Anyone play the beta and not getting Destiny?

Destiny is generating mega hype especially here. I'm quite bewildered. Is it a bad game? Certainly not. Having read a lot on Destiny, past gaming experiences, and most importantly after playing the beta, I think I have a good indication on what type of game it is and what it aspires to be. Do I believe it warrants its hype? I'm quite amazed on the traction it is receiving here. First, for its pros, the game has great graphics and high attention to detail. I love that. Puddle spots with reflections and the other things like cracked walls, graffitti are in intentional areas with lighting used creatively in the environment e.g., the Moon level shows the fantastic use of lighting. The particle effects look great and I wish they used smoke more because it looks good. The game is well polished. An example, I like how white, green, and purple loot is easily identified with the same colors beside your weapons in the HUD although I feel the loot should be much more easier to identify. The concept is inviting. It's an online world meant to explore and play with your friends.

The pros are really good. Almost too good. The polish with great graphics, creative scifi/space environments make the game highly appealing to play and explore with friends, I too thought I was going to love this game and was looking at limited editions then I began to learn what the game finally is, and Destiny suffers from what I will call MMO syndrome. It's Destiny meets World of Warcraft. First perhaps not a minus as it is what the game intends is that this is not meant to play by yourself. In fact, the game is really boring to play by yourself like any MMO made e.g., WoW, Borderlands, etc. But okay, no problem to those who know this but I wouldn't suggest it to those who are expecting a rich single player experience and story.

Every mission is similar, so similar that I think the full retail game will follow the same concept. You will say: Dude, it's only a beta, there leaving out much of the story. Yes, I know but reading much of Destiny and what games it is similar to, I think I can draw conclusions from other MMOs. The game feels MMOlike, again to nearly almost every MMO made, SwG, Everquest, etc. Missions go like this: Get mission, go to location, kill enemies, have Ghost scan, meet a different mob/boss than ever before, get loot. The end and recycle. You can repeat the missions at any time. Even the Explore missions, which I hoped to be different is this and all of these missions are never ending like a MMO, so it feels like a chore rather than following a good story.

I want to give it the benefit of the doubt that it is the beta but the way the game is structured, I have a feeling the game is going to similar to this. Reading up on it including Destiny forums, for example, seeing the Moon feels like it will be a new coat of paint with similar missions, just new landscapes and different factions/enemies unique to the Moon to fight, and the same goes for Mars and the other planets. And based on Destiny interviews, important to any MMO, they seem to be emphasizing the loot a lot, and how creative it can make you look in the game to add style.

How is the PvP? It's Bungie, it's going to be awesome! Unfortunately, the PvP imo is very uninspiring. It is so disappointing coming from Bungie. Rather than being highly strategic relying on map control, control of power weapons, high level of teamwork, and skill like Halo, and mirroring classic PC shooters like Quake, Tribes, but also offering game types fun for everyone (Halo), it is more of just an arena of people running around shooting and using abilities. It seems uninspiring, bland, and tacked on. Nades can kill you in one hit. Abilities can kill you with one hit (say goodbye to a Warlock overcharged ability). A weapon can kill you in one hit in the Iron Banner. I guess it is no surprise when I've heard Destiny saying the game is meant for everyone and they felt they catered to the hardcore too much in Halo (completely wrong btw).

Conclusion:

At first I was really enjoying it and saw great potential in its polish but the game got tiring and is not a deep experience I don't intend to keep repeating in the retail. Perhaps Bungie knows this and know what they're doing. Bungie intends to finally bring a MMO type game to consoles and combining it with the most popular genre rather than be a Halo. In sum, I think Destiny suffers from MMO syndrome and a lot of people are confused to what it is whether it's a shooter, a cooperative game, or what, and wanted to know if anyone else felt the same, or perhaps now will understand more on what the game is. I know a lot of console people think Destiny is revolutionary who have not played MMOs before not being PC gamers. My ultimate thought is Destiny is trying to be a MMO suffering from what is all in MMOs, which is a lack of variety in missions and missions/quests with a lot of repetitiveness. In Destiny's case, go to earth, fight mobs, loot, go to Moon, fight new mobs, repeat. Go to Venus: repeat but different landscapes, different enemies, and of course different loot.

And dont say, it's just a beta. I know. It's clear Destiny uses PC MMOs as inspirations, and from my experiences of playing them and reading, is my thought of the game and maybe I'm wrong. It feels exactly like MMOs like Everquest and WoW. You have new worlds but raids in WoW or "strikes" in Destiny where you grind to get new gear. In Destiny, you are grinding by battling enemies and new kinds found in different worlds similar to how WoW and Everquest have new enemies in different worlds, and added ones.

