as comfortable as playing games on a dead bum. I am glad I traded it in and I hope they smashed it with a hammer and I hope it screamed as it died.

The buttons on the DS Lite felt strange to me. I was playing Super Mario Bros. 2(japanese) on the Lite and I didn't feel like I was in total control of the character, and I didn't feel as confident playing it as I usually do. I switched back to my SP, and it felt MUCH better. I'll have to examine the two more closely to see why this is, but it's just something I noticed.

...damn it I like by big blue ds. Plus I play mostly gba games on it and I don't like how the cartridge sticks out on the dslight. That being said, if I wasn't poor, id get the light:D

I debated whether I'd get the Lite. I folded when Game Crazy told me they were giving $71 for the old DS model. I thought that was a crazy trade-in offer that I couldn't resist. Overall though, if you don't get a good deal, keep the old one. The Lite's screen is great, and next to the old model, is MUCH brighter... BUT, I find the soft D-pad is less accurate, which to me, is a pretty big deal. Yeah, it's more comfortable on the fingers, but I had problems going diagnal in some of my games.

Still, that's my only complain about the Lite, other than that I love it... works wonders for Metroid Hunters.

I still have my old DS and likely won't sell it. I'm glad they released an upgrade cause normally i'd never get 'approval' to buy 2 of the same thing for local wireless with me and my partner. But i managed to convince her to let me get a lite, and now we're having heaps of fun playing the old games again multiplayer.

Everyone who has a DS lite seems to act like the old DS isn't worth owning anymore. On the other hand, I myself can't find any reason to get the DS lite when my original one is just fine.

Seriously, if you already own a DS, what's the point? Did some of you buy a PSTwo when they come out or is this strictly a Nintendo fanboy thing?

yeah, I know what you mean. I'm sticking with my old my one :)

No, I am literally foaming at the mouth to trash my perfectly servicable DS Heavy for a revision that looks like an iPod.

I´m sticking to my old fat DS too. Up until now it´s worked fine. Obviously Lite is far better, but sometimes you cannot get what´s best, you know. I know there´re far better TVs, DVD players, mobile phones, cars and a helluva of things compared to the ones I own. I won´t suddenly die just because my DS isn´t as bright as the Lite, the dim screens are enough for me to water flowers in ACWW.

I caved, admittedly. The old DS was not traded in, but rather repurposed as a Family DS that my mother can use for Brain Training and that I can pull out for multiplayer. In the end, I think the upgrade was worth it, and I find the buttons much more comfortable and the system much moreso as well.

That being said, there's nothing "wrong" with the old DS. It still plays the games just fine, and all...I just wanted something a bit more, and paid more to get it. End of story, I guess.

I was thinking about getting a DSL just cuz it looks sweet. A few options would be: getting 20 bucks for the DS fat on a trade in or, if I'm feeling charitable, I might give it to my sister. See, I might buy her Minish cap and Nintendogs and spread the love.

And yes, I did buy a PSTwo. It was an impulse buy when GTA:SA came out. It looked so ****ing sweet. BTW, it's great having a job and disposable income.

You have no choice, you left it for someone to take!!! >:p

And my brick DS has been on its last legs for a few months now. In addition to that, there's two scratches on the touch screen (from Nintendo's own lstyus no less), the battery life is getting shorter and shorter, the GBA slot doesn't get detected 1 out of 5 times and it's a bitch to hold and use (Megaman Zero games are nearly impossible to play on the thing). I'll be glad when I chuck the thing to whichever poor sap that has the misfortune to inherit mine. :p

I'm sticking with my regular DS (for now) for several reasons:

I have a pink one.
There's no pink lite out yet.
I have no money.
I have no one to buy me one either.
I really want one, but I'm hoping my patience will be rewarded.

Once I get my lite, I'll let it be for showing off, and my old one for kicking it at home. Just leave it plugged in all the time so I can always be ready for a good wi-fi battle when I settle into bed. I wouldn't dare try playing with a lite in a darkened room. I've nearly blinded myself enough turning on my regular DS :D

Typical woman. The color is more important than the improvements.

