How can the 360 be seen as anything but a disappointment? It may be due to short supply, but that doesn't mean it's not a disaster.

Demand was huge before Christmas, and they failed to come close to meeting it. How much of that pent-up demand has already dissipated? How much longer can MS drag this out until it's too late and they've squandered any advantage an early lauch could have provided.

E3 is basically the beginning of the PS3 countdown. The 360 has a couple months to build consistent momentum to carry them through Sony's launch. It looks to me like MS is gonna get buried.

They still have quite a few months before the PS3/Rev hit to build up a lead here in North America. If they can get the production/shipping things worked out this month for March they'll be ok. PS3 isn't going to come along and suddenly make the 360 stop selling. PS3 will probally have it's own shortage problems when it hits, so the 360 can take advantage of that.

They sure did fudge up the first few months though. The lead they'll have isn't going to be anywhere near what they had hoped.

Well they dont seem to be selling for over retail on ebay anymore. In my eyes I would say that is a sign that demand has slowed.

Does that mean we will actually get sales numbers? Though not surprising to see Animal Crossing up there because it had huge shortages over Christmas.

Then again, the PSP has another GTA coming this year, and there are other hits out waiting in the wings, such as GT4, Splinter Cell, This year's EA lineup (Which do well on PSP but not so good on DS), and more.

I'm honestly shocked by the inability to stock the system. It may not be that unusual, but for a company banking on early adopters, to fall so short of demand is truly disappointing. We'll never know the exact number, but I'd wager that MS's production problems have cost them serious console sales ... maybe close to what they've actually sold. (I mean, those people who WOULD HAVE bought one if they could but now either lack the money or have lost interest).

Do you think they'll need a Halo-caliber system seller to make up that lost ground?

It's a menage a trois -- everybody gets some love in this month's Top 10. PS2 on top, though.

Call of Duty 2 is selling at such a ridiculous pace on 360. The game has become such an amazing system seller. I wouldn't be surprised if the final tally of sales ends up around 3 million sold. I am shocked at how well the game is selling on 360. MS should perhaps go for console exclusitivity for Call of Duty 3.

Looks like DOA4 perhaps won't be as big of a seller as DOA3 ... perhaps time for Tecmo to reconsider where they put their games.

Only other place to go is the Rev, which might not be a bad idea considering Itagaki's motivations.

Maybe if they put out a worth while game that was worth paying ÂŁ45 for?

Wow, you can tell a lot from just one month's worth of sales. We should probably ignore when it was the number 1 game in the UK weekly charts and when it was the number 1 game in the France weekly charts as well.

1 360 CALL OF DUTY 2

It wasn't exactly a monster month but it still counts. It took Xbox 17 months for a game to place number 1 on the NPD monthly chart(March 2004, Ninja Gaiden).

Call of Duty 2 is doing amazingly well. Good for it.

Nice to see Animal Crossing and Mario Kart hangng in there. I bet both are pretty close to 100k? Considering LCS is confirmed to be over that mark.

Nintendogs combined?

Nah, not yet atleast. They just need some high quality games to come out, and it looks like March will do that with Ghost Recon, Oblivion, Battlefield 2, Fight Night, Far Cry, etc. They just need to get Premium's on the shelves and in bulk fast. They're shooting themselves in the foot with this shortage.

MS is saving a lot of the big games for the fall, which is the time when they'll need them.

XBOX 1 had to deal with a PS2 that was hitting its stride software-wise (GTA3 in 2001, Vice City in 2002).

I'll echo the CoD2 sentiments...wow. Seems like the 'Halo' of the Xbox360 launch...

Oh and conflicted about AC:WW, on the one hand < 100k is awesome, go US gamers go! On the other hand...its still too high on what it did last month ;)

yep yep. this should echo what i said about nintendogs being the DS killer app and not mario kart.

(not in my opinion of course. mario kart is a million times better.. i just mean in sales)

That's actually a damn good number. It was a pretty strong month for the 360 (relative to it's small userbase and especially considering how crappy software sales overall were).

Basically, it wasn't that far from the PSP and NDS and it has what, less than 1/4 of their installed bases.

I predict (that's really a prediction, I have no clue about the real numbers) total software sales (all plattforms) to be about 7.5 million units.

Thats a damn strong performance from Nintendogs. I wonder how much it actually sold? Surely less than the DS hardware for the month? Still, the top 3 DS games are over 300K(seeing as Mario Kart and Animal Crossing are over 88K each), must be the typical story where the rest of the library lags whereas the psp sees more consistent sales throughout its library of games. NFS is also doing poor, ps2 version is down 38% compared to last year. I wander when/if Sony will cut the price on the ps2? Maybe in a couple of months just when the 360 is getting into a decent situation in terms of stock levels?

Will all those who predicted that Nintendogs would be Nintendo's next Pokemon please raise your hand. *waves flags*

Whats that like 5 Million worldwide now? Sony has to ask themselves how the dogz can outsell the highest selling console franchise of the last 4 years in portable form. I must admit that I never expected LCS to crack a million though. I'm very surprised it has done this well on a portable.

PSP outsold DS for the month of January despite Nintendogs, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing. In hardware and software. Looking at software numbers PSP software numbers are ahead of DS software numbers for the month with these blockbusters included. Not sure what more Sony needs to accomplish, outselling the market leader in both hardware and software for the month despite the competition having some blockbuster sellers would be considered OK in my book.

Sony doesn't have to do anything except for worry about the PSP. I haven't seen the two portable systems having a ton of overlap. The handheld market is almost the perfect market situation at the moment. Two different systems with different capabilities, both doing well, with entirely different software catalogs.

That is confirmation right there. If it was hardware 360 would be much much higher than Gamecube and Xbox.

I wonder if we could find out around how much total software was sold for the month....
