Anyone here a fan of Bushido Blade?

One of my all time favourite PS1 games. Came out in my freshman year in college and me and my roommates were all obsessed with the game. I still play it from time to time. Great game all around.

I loved the original game so much. I played it recently at a friends house and it holds up surprisingly well gameplay wise.

I'll never forget when I first played it. A friend of my uncle brought the game to our house. We played a couple of rounds when I discovered how to consistently get one hit kills with the broadsword. Round after round I would destroy them and watch them get more frustrated. This lasted about two hours as the tried to come up with some kind of strategy to beat me. Looking back it's really funny to think about grown men getting upset by being beaten by a kid that was about 20 years younger than them.

It was incredible, and still hasn't been matched in many ways. Incapacitating your opponents was fun as hell, and the open environment was so impressive. One of those games that made you dream of the great things to come, only to discover everyone went in other directions.

Yep, one of my favorite PSX games, way ahead of it's time. That final boss in Bushido Blade 2 that would teleport when you went for a hit was so annoying :P

Such a shame the series ended abruptly and we didn't get a similar game in so many years. The closest ones I can think of are the Deadliest Warrior games on PSN/XBL.

Light Weight also made Kengo for the 360 that was considered a spiritual successor to BB but the game was poop iirc

Bushido Blade is one of the best games of all time. I'd kill for a new one.

The game you're talking about is this

It felt more like a tradition fighting game rather than the open arena. It was fun from what I can remember, but I didn't like it as much as Bushido Blade.

Here I am!

Loved them, expecially the 2nd episode.

On the first Xbox there was Kengo which was... uh... awful.

As a surprise, the nearest games you can try in terms of gameplay are the two chapters of The Deadliest Warrior on PS3 and Xbox 360. Realistic movements, different weapons and styles, one-hit kills, very tense gameplay.

Try them, they are not even nearly as bad as the review scores suggest.

Love me some bushido blade and still play it from time to time sporting my Iai stance. Like the above posters, Kengo was a major let down because I was under the impression it was the successor to Bushido Blade and it's not as good. Deadliest Warrior is a bag of fun especially local co-op with friends.

To a lesser extent the only other game I can think of is Way of the Samurai but it's a more open rpgish version. Nothing quite like Bushido blade unfortunately.

Telling someone new to the game that pressing select was an important part of the swordplay was the best.

Lol that Deadliest Warrior game looks fun, kind of like one of those early PS1/N64 fighters.

And it is!

Again, it is the only game I tried which send the same vibes as the Bushido Blade games.

Of course, it is not extremely refined, ok. Yet, gameplay's the king, right? :D

I'd really like a faithful recreation. Chanbara-themed games, in general, could use some attention.

I remember being absolutely blown away by part 1. Chasing an opponent down through a bamboo forest then slicing him dead where he stood.. it was pretty epic. Especially back in those early PS1 days. Part 2 lost me a little, as the stages were smaller and I think it went to more modern times.

Would love a release as a PS1 classic. Why hasn't this happened yet SE?

Would also love an HD reboot. It has the potential to be great if handled correctly.

Did BB come with a demo? I remember enjoying the game but I can't shake the feeling the only reason I bought it was for a demo included.

Loved Bushido Blade so much. Someone showed me how to do the "swap trick" on the Playstation and I went out and bought Tobal #1 just to get the FFVII demo. I didn't give a shit about Tobal, but as soon as I played it I fell in love with it. After that I pretty much immediately imported whatever Square released. A lot of them I didn't really get into, but Bushido Blade was one of my favorites. Not too long ago I stumbled across the ratty old sheet of paper I had translated the menus onto. Meeeeemories...

If only Sony/Sqeenix would collaborate on a Bushido Blade game for Morpheus. The POV mode in BB was pretty neat, if a bit janky.

Joining the chorus, Bushido Blade was amazing/innovative/thematically interesting, though I have not played it in a long time. Patiently awaiting the day someone either revives the series with a new entry, creates a worthy spiritual successor, puts together an HD remake or even just release the original on PSN for the west.

Some of the best, most entertaining fights were the ones where you'd both be injured and rolling and flopping around on the ground trying to sit up on your knees to deliver a killing strike. One match had me and my friend trying to kill each other for over thirty minutes. Great times and one of the very few games which knew that the drama of the fight lived inside of those tense moments of stillness with each fighter maneuvering around and within a few feet of each other, but not actually devolving into trading endless series of strikes and combos.

