Anyone else's backlog reaching critical mass?

I need to stop buying games. :( But when I see a bargain I just can't say no, its the collector in me.

Maybe I just need to stop driving myself crazy with wanting to PLAY them ALL and just say f**k it, I'm a collector, this is what I do *puts game on shelf never to open*.

lol. ;(

lol totally relate to this.. how can you pass up a bargain, especially for a new release. The next few months are not going to be unhealthy.

The situation's only getting worse due to a combination of university work and games prices dropping like crazy in sales all over the place.

I don't have the ability to turn down quality games for <£10, what do you take me for? :(

I know the words "too many games" is thrown about way too often, but it seems to be more true now than ever. How do you guys deal with it all? How do you choose what to get and what to skip?

For me: having new hardware like the 3DS looming on the horizon, a bunch of unfinished DS, PSP, and PS2 rpgs, trying time to finally play Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2 left unfinished, never having finished Red Dead Redemption (still in the middle of Mexico), wanting to finish Yakuza 3 before Yakuza 4 hits next week, trying to squeeze in another ballgame in MLB 11 The Show, and looking forward to Motorstorm next week as well.

And this only the tip of the iceberg. I could go on and on. Shit, I still want to go back and play some Demon's Souls. And...oh fuck. I have LittleBigPlanet 2 virtually left unplayed as well.

I don't know if this is just a question of buying too many games, or I'm not selective enough, but all these games really interest me and I want to play them all. I just...can't.
Spend less time in GamingAGE. The biggest problem for me is that I read about all these awesome games that I feel compelled to buy because they are good and they will still be good when I get to them. Cut out the gaming information flow and you will notice a huge difference. If you want to do that kind of nonsense. Never know when you get bedridden for a week or snowed in, always good to have a backlog!

I've got so many games I quit playing them. Every morning, I boot my computer only to turn it back off when I see the list of games I haven't even touched and just give up. Same for every console I own. Not to mention my list of unwatched movies and shows. Even my books have a backlog. Pathetic.
+1. First World Problems. (also Steam Problems)

I plan on clearing my backlog out this year, or at least 90% of it. I set myself the target of finishing 1 game every week and I'm currently on course, if I manage to stick to that then I should have everything done with a bit of room for a few of the more interesting day one purchases this year.

I have a three figure backlog these days.

I just don't have the time to put a significant dent into anything but handheld games, which I can play on the commute to/from work.

mainly rpgs on ps2, psp, 360 and ps3... thank god I didn't get the ds, very tempted when dragon quest was released... the backlog is too long and I just gave up playing and buying...

Pretty sure that my backlog has actually created a small black hole in my closet (and in my Steam account).

I'm afraid to open either to check, so it will remain that way for the foreseeable future.

:(

I was ok until I built a gaming PC for the first time in ages. Now I have 5 years of PC games to catch up on.

hopefully it'll calm down after easter. On console I'm mostly just down to motorstorm and pixeljunk shooter 2, but on PC I want shift 2, witcher 2, crysis 2 (maybe), portal 2 (lots of 2s). Most of those are different enough in style that I can graze OK for a while.

I don't even remember the last game i bought before SC2. I pretty much only play it and all my consoles/handhelds are going pretty much unused (outside of occasionally playing some local gears multi with some friends).

Don't really have much time for many other games.

This thread makes me sad. I also have a huge backlog with mostly RPG games that are all at least past the halfway point. I actually was attempting to focus on 1 game per week or something but in the end I haven't touched hardly any games for about 2 weeks now.

I really need to face this monster that is my backlog. Since this is the start of a new week and this thread kinda put a little pep in my step I am going to actually attempt to play some.

Wish me luck!

For me it’s no longer a back log as such – in terms of being a pile of games I’m seriously considering getting around to playing, in some order or not.

My PSP ‘back log’ has become so substantial, it could probably keep me going for ages without another purchase, for either handhelds or console. Good times indeed.

About 25 PS2 games (mostly RPGs) plus about 15 PS3 games.

I thought I could catch up on it with having finished Onimusha, Legaia 2 and Silent Hill 2 but in the meantime I bought about 8 PS3 games (damn you, GAF and Amazon!).

Started with "Summoner" yesterday. Nice game but it gave me a headache due to the constant stuttering of the frame rate. Hope I can finish it at all...

Time to stop buying new games and clear the backlog. Then once you're done with that all the new games you wanted are now old games and half the price.

Very much this. My backlog isn't insane like some GAFers, but at the beginning of last year it was around 40 games, and I've gotten it down to where it's now around 23-24 games. I saved a ton of cash last year (and so far this year) by working on my backlog first and new games second. There's still a few games I buy day 1, but they are few and far between.

This one is easy. If you don't plan on playing a game you have on Steam, make a "Not Going to Play" category, put it in there, and forget about it. It's not part of your backlog. Ta-da!

Yeah, this helps a ton. I've taken it further though, and I'm using the following categories: "Have played", "Playing right now", "Want to play", "Maybe want to play" and "Don't want to play". Works great. When I'm looking for a new game I usually look in the "Want to play" category, since those are only quality games.

Stopped myself buying MGS4 and HeavyRain on saturday because I still have Infamous and Demons Souls to finish and GOW2/Goldeneye to start. Also got a 3ds on its way.

A few months ago I signed up to Lovefilm (Gamfly like company) since then no games have been put into my backlog pile, feels good.

I too am at this place (other than buying the odd one like DJ Hero 2). Feels good.

My backlog stretches back to the NES. :\ I'm currently playing through Phantasy Star on the Master System, along with Baldur's Gate.