I really liked what I played of the Destiny beta, but it being always online is a deal breaker in terms of me actually buying it

I didn't read your insanely huge wall of text OP but I'll answer the topic title: Yes, I played the beta a couple times and while it's good, it doesn't interest me enough to purchase right at launch. I'll probably get it in a sale or when the price is 30$ or so.

I enjoyed the beta, but it didn't convince me to get the retail. Not at full price, anyway. If someone gave it to me for free, I'd totally play it - but it's not really doing anything interesting enough for me to want to buy it.

I may buy it and play it, but if so, it will be more because there's nothing else out in September that I'd even remotely want to play than because Destiny is a great game.

That's why I posted a conclusion section ;)

Really enjoyed the alpha, played a little bit of beta, the season pass and one area per planet turned me off. Certainly won't buy this now especially with P4U2 coming at end of August.

I was going to buy it before the Beta and I'll still be buying it now after the Beta.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned about end game content but Bungie haven't lead me wrong yet.

Look at the "Destiny will only have one level per planet" thread, tons of people in there who played the beta that aren't getting it.

I'm not getting it after trying it out during the alpha and beta. The game lacks a certain wow-factor that I need in order to purchase at full-price.

I really liked the Beta, and the Alpha, but... I dunno, it just feels very grindy and the universe isn't pulling me in, I'll skip this one out.

It was fun enough, but it didn't click with me as a must have. I might buy it once I'm really desperate for a game to play on the ps4, but if I have other things to play I probably won't get it.

I wasn't planning on buying it right away before the beta and I'm still not planning on buying it right away after the beta. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the beta but I just didn't feel wowed by it. I'll probably buy it at some point but not at launch.

Not getting it.

I wasn't that impressed, the PvP was the main aspect I was interested in and i'm not a fan.
I also can't buy it on principle of it being always online.

A lot of people are thinking about Destiny right now. Like you have mentioned, what the beta revealed was some story and some gameplay.

I do not think all has been revealed just yet.

In terms of story, the beta revealed more than the alpha, and I think now there is more to come.

Explore is not so impressive, and there just does not seem like enough content to grind at.

The art direction made me pause several times, especially on the moon. I think this game will deliver, but what the final build will reveal in terms of story and content, I feel has been somewhat hidden.

I am looking forward to it.

Definitely not getting it right away, not until we actually know how much base content is in the game. Although I probably won't even get it even later down the line, the problem with games like Destiny and Borderlands and what not is there's no level scaling whatsoever meaning if you pick it up late you'll always be behind your friends and have to catch up by either playing solo, forum members who you might not know all that well, or with randoms. Borderlands at least is all separate game sessions so you can at least communicate with randoms via voice chat (or text on PC) but no such thing for Destiny. For being a co-op game it sure is restrictive when it comes to playing with different people when you're all not at level cap.

Nice text, OP. I'm kinda with you. I feel like, even if you don't compare it to MMOs (in my case for not having much experience with them) and instead compare it to Halo and Borderlands, it feels like something that is trying to mix both but is not nearly as good as any. I wouldn't say PvE is bad, but eh, don't really care, the reason for me to play PvE is to get new loot for PvP, which I actually really enjoyed (aside from the awful moon map with that fucking batmobile) and would be enough reason for me to buy, but that will depend on how much I enjoy playing The Last of Us' multiplayer. My little backlog can't be this huge, so I can't juggle between many multiplayer games, which means that, if I like The Last of Us enough to be my "main" multiplayer game on PS4, I don't think I need Destiny at all.

I was actually excited to get it after the alpha, but now, even though I enjoyed the beta a lot too, I'm not so sure I want it. At least day one I definitely don't.

Really enjoyed the alpha, played a little bit of beta, the season pass and one area per planet turned me off. Certainly won't buy this now especially with P4U2 coming at end of August.

Already??? Can't wait!

Another destiny thread? This couldnt go in the Pros/Cons one or the Not enough Content one or the beta withdrawel one.......

EDIT : I am definetely buying the game after the beta, never played so much of a game in 4 days for a long long time , and whilst i started getting a little burnt out on the same map over and over i think another 3-4 maps will be more then enough to keep me going for a few months (obviously not going to play it as fast as teh 4 day window).

I am hoping that they expand it quickly and cheaply but im a realist and i know they are wanting significant returns on their investment. I see tons of potential in the game but i also am going in with tempered expectatinos on the story e.t.c e.t.c

Reminds me a lot of Phantasy Star Online 2 in its set up.