I loved the first one so much! I played a demo of it at a store (ToysRUs?) and bought the playstation within the week so I could get that game. My brother and I would play it for hours at a time. The second one wasn't nearly as awesome as the first, after I bought 2 and played it for a while I ended up returning to 1.

I would buy this on release day if it would come to US PSN, I'd play the hell out of it on my Vita.

There should be more fighters that challenge the rules of traditional fighters, really (in addition to traditional fighters!). But sadly not many people celebrate when a fighting game deviates from the norm :(

Yes I loved Bushido Blade. Just the random and realistic aspect of it was so appealing to me. I hope someday that someone makes something inspired by it.

I played the demo of this and thought it was alright. It was kinda fun. The turn offs for me at the time was the TV show branding and generic characters compared to something like Soul Calibur. The last one, I have mixed feeling about.

The second one (Legends) has historical figures as fighters (Alexander the Great, Vlad the Impaler, Braveheart etc) rather than generic characters.

Bushido Blade was indeed ahead of its time. The concept of patience, wow. The pace of the battles, the different weapons, locations- it really felt like you got yourself into a sword fight for your life and you needed to take your time, control your shaking hands, par attacks, and kill that bastard chasing you through the bamboo.

A measured, methodically paced sword fighter in Edo period Japan.. This needs a remake.

Keep it true. Don't goofy anime-fy the characters. No Dead or Alive with swords. Just improve the fight engine, keep character models serious (again,no watermelon bouncing boobs with school girl outfit), make amazing fight arenas with places to hide and run in all 3 dimensions; not a flat arena.

Those large arenas felt like levels to explore.
Now, with online MP, we could have large levels with 6+ samurai hunting each other. Awesome.

Characters take damage and it shows in their animations and fighting ability. Kills can come quick like real life. Man, this would be beautiful now.

It's all fun and games until some asshole starts stabbing people in the foot with the rapier.

Wait, that was me.

Just an FYI for folks that the first game is available as a PS1 classic on the Japanese PSN store.

I feel like you may be mis-remembering the original cast & setting. Like the Zorro guy and the neon-samurai secret boss, haha.

Nidhogg for PC is about the only thing i've played recently that has had me in that competitive Bushido Blade mood.

I played that game the day I started my first job weird how great games can attach to memories. Great game wish we could get a remake.

Nidhogg is fantastic and always felt like something from the mid-80s, to be honest. Still, the sense of finality and measured pace of BB creates tension that goes beyond the rush and desperate feel of that game.

Do you like load times? This is load times the game. I loved the show but the load times in the 360 version I had killed any fun that this game could provide.

Back on topic, I loved BB1. I never beat the 100 enemy challenge.

The load times were long, not tragic. The "rematch" function helped a lot. :D

I never got to experience the secret boss...the one you get by being honourable and not drawing your sword first and also not getting hit.

It was fun though

I had it, but was never really good. I remember being able to throw sand in people's eyes and being able to slice the bamboo trees. I also remember reading about a secret fight if you jumped down a well, but couldn't ever execute it.

I liked the FF7 Demo that came with Bushido Blade..

...but BB was pretty damn awesome in itself.

You're thinking of Tobal No 1 with the FF7 demo. Good game, but the sequel was godly (kind of the reverse of BB, where the sequel lost a lot of what made the original special).

If I remember properly, they've got different costumes in versus mode. Traditional Japanese stuff. Hakama and geta and so on.

I think you could choose from two costumes at the character select screen.

EDIT: Actually that would be BB2 I'm thinking of...

BB1 is where it's at. The sequel and Kengo on the PS2 didn't do it for me, but I had so much fun with the original at friends' houses. We'd sometimes put on cinematic, pulse-pounding songs from our computer or stereo while playing to add to the intensity. Chasing my friend across a feudal Japanese-rooftop while Dragula blasted from his stereo system is a memory I'll probably take to the grave.

I'd kill to see a revival of this series or at least a spiritual successor.

Only played the first one, and loved it.
Put in countless hours with my brothers.

I don't think the second one ever came to Europe?

I only played the first 1 a couple times back in the day and thought it was awesome.

Why aren't these on PSN?

Why so many PS1 & PS2 games are on JP PSN store but not other regions is one of the great mysteries of 7th gen. But BB1 is there if you want it, you'll need a JP account and a points card.

It was ok. Are there any high level YouTube gameplay videos out there? As revolutionary as people say the gameplay was I never felt in control of anything. Sometimes a blow would result in loss of a limb being usable, sometimes it's a death blow, sometimes it just drew blood (which was basically no effect). The matches felt like button mashing hoping the next blow you landed counted as a kill.
