I was too young to afford or have one, but I remember seeing guys just like with their ghetto blasters.

Years later I got one for personal use. I didn't have the swag to pull of carrying it like the guy above.

But I always loved the sliver/chrome aesthetic.

I'm thinking of getting a few off eBay just for display purposes.

Anyone else remember that era? Did you have one?

My radio, believe me, I like it loud
I'm the man with a box that can rock the crowd
Walkin' down the street, to the hardcore beat
While my JVC vibrates the concrete
I'm sorry if you can't understand
But I need a radio inside my hand
Don't mean to offend other citizens
But I kick my volume way past 10
My story is rough, my neighbourhood is tough
But I still sport gold, and I'm out to crush
My name is Cool J, I devastate the show
But I couldn't survive without my radio
Terrorising my neighbours with the heavy bass
I keep the suckas in fear by the look on my face
My radio's bad from the Boulevard
I'm a hip-hop gangster and my name is Todd
Just stimulated by the beat, bust out the rhyme
Get fresh batteries if it won't rewind
Cos I play everyday, even on the subway
I woulda got a summons but I ran away
I'm the leader of the show, keepin' you on the go
But I know I can't live without my radio

Those things were rad.

Apparently you can't call them ghetto blasters anymore though. People get mad. Boom box is still ok.

Hell yeah! That pic brings back some memories. Is he rockin' Cazals???

Edit: And of course I had one! Along with shelltops and Lees and the Le Tigre shirt. My jean jacket had a piece on the back that my uncle did when he used to roll with Dez in the Bx. Hahaha Just noticed he's rocking the name buckle too!! Damn. *Nostalgia Intensifies*

Far newer than the examples in this topic, but I still have and use this one:

Caught the portable outdoor music era way later but

and a much older version of

held it down pretty well. Bro, you like... plug your Discman into the backpack!!!

I sure loved mine as a kid... 6th grader or so. It was like, the first really nice thing I owned. And mine had a double tape deck so I could copy tapes for my friends or make mix tapes. So I'd always tape stuff off the radio and them make awesome play list tapes. AND it had an aux in that you could record from, so I would hook my dad's turntable into it and turn vinyl records into tapes.

Edit: Here it is… hell yeah, I loved that thing:

No thanks. It is bad enough with people playing music through their cellphones on the train without headphones let alone a ghetto blaster.

Nah man that shit's obnoxious. Now people have speakers in their backpacks and stuff. I don't wanna hear your shitty music.

SS2 obviously knows what's up. Nothing nostalgic about annoying whole neighborhoods.

;p

You were bothered by them as kids? strange.

The one guy I knew who carried about a ghettoblaster pretty much just listened to 2 Live Crew.
So no, not really.

Ghetto blaster? I've never heard of the Boombox being referred to as that.

But to answer your question, no i'm not nostalgic for it. Shit, just hearing peoples music through their headphones irritates me.

I'm not so nostalgic for the boom box but I am nostalgic for the music of that era. Early LL Cool J, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, etc. Great stuff.

I still have one of these - from late 80s, I think. It has stereo inputs on the back so I can hook up a CD/MP3 player. It sounds awesome with the 3D Bass Switch turned on (red button). It's surprisingly light for its size and it was probably meant to be carried around.

No fucking thank you. Wear headphones.

most of the time, boomboxes were used among willing crowds( this was back when going outside was really popular). Only a few times would you have some attention seekers blasting them out in random public. I don't compare them to cellphone blasters, because I have seem a lot more of those than I have annoying boom box users.

That shit is awesome. Then you would put it down the parking lot and everybody would show off their dance moves like in the movies. What do people dance to nowadays, Lana del rey? Lmao

Nah. Portable music devices are truly a thing that went from ridiculous to perfect in a short period of time.