That said I enjoyed it but not enough to plop down money on this thing. It seemed exactly like a world they will want to add on to through dlc for several years... which is the problem. Something about the beta screamed "we will add more here, and here, and here, and there, through $$$" and not "this is a complete experience and we will add on to it in the future.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but I still plan on picking the game up.

I didn't read your insanely huge wall of text OP but I'll answer the topic title: Yes, I played the beta a couple times and while it's good, it doesn't interest me enough to purchase right at launch. I'll probably get it in a sale or when the price is 30$ or so.

Nothing inherently wrong with walls of text. And generally you should read the OP before posting in it anyway.

While I played the beta for a good amount of time I just couldn't get really into it. I really like these types of games but this one didn't click for me.

To those who keep posting, "This is another I don't like Destiny thread" "I don't like it thread", read the post.

The thread title is a poor one and my bad. I rushed it. It should be something like "This is what I think Destiny is..."

The purpose of the thread is to aim the discussion on what you think about the type of game Destiny , after a lot of confusion on what it is, not another rant of "I don't like" and how if affected your thoughts of the game after playing the Alpha and Beta, its perception, e.g., "Do you think it's still a shooter?" (I finally realized it's trying to be a MMO) and if it deserves the hype, your purchase... My opinion is it suffers from MMO syndrome, which is a lot of things but repetitive quests/missions is one and a reliance on loot.

Having read a lot on Destiny, past gaming experiences, and most importantly after playing the beta, I think I have a good indication on what type of game it is and what it inspires to be.

Aspires?

The walls, winds, smoke, graffiti., etc are used to high polish feeling you're in a world.

U wot m8?

I want to give it the benefit of the doubt that it is the beta but the way the game is structured, I have a feeling the game is going to similar to this.

Huh?

I switched my pre-order to Last of Us. Coming from the beta, I felt it was a well polished game, but Bungie still haven't convinced me as to what this game will be. I understand its leaning more towards action FPS RPG with a dash of MMO to it, but the MMO elements aren't done well (where is the character trading if gear is so dependant?) which really hurts it for me.

Coming mainly from a PC background, console FPS' also hurt my brain, and I just suck massively at them. I also fear that while the story was interesting, it won't keep me locked away and wanting to continually play it over and over. I got bored of the zones because they wanted to be open and explorable, but nothing was ever given for exploring, something I sorely miss from titles like Guild Wars 2 who gave you reason to walk off the beaten path.

Don't get me wrong, Destiny is great game, but it doesn't seem to be for me. I may get it later down the track, but right now it still hasn't convinced me to dedicate a few good hours on it when I've got many other games (and MMOs) that offer far more content.
If people do not want the game why they have to bring this topic to discussion again and again ?

When did discussing games become a bad thing?

I played the Alpha and Beta and I won't be buying the game. Everything about the game feels barebones and shallow to me. The world feels empty with nothing to do but boring repeatable side-missions, and the skill system looks to be about as boring. The game feels like it's going to be shoving paid DLC in my face for years and I really don't like that.

Liked it for the first couple hrs, but after the honeymoon phase wore off it's not for me. Missions were boring and repetitive. Idk if I'm crazy but it felt like the enemies spawned in the same spots over and over again.

People complaining about walls of text and bashing OP without reading any of it.....is this really GAF?

Anyway, the beta was a blast with my friends, but I can't see myself playing it long-term, especially with all the games coming out in the fall. Something about shooting aliens in the head for like 10 minutes while watching their health slowly go down makes me feel bored, just like it did with Borderlands. There's also the question of how much content there is going to be which is important in a game like this. Right now, it's a no-buy for me until I get some of my other awaited titles out of the way.

I'm probably not buying. The beta was really limited and nothing I've heard about the final game gives me confidence that it'll be any different. Might buy it on the cheap later, though.

I can see where you're coming from. For me though, it's something to get by until November with the MCC and something to go to if my Halo game is off. I did enjoy the Beta, but I can definitely see the fatigue coming in if it was the only game I played.

You people, I fucking swear. That was probably the best beta experience to come out in, oh I dunno...FOREVER. I'm not usually a shooter guy, but that was good shit.

I will buy it with one big reservation...I'm setting myself up to get hammered with DLC for years to come and I don't like it. I will get my $60 worth out of it though, by God.

If people do not want the game why they have to bring this topic to discussion again and again ?

So it's only okay to bring up the topic when someone likes the game?

In either case, I'm on the fence. I will be staying away from PvP if I do. Not going to get it Day 1 but watch and wait for gamer reviews.
