it's funny that even we had a ton of those aol CDs and you couldn't even get AOL here. no idea how they made it here, i always wondered what AOL even was. it was only just a year ago ago when i found it out, now all the "for AOL users do it this way"-texts in emails make sense.

Going by your avatar, is "here" = "England?"
Since, AOL UK used to be a pretty awesome thing.
And then it was sold to Carphone Warehouse =(

(Of course, "here" could be somewhere else. I'm sure AOL sent them to loads of unnecessary places :Ăľ)

Too bad it's not a 3.5" Floppy

I loved when AOL was sending out floppies, I'd just format them and reuse them. I got so many free disks that way.

Shame they switched CD-ROM instead of CD-RW (I know, no chance they would do that, but I wish), so they were utterly useless to me, except to maybe stick in a microwave for 3 seconds to get a lightshow.

Agreed, those were actually useful.
Sadly, I never got too many of them.

But then, we signed up from an AOL 2.5 Floppy, so they probably didn't feel the need to send us anymore.

Omg, downloading AOL right now since I'm so bored. Flashback to the 90s time. :D

Woo-hoo!

Seriously, considering virtually everyone here has a separate connection already, which means they can use AOL for free, there's no reason not to*!

(I mean, aside from the lack of stuff to do there now... >.>)

Quiet, sonny :Ăľ

(Just kidding, of course <3)

Sadly, the hard drive of my 2nd computer died, and that was before I was in the habit of backing up stuff, so I only have things saved back to mid-1999 =(

:)

My first AOL account dates back to the mid-2000's, back when everyone I knew still used Instant Messenger.

That I'd like to see a resurgence of popularity in.

Omg "Welcome, you got mail" made it worth it. Holy crap people are still on AIM complete with away messages. o.o

At this point, I feel I should toss in a disclaimer - I don't own stock in AOL, Verizon, Time-Warner, or any other company involved in anything to do with this (heck, I don't own stock in anything), and don't work for or with them or anything either.
I'm just strange :Ăľ

I have 8100 emails in my inbox.. and only 6 in my spam o.o

No. No, you're not.
If what works for you, works for you. Keep doing it. Nobody is gonna stop you.

To be fair, mail on AOL 5.0 has issues with displaying embedded HTML correctly.
I'm usually fine with that though, since the messy HTML usually just gets in the way of me reading the email.

It always annoyed my wife, when we were dating, back around 2002 and such, that she would send me all these "cute" things in emails, which I never got/wouldn't display as intended for me.
I remember she would always end her emails with a heart, which would just display as a 'Ăş' for me.

(Yeah, I don't know why she married me, either >.>)

I logged in to my original account to see my sign up date, but I got stopped by a security question. I can't remember what I put for as my favorite movie back in elementary school :P

I never used AOL for myself but I remember having to support them in the mid 90s. They were one of my company's biggest customers. When they had an issue with our product, we (Support, Sales, Engineering) jumped to get past their issue. If I remember correctly, they were a big HP-UX shop.

My in-laws still use AOL. I gave up trying to have them use gmail or outlook. It was too complicated for them.

Just logged into AOL mail with my old account.

Strangely, I was kinda sad seeing only 1 email and it was basically a welcome email from AOL. All of my contacts are empty but then again, maybe I'll check to see if my AIM friends are still around (despite having other means of contacting them) later on when I get home.

Terrisus, you realize you are being mocked, judged, and laughed at, everytime you give out your email address right?

Is it all worth it to you? Lol

Of course <3

I have terrisus.com and also MyfirstnameMylastname.com for when I want more professional emails

This is just making me want to download an old version of AOL and go into the chats. There's no way I could get onto my old username...I would have no idea what my password or anything would be.

Anyone remember punters?

Basically apps that spammed chat and kicked people off their AOL connection.
Haha yes. CPU's were so slow that you could just flood someone's IM window with an unclosed huge font size bracket that you'd copy and paste incessantly. It would lock up their AOL software (if not entire machine) indefinitely and then eventually the modem would disconnect.
