Anyone get their Dragon Quest VIII Demo Disc yet?

No keychain here either, and as far as I know I did everything right. I had my brother fill it out too and everything. Maybe they never got the keychains?

NO ONE has keychains right now, so stop complaining about it :P

I'm pretty sure the demo can't fit on a CD anyway

i saw it on torrent a while ago, it was only 250 megs compressed...that's one hell of a compression if it doesnt fit on cd

got my demo today. The graphics are really, really nice, probably even better than Celda, but the game fuckin put me to sleep.
Like me with all the other Dragon Warriors...

Meh, that not withstanding, I'm highly anticipating this title because it seems very different while still maintaining some of the stuff that made the series worth a look. Still waiting for my demo here.

I did end up receiving my demo cd today :)

I do like the heat-waves coming out of the fire. Nice little detail in the game. Most games I see that have fire in them don't radiate heat out from the flame, but DQ8 has that.

I like Munchie <3

My shipment came in today.

John Thomas
Frank Fumante
Sam Beckett
Al Calavicci
Kim Omara
Jay Stkiddin (say it outloud)
Al Bundy
Eddie Gonda
Edward Rawlings
Tom Jones
Franklin Dubios
Bill Crook
Ashton Edwards
Fred Middleton

Are all happy with their order.

The funny thing is, I've got to still have more coming, as I know I used my name, my mothers name, and my sisters name, as well as a variation or two of my name, and a few friend's names.

For crying out loud I hope someone reports you to SE. Your cheating the system. If I don't get a demo I'm blaming you!

The demo was ok, but damn the actually game better be a whole lot better. It left a boring taste in my mouth.

Yeah I started to fall asleep, but admittedly it's hard to just jump into an RPG with no fucking idea what's going on. Especially from a slower paced series.

I got mine, no keychain though. It's on DVD, it says on the disc. Silver is DVD and purple undersides were CDs wasn't it? Besides, you can tell if it's CD or DVD by listening to your drive, CD's tend to spin super fast while DVD's you don't hear it whirring as much.

Got my demo today.

I live in NE Pennsylvania.

Demo is a bit boring because you're starting off near the beginning, in Story Mode at least. Dragon Quest games always start out slow. Battle Mode gives you characters in the early teen levels, so try that out if you want to do more than just mash attack over and over.

I played through Story Mode this morning, and though it was slow I had a good time. Localization seems excellent, other than the annoying name changes for spells/monsters. Voice acting was pretty solid, as well.

I'm by no means a DQ fan, anyone will tell you. But DQVIII just seems sort of relaxing... maybe it's the Level 5 stylings coupled with the fact that it feels sort of cool that it's a nostalgia-based RPG in a time when we're switching to NEXT-GEN AWESOME.

I guess it's just a nice little stepping stone, a bit peaceful, lots of leveling, good visuals, silly irrelevant storyline and the polish the series painfully needed. I'm good to go for sure :)

Yeah, the beginning of pretty much every DQ game isn't too exciting..at least to me. Where you are in the Battle Mode is when/slightly after the game picks up, IMO.

It's much easier to be able to go around and look for stuff on the overworld map, you can actually fight stuff without having to go to an Inn every 5 minutes, and there are a couple of different places for you to go at that point if you want, ie skipping ahead to fight stronger stuff or get better items.

The Story Mode basically is the start of the game, which is a lot more rough than a little bit later/Battle Mode/rest of game in terms of non-grinding and going at your own pace.

I didn't find grinding that bad for what it's worth. I mean it's there, I got to level 7 or so but it didn't take long. The fact that I fought one of them Slimes with a knight on it leveled me up good early on :P

Just got it today too and I live in NE NJ. Tried out both the Story Mode and Battle Mode. I was very impressed with the visuals, they just looked incredible. Even though I was playing the DQ8 demo it got me excited for Rogue Galaxy more as well. Anyways, I found it to be enjoyable, and it has the same stuff as all the DQ games do. However, do they need to put that noise whenever the text comes up when speaking to someone? I don't even care if you couldn't put full voice-acting but that damn noise that comes up whenever text rolls across the screen is annoying.

kinda off topic, but is DQVIII still random encounter? Judging from the screenshots it seems like they've finally gotten rid of it ... and since the FF series is finally getting rid of that overused concept i'd think DQ would as well

In New Hampshire and I got it today. Played some of the story mode and started to fall asleep. I think I've outgrown RPGs and the "stories" and "gameplay" within.

Haven't gotten mine yet. If I don't get mine, I'm hunting you down, Ecrofirt. (edit--sorry UMM, saw your quote rather than Ecrofirt's OP) :lol

I like the orchestrated music in the NA version.

It makes the cheesy 70s music found in the Japan version not sound corny

Do the enemies show their hit points anywhere? .

I have six of these demos, one for pre-ordering, one from a magazine, and four from the website. I shall spread the Dragon Quest VIII joy and educate the masses.

Dragon Quest VIII is going to rock your November Amir0x.

Haha, I was wondering when someone would do that.

Seeing my face in one true snapshot is too glorious. I didn't know if you guys were...ready.

I hope so. I also hope the FFXII demo rocks my world, which was my main motivation to finally pay off my pre-order :P

I bet I'll finish the game before you.

yeah it just feels like "Generic Japanese RPG #2435". I know thats because DQ series inspired all the other jap-rpgs and what not, but still. It just has a "been here, done that a million times" feel. Still, i played it again today just to marvel at the graphics. They are excellent. Level 5 transfered the 2D art to 3D perfectly.

Haters have no place in this thread! DQ8 will be the best game of the generation when all is said and done!

Yes it still has random encounters. It probably never will (nor should, not every RPG has to be the same thing, they used to be nearly all random, but now they aren't. Viva choices).

There are visible monsters, but they are special ones.

? On the demo I got from Gamestop, the music was the exact same from the Japanese version, except the opening theme song sounded different.

Nope, enemies don't show their HP or any other stats openly, unfortunately.

I don't think it's fun at all. Above average at best. Empty, lonesome towns.

All one town you can go through in the demo? There are people in the houses, too. If you are expecting 25% of the townspeople to give you some sidequest to do, you're in for some disappointment.

It sure is mine..but that isn't saying much. :lol

East. It has a silver bottom. Why would they waste an entire dvd on a demo?

This isn't 1999, DVD are as cheap as CDs now, why bother with a CD. It's also possible the demo couldn't fit on a CD?

you aren't gonna actually play using that I hope.

yargh, I signed up on the first day the demo page was available but no demo yet. No slime keychain either. I actually already have 2, but you can never have enough, I need the red one! :).

I got 2 demos today..sent to the same address even though when I filled the thing out it said only 1 per address..oops. Dunno if I should open them. The Gamestop demo I got had a purple bottom.

The demos are sent out from Clear Lake, Minnesota for those wondering that haven't received their demos yet. The packaging is the same as the Gamestop demos.

I got the demo last week and it rocks hard. I can't wait for this game, but I hope the real thing has more control options.

BTW, this is going to sound weird, but the game reminds me of Quest 64 except in terms of quality.

Played the demo a ton and I really like it. Sure... it is OLD school with gloss, but I am kind of hankering for that type of game right now. May take me forever to beat (since I don't have the time to level like I used to) but I will peck away at it :)

It probably won't have many more options than in the demo, and if you mean customizable controls, probably not.

Uh oh, Quest 64? *cue Gaimeguy/mdm*

For those that are playing/replaying the demo, if you want something to try (and good practice for honing up your looking around abilities), give this dead topic a try:
