Aonuma: In Zelda: ALBW collecting rupees is "more important than ever"

Oh boy, I was thinkin a thing about this game earlier today but there were no recent threads to post it in.

SO

I think the "other world" in this game isn't the Dark World. Rather, I think it might be a "what if" world. It's already a what-if timeline branch anyway. What if Link in LTTP hadn't defeated Ganon? His evil would have spread out from the Dark World and transformed the Light World into a similar hellscape. The Triforce would have remained under his power, and maybe... become blackened with evil?

There's gotta be a reason they don't call it the Dark World, and the method for entering it sure is different than it was in LTTP. If it's not a what-if Light World, maybe it's a future version of the world, one where Ganon comes back and fucks the place up? Either way though, I think it's a "polluted Light World," not the traditional Dark World.

Maybe.

It is the Dark World and it's not "What if Link in LTTP hadn't defeated Ganon". It's "What if Link in OOT hadn't defeated Ganon".

The coins were just a score system. The Rupees in Skyward Sword was more like typical RPG shopping with a bit of Monster Hunter item farming thrown in.
This is sort of it really: in Zelda they've actually been the currency, in Mario they were just there for raising scores and getting 1ups for every 100 you got. If NSMB2 let you buy things with them, even just unlockable art/music then it might've been a difference that REALLY mattered, but in the end it was only a difference that mattered if you were going for high score/coin count, and if you weren't... it was just more Mario. Which is fine in and of itself really, but it means the game's not fundamentally distinct.

Well obviously. You have to use them to buy a bigger wallet. So you can carry more rupees. So you can get an even bigger wallet. So you can carry more rupees. So you can get...

Why is it the dark world? They have been careful to not call it that. The Dark World isn't even supposed to exist after LTTP.

And I am aware that the timeline branch is an OOT what-if, I am suggesting that this specific Other World is a second what-if, from LTTP, that you can travel into.

Well that's weird. I upgraded everything. Not cause I "needed" them, but because "oh boy new thing!" There are a ton of things to buy in that game, it's great. Some very nice conveniences. You can't really fault the economy if you just decided to.. not buy any of them.
You can fault the economy when there's nothing more to buy. I bought all those upgrades and still had rupees to spare.

I just rolled by eyes when Batreaux gives you the 9000 wallet.

"You might think that was the case with all the past games too"

Oh look you are disagreeing with me about money.

Its obvious this game is the testing grounds for Wii U Zelda. Itll be open world and you decide the order you go in by purchasing quest items.

Well, they did it well in Skyward Sword, which gave you tons of stuff to buy. Which makes it the third Zelda game after Zelda 1 and Wind Waker where money actually means something. Lets hope that they continue that trend.

It's weird this is in a sequel to LttP as that's the game where I felt rupees were the most useless. Once you found a fairy stash there was no reason to buy potions. Hopefully we've got an upgrade system going on.

That's your fault and your alone. The game encourages you to buy various upgrades for various items, potions (although they're only needed early on and in Hero mode I guess) and items at the Beedle shop. If you chose to ignore this, it's on you.

game was all about swordplay to me, i don't recall really using much of the items outside of necessity in dungeons.

whatever you say aonuma

i didn't feel the need to upgrade in skyward sword. I didn't even use a shield for that game.

I can't imagine it will be a bunch of required rupee grinding or anything.

I sure hope not, as stuff like that's a sure fire way to get me to drop a game. I don't have the time for games that require grinding. If I'm not making consistent rapid progress toward the end I'm not going to finish a game these days. Just no time for it with being lucky to get a couple hours a a couple nights a week to game lately.

Slightly different note: Is that shopkeeper inspired by or related to Nabbit from NSMBU??

Definitely a mix of nabbit and throwback to link's bunny transformation in the original game. With the nabbit resemblance I assume he's some kind of thief selling these items at ridiculous prices and with the bunny resemblance I can assume he exists in the dark world. I'm pretty sure his shop is in the dark world where link's house is located in the light and his shop interior is very similar to links house in the light world.

Good for you. Zelda games aren't targeted at only hardcore gamers though and trust me, for more casual gamers SS was a pretty difficult game at times. The need to upgrade stuff and buy heart/stamina/guardian potions was definitely there for most.