My problem is I have this unwarranted phobia of any game I want becoming impossible to find in only a few months. Or really, really hard to obtain.

Even downloadable games! Though there is a little justification for it, such as getting Doom 1 on XBLA.

what I thought when demon soul came out.... it's still in plastic wrapping... somewhere...

The problem for me, if you want to call it that, are the addictive gives and/or "never-ending" games. Games like WoW, or DotA, or Team Fortress 2 or Civilization. I end up spending a lot of my time playing these games over and over, round after round, match after match, sometimes for years straight. When a game like this hooks you, you don't feel like playing anything else. This is when a backlog really becomes a problem.

For example, between ~2006-2008 I did nothing but play Final Fantasy XI with the occasional Team Fortress 2 mixed in. Once I finally quit, I had missed three entire years of gaming, including the first half of the current generation. I am still to this day trying to catch up and my backlog is somewhere near 100-120 games.

Yeah, i have more than 50 games I bought and still haven't touched any of them. That's not even counting games I bought from Stem when they were on sale. I've never been more busy :/

I decided that I only have 1 console game at a time, if I finish it or get bored of it, I sell it and put that money towards another game.

Mine isn't nearly as bad as others have posted. Probably about 10 - 15 games in my STEAM backlog that I'd like to get through sooner or later. Fortunately, the only new game I'm buying between now and the fall most likely is just The Witcher 2, so with a little luck I'll be able to get around to most of them. Unfortunately, the majority of my backlog is made up of RPGs I'd like to play through a second time and they eat up a ton of hours on average.

Could you go on and on please? Because that backlog makes mine look tiny so I hope you at least have a few more to go through.

I have er...well let's just say hundreds of games in my backlog, and I'm not helping matters much. I need to stop time or something.

If I buy something, I have to play it. I've nearly never bought a game, and then proceeded to not play it. If I can't play it, I won't buy it.

Basically, I have no backlog to speak of. Unless you count the free copy of Supreme Commander 2 I received, and never even took out of the shrink wrap.

I've got 116 unfinished games according to Backloggery. I only pick up new games these days if they're ludicrously marked down. Not including gifts, I've probably bought 5 or less titles at full price this console gen. It's the only way I'll get to play half these games.

If you buy a game at launch for $60 and you don't play it for 4-5 months you are literally pissing money down the drain.

Only buy a game if you plan on playing it in the next couple days.

My backlog just gets bigger and bigger. I'm actually pretty good at beating games but this gen games go on sale so fast that I'm always buying some 15-20 dollar game that gets added to the backlog.

I only buy a $60 game if I know flat out I'm going to play it day 1. But everything else is fair game.

This. I only buy games used now from gamefly, family video, or on Black Friday. If I'm buying a game day 1, it's because of the online multiplayer. I doubt I will buy another $60 game till Gears 3. Have about 20 titles in my backlog. And all were bought for under $20 at the time.

I'm strongly considering just taking my whole backlog to GameSpot and getting rid of it, then rebuying as I want to play things. I could get more money selling on eBay or something, but GS seems like it would be the easiest way to sell things in bulk, and honestly my backlog is so big I'd probably still come out ahead.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

My advise for clearing a backlog.

Stop reading about games and start playing them.
I'm sure half of gaf (like I used to) read more about the games on blogs and on gaf than taking the time out to play them.

My rule, at work I surf the net, at home I game during my free time.

In my backlog I have Dead Rising 2 and Fallout New Vegas, not sure if I really want to play them either...

All I have to finish right now is:

Beyond Good & Evil HD
Yakuza 3
Bully: SE (Xbox 360)

WAAAAY better progress than any generation before this one where I constantly had 5+ unfinished games at any given time.

My backlog has shrunk slightly because it's been a little while since I last bought a game. So far this year I've skipped on a few new games, the big one that come to mind right now is Killzone 3. I probably wont buy any games until July or August. I still haven't started Borderlands...

I don't have a huge backlog, I just have a huge list of games I need to get and play. What I do is make note of all the good games on notepad (there are hundreds on the list), then I just buy games from the list I feel like playing at the time. I also usually buy games that £15 or less as I am a cheap bastard. What is the point of buying a new game for full price when there are tons of old games I haven't played, by the time I finish the old games, the new games become dirt cheap and the cycle continues.

For me a game isn't finished until I platinum it or at least get all the single player trophies. I'm currently working on Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2, Black Ops, and NFSHP. Then I've got games I've barely touched like GT5, Star Ocean 4, and Dantes Inferno. On top of that I've got about 7-8 games still unopened including RDR, Dead Space 2, Bayonetta, Enslaved, and others I cannot remember.

I had a bad backlog when I finally bought my Super Nintendo last year and 5 games with it.I also had some PS2 and GC games I had to finish, like Final Fantasy XII and Metroid Prime 2.So I stopped buying games and cleared my backlog first. Now I have another little Backlog, with Spiderman 2 (GC),Legend Of Kay (PS2),Super Mario Allstars:Lost Levels (SNES,at 8-4 right now),DKC3 (SNES),Final Fantasy XII (PS2,2nd Playthrough) and I want to buy Rogue Galaxy (PS2) today.

YUP, I've got unopened games still left from last gen's $5 a game clearance at Circuit City. Also got Uncharted 1 and 2 as gifts about a year ago and they're still unfinished since I want to give them the time they deserve, uninterrrupted by other games. My backlog in terms of games I want to finish is pretty massive, but the sealed ones are no longer excusable...Bought MvC 3 and I'm officially on a buying freeze now. Just too much going on between the day job and working on a side project to justify buying any more games since my backlog likely has better options in it.