*cough*

Well, I can't see reason to upgrade and I have the lame silver one anyway. I think I'm just going to sell it considering how little I use it now.

I got over 70 dollars trade in credit for my launch DS, why wouldn't I upgrade to the DS lite? A year from now the original DS will be practically worthless - the lite is better in every respect except for speaker volume (although I feel the lite's speakers are crisper).

I should add that the comparison to televisions just doesn't fly. I do all my console gaming on a 19 inch off-brand mono TV and it doesn't bother me at all. Why? Because the TV is bright with warm colors and the games look fine. The original DS was dark and everything was washed out. Granted, it was a huge step up compared to say, an original GBA, but the picture quality was still unacceptable. I'm not a graphics whore, I'm not one of those tech savvy people that must have the newest and greatest things (I don't even have a cell phone or cable/sattelite tv for pete's sake!), but when I play games I want to see what I'm playing without having to shut all the lights off in the house.

The Shadow, the DS you have is fine for you, why would you buy another one? Because GAF is buzzing?
Don't let people create yourself needs.

But I so badly want GAF to love me... *sniff*

It's not really a thread to convince me. More like I'm trying to get an idea why people are blasting the old DS all of a sudden when I don't see much difference between the two outside of the smaller package.

If anything, I won't be getting a DS lite and I'll probably sell my DS. I really don't play it all that often anymore.

:lol

make a side by side comparation of the two and then come back to me, after experiencing the DSlite I don't never ever want go back **** the old DS, DSlite is where is at.

Day one.

Actually, a couple days before it was supposed to be out. :D

Honestly it all comes down to "it looks better" and "the screen is having a brightness setting". If you really NEED portable gaming this might be a good buy because the DSlite might just be "portable" for a change. All previous handhelds can't be played anywhere as you need a particular light source to be able to play.
But if you play your DS casually or like at home like me, there really is no need to buy a lite.

It's actually a combination of factors, the amazing screens being the most obvious, and perhaps least signficant to actual gameplay.

As has been stated, the original screens were never "bad" enough to affect gameplay. That's where Nintendo's original GBA comes in, to be honest.

But now that developers are succeeding in implementing solid stylus-based gameplay, more and more games are requiring you to hold the handheld with one hand. And for extended periods of time, this is rather uncomfortable on the DS Phat. It's too large and too heavy to be held in one hand for extended portable play sessions.

These are the improvements, as I see them, in list form:

Aesthetic improvements:
+iPod like casing in look and feel (the DSL is very attractive, in a way no Nintendo hardware has ever been. It's slick and classy, outdoing the PSP's attractive but cluttered look with its pure, minimalist design).

+As has been mentioned. The new screens make it feel like you're playing your favorite DS games on "new television set(s)").

Gameplay improvements:
+The screens DO help you see things you might have otherwise missed in certain, darker games. (In particular, the improved screens give DSL owners a slight competitive edge in Metroid Prime Hunters multiplayer, IMHO).

+Stylus. I have about half a dozen stylus solutions on the original DS, and the one included with the DSL smokes them all WITHOUT breaking in-system storage compatability).

+Lighter, smaller form factor (as discussed above. Much more comfortable for extended, mostly one-handed play-sessions).

+GBmicro has the best d-pad since Sega's Saturn pad. And the DSL has inherited it. Buttons are improved as well.

I'm upgrading to a DSL once I have money to spare. My blue DS had two stuck pixels from day one and they didn't bother me, but today I noticed two more stuck pixels directly next to each other. They stick out so much. >:(

I actually just got a DS Lite in Den Den Town yesterday, after sticking with the DS Phat of shame for some time. Sitting on the train and playing a DS phat while a 13 year old girl next to me played on an enamel blue DSLite was emasculating.

I`m really glad I changed over, though. The screens are crazy bright, and the feeling of the touch screen`s `cushion` when you touch it with the stylus is really cool. I totally recommend the DS Lite over the phat.

Just got a DSlite 4 days ago! Not only is it worth it for the brighter screen, but also for the d-pad and buttons. MK, and other games that rely on the d-pad are easier to manuver with it, IMO.