That said I hope they keep expanding on the concepts introduced in SS. If ALBW really lets us choose what items to buy and in extension what order to do dungeons, that'd be fantastic. Still want lots of optional items/upgrades to spend those abundant rupees on too.

Skyward Sword is great at using its items throughout the game. Shields aren't the only items you can upgrade. Upgrading the beetle is helpful and necessary. Your choice to not make use of upgrades does not mean they didn't give you that choice or that they weren't helpful.

I just hope the game tells me how much they're worth every time I pick one up.

This is great. You are great.

EDIT: As long as there is no grinding like in Link's Awakening, I'm cool with this. I liked the way it was handled in Skyward Sword... just don't remind me of a rupee's worth.

Rupees should be given the ability to convert into 3DS play coins.

Sadly, I think the opposite will be true.

Such pessimism at the drop of a hat around here. Maybe it might...possibly...be a fun change that we might enjoy? Maybe?

Yes?

I found the shield pretty annoying and threw it away after a few tries. Don't even know why it was included if you didn't need it at all.

Yes?

I enjoyed Skyward Swords upgrade system. Upgrading in games like Demon's Soul, Dark Souls, and the Monster Hunter series is my favorite part. Skyward Sword was no where near grinding shards or monster parts but it was just enough of that system to keep the thought in the back of your mind to search for every treasure chest and kill some enemies you otherwise would just run past.

NSMB2 was wonderful, screw youse guys. Had more fun with it than NSMBWii and probably even NSMBU, although Luigi still beats it handily.

And Four Swords Adventures was the most enjoyable console Zelda since the SNES. So I have no problem with this revelation.

This is the first time i ever see people who want to stick to Zelda's broken economy.

.. ah well, I shouldn't have expected anything else.

Woah. I liked FSA but... let's not go crazy.

The Zelda team has been talking up the idea of nonlinear progression for the past few years now. Having most, if not all, of Link's items for sale from the beginning would be an interesting way of trying that out since the order you buy the items in should easily affect how you progress through the game.

Yeah it was kinda sad when that was the last upgrade I got and at that point it was useless. Blew my money on potions at that point.

It's not too farfetched, in various Zelda games there are a lot of references to the Mario series, sometimes even characters, Link's Awakening was chock full of them, and I even remember Lakitus in Minish Cap

for the love of god keep IAPs out of this. i can already see it.... 1$ for 1000 rupees.

5000 rupees for this hammer you need for this quest! you could grind and play through the dungeon looking for the hammer ooooor just spend a measly 5$...

Ocarina of Time probably has the worst economy of any Zelda game. There's pretty much nothing to buy in any shop you can't easily get for free.

I still remember scouring the entire map for days trying to find all of the skulltallas only to be rewarded with a permanent gold rupee in the skulltalla house, as if there was anything at all to spend any money on, much less an endless supply of rupees. Especially since by that point in the game you've been everywhere and done everything.

I sure hope so. One of my biggest problems with more recent Zelda games is how the games act like finding rupees is a huge deal. But the player has almost no use for them pay a certain point, so I'm never happy to open a chest and find rupees.

Exactly my experience. Who cares about money at that point in the game?

Reminds me of finding Yoshi in Super Mario 64. Who cares about more lives that late in the game? What a baffling, useless "reward."

It's the Dark World no matter what they end up calling it. The Dark World, The Golden Land, Sacred Realm they're all the same thing in different states with different names. They probably don't call it the Dark World because it was the Dark World when Ganon was its ruler and he was defeated in LttP, so it might be in a state of healing or something. And it doesn't go away. It's the Triforce's world. It doesn't go anywhere. Maybe it can be sealed off or something, but it doesn't cease to exist.

I doubt that there is another timeline split at the end of LttP. If there is, only the people working on the game would know. I don't even know what would make you think that.

Yes?

I think Aonuma should just keep quiet. The concept sells itself (Link to the Past sequel) and the game looks good (and plays good, I know first hand).

He's done this before. "We've fixed something that was broken with the last Zelda game(s). Seriously!"

Game comes out, nothing is fixed, and in some ways, things are worse. At this point, Im just pessimistic as fuck about Zelda, and don't believe any of the pre-game hype from developers.

Yet, LBW is my second most hyped game of the year after Pokemon. How does that work? :p
