I thought the first one lacked the DW magic. The controls seemed off, and for some reason it just seemed a lot more boring. What did they add to this one?
A lot of people felt that way, but the Samurai Warriors XL add-on changed a lot of minds. These DW-style games are basically all the same, but SW2 seems to be the most polished of all the games; the character animation has been improved and controlling them doesn't feel quite as stiff as previous games.
The addition of the special move button (replaces the useless arrow shooting) is quite welcome, and the look of SW2 is now much more colorful compared to the first game. The characters have also all been redesigned and look much better now (I thought SW1 had some incredibly cheesy designs). There are apparently 26 playable characters total; the last character you can unlock is
Basically, the game feels like more of the same to me, but also the most polished of all the Omega Force BEU games. I'm not a Dynasty Warriors expert, but from what I can tell, the changes include:
-Redone animation
-New special move button (characters can do various special moves; such as lay out remote mines!)
-Shop (you can buy new attributes, improve your weapon, buy new horses, etc.)
-No more loading time (haven't gotten to a castle stage, but I hear there's still no load times and when you go inside, it's all one huge stage connected with the outside)
-Improved character design (Stage design is better, too. Not so bland now)
I'm also liking the music; far better than past games, and the visuals are the best of any PS2 Omega Force game. It does look a little rough coming off of Sangoku Musou 4 Special for Xbox 360, but still very nice. Models look great.
Definately an enjoyable game, and might feel different enough to be worth a look if you're tired of Dynasty Warriors.
BTW Sangoku Musou 2 PSP comes out at March 23rd, same day as Sangoku Musou 4 Empires for PS2 and Xbox 360. I'm likely going to pass on Empires (Special Edition is enough!) and get SM2 for PSP.
