Anyone get a copy of OPM yet?

Shock :o

Maybe I spoke too soon. Is there any other info on it? Other examples of "things they're using Cell for?

Many thanks again heavy.

I wouldn't go getting your hopes up too soon. Someone who attended that SOE event the other week didn't have too many flattering words to say about it:

"I hope they get a little more progress come E3 time if/when they show off a new video, but seriously, the game looks like a lowish-end PC game with a really, really nice draw distance. Stuff like the physics and good animation weren't in yet (I hope), but it was a pretty baseline version of Havok."

I'm not really getting my hopes up, just "really good" wasn't the first impression I was expecting to hear about how this game looks ;) I'll be pleasantly surprised if it does look in any way decent.

Just ran across the street and found it at a Borders.

Haven't had a chance to read the articles yet, just scanning pics...

Stranglehold and MoH:A are all pics we've seen before

UTL seems to be taking art style of new UTL PSP game coming out this month, but they only show one character (barbarian) in the shots. The visuals are definitely not pushing the envelope in any way, and could be argued from what I can see as being possible on current gen hardware.

Darkness is the best looking based on what's shown (too little of MoH and Stranglehold) and the one pic of a troll about to saw off a man's head with a handsaw is :O

I probably shouldn't have said "really good". I was reading and typing fast. I think it looks okay, but it's obviously far from done. There seems to be a lot of empty space which I'm not liking. There are 7 total pictures. 3 corridor shots, 3 room shots and 1 I'm not sure of. Art?

They look okay, but don't let me get your hopes up. As I said, I kind of like what I've seen of the style so far, but that's a personal preference and I'm sure there are plenty here who will hate it. That said, I do wish they had gone with a more realistic style. Oh, well.

The only other interesting technical bits I can glean from the UTL coverage is that they're claiming it'll be in 1080p (OPM says, unattributed to anyone from devteam) and the game producer semi-confirms online modes but can't discuss further at this time.

I'd almost expect it (1080p) if it's technically unremarkable. I think you'll see a number of games that don't really push the system, but flip on 1080p to soak up the power a little better.

No, at least not that we're aware of. Other games have been shown off at 720p. It sounds like Sony isn't mandating a minimum res, or if they are, it's 720p. If you have a 1080p set, though, PS3 should be able to upscale all games to that res, if you wish. There was the suggestion going around earlier that Sony was insisting all publishers show off PS3 games on 1080p sets (presumably with the output scaled to 1080p).

Not a publically stated one... whether or not they require a certain resolution or hdr/aa/etc from games is rather unknown. I imagine it'll be a case by case basis -- I'm not sure they care much about the small time games, just the big budget ones (which are likely to have the production values to get closer to pushing the system anyways).

I believe I heard minimum res is 720p, but I'm not 100% certain.

np. I missed your question back here. They also mention:

..."enemies that sport flesh over their frames will slump realistically thanks to rag-doll physics. And some of that Cell might be used to power fancy-shmancy effects, such as white-hot lightning or glistening great balls of fire, which you'll be able to hurl with the greatest of ease."

also

"In this case, we wanted to take that hack-n-slash gameplay and turn it up. It's more than just hitting the X button. Now there are combos and more visual flair and variety."

"Now you press the X button TWICE!!! We get it!"

Meanwhile, they're getting lambasted in the same issue for UTL 2 on PSP being unchallenging and not meriting the use of combos or special attacks since its easy to wade into a group of foes and win with just basic attacks.

2.5/5 for UTL 2 PSP, btw.

Starbreeze regarding online:

Andersson says that the game will definitely have an online component, but until they know more about the network structure, they can't say for sure what it will include. "We still don't know much about Sony's online plans," he says. "I think they have big hopes, and we know there's something coming, but we don't know to what extent that will be. We'll need to rethink the size of online whenever we get that info."

There's also a piece about Ubisoft Montreal and their Project Assassins...err...project. Its mostly a game design philosophy piece (building an engine from the ground up for the next gen rather than reusing current gen engine assets) and not much else. Does say they are putting some significant research in crowd interactions/dynamics and tying that closely to events in the game.

Is the game top-down or 3rd-person(UTLPS3)??
Looks most like the close-up camera position from CoN, maybe pulled just a little further out. Its 3rd person, slightly overhead.

Of course, no idea just how indicative these shots are of final in-game camera. May just be showing off the engine for the most part right now.

No, Dark Kingdom is an internal SOE project. There's a sidebar blurb specifically indicating that it's not a Snowblind game.

Well, if they know since February, it isn't in the magazine for March that's for sure. Mags are always 1-2 months old soup.

Is the new Driver any better than Driver 3 ?

I played the Xbox demo but it only consisted of me outrunning the cops and that was it. Graphics looked very clean, but it suffered from GTA LOD problems. If the game is like the demo it's the same shit with a new paintjob.

Sorry but what does "LOD" stands for?

Level of Detail. What hes complaining about is that from far away a building will be low-res and once you get a certain distance from the object the high-res version will pop-up right infront of you, its the same effect that was in Halo 2 and Killzone.

on God of War 2:

Representatives from Sony CEA have indeed confirmed that a God of War sequel is on the way, which shouldn't surprise anyone who finished the original game. Many of the unlockable extras found in God of War hinted heavily at a sequel, to the point that it seemed as though a follow-up was right around the corner. Indeed, it seems some aspects of the original game that the developer axed (and also featured in the extras), such as the Icarus wings for Kratos, have a strong chance of showing up next in the sequel -- we're anxious to see how much of that content makes the transition.

While the sequel will still be developed at Sony's Santa Monica studio, David Jaffe, who was lead designer on the original God of War, isn't the one directly in charge, since he's currently busy working on HL for the PSP. Whether or not this will affect the overall direction, gameplay mechanics, or other aspects of the game remains to be seen, but either way, God of War 2 has some very high expectations to live up to.

ok thanks ;)
Well, the draw distance was so unbelievably shitty in Driver3, i hope it's at least like San Andreas now and not a PS1 draw distance...

I suppose its an improvement from their PS2 EverQuest game. :lol

About the same level when you consider the hardware. EQ is one of the worst looking PS2 games out there, and this is already one of the worst looking PS3 games.

you were right, it is very ugly. SOE sucks so bad

Oi vey indeed. I read about God of War in this thread, and thought "Hey is that God of War 2 for PS2? But wait it looks worse than God of War." I think the red tights made me think of Kratos body paint. Then I notice it is a PS3 game and I'm like, ugh. Terrible, even at 1080P.

It looks ok....

if it's running at 1080p with 4aa

need larger screenshots.

edit: And actually by the looks of the size of the gauges in the corner it seems to point to the possibility of it being 1080p.
