Which shall I watch? I've read criticisms that the Redux version is too slow and yet it also appears to be the richer experience.

Original all the way. Do *not* watch redux until you've seen the original cut, and even then it's entirely optional.

i'd go with the original, especially if it's your first time. redux is a good 50 minutes longer, and it's pretty hard to stay awake during that one.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ORIGINAL obviously

there's a reason why those scenes were cut. trust the original vision, not the senility of an old man. remember, coppola hangs out with spielberg and lucas

Hah i watched the Redux version first a couple of days ago, i found it still awesome, whats wrong with the plantation scene? I cant even remember that.

If you become a die hard fan of the film you need to see the workprint because of the following scenes:

Extended helicopter attack scene.

Dennis Hopper's death scene.

Martin Sheen shoving a spear through one of Brando's henchmen holding a child.

I'll echo everyone else and suggest the original cut for your first viewing. For a later viewing, sure, check out Redux; the added scenes, particularly the plantation sequence, change the pacing in interesting ways, if not necessarily for the best.

It complete fucks with the pacing. It slows the film to a crawl. Doesn't help that it adds virtually nothing to the film, either

Do not watch Redux EVER, more like it. Unless you like almost an hour of pace-killing bloat. Go with the theatrical version.

Well, pretty much, but curiosity will get to a lot of people. The most important thing is to not let the redux version be your first viewing of the film, since that'll permanently shape your perception of the film and future viewings.

When I popped in the DVD a few weeks ago, I was presented with a menu that has two different movie. The original and the redux. I figured the redux meant that the video quality was better and with better sound so I watched that one. I didn't know that it meant a whole different film. I'm going to have to rent the movie again and watch the original now.

Also, it's a great movie. I was thinking the whole time that it would make a great Metal Gear movie if when the main character reaches that bald guy and he has a Metal Gear and a battle ensues through the jungle.

The movie had everything to be a Metal Gear movie. A long ass mission briefing, the main character talking in a gruffy voice, the battles were spectacular and the main character was kept out of those battles. It was awesome.

Redux, but hit next chapter when you get to the plantation scene. It's just that one scene that really mangles Redux.

I have to say, while I think Apocalypse Now is a better film without it, at the same time I don't quite get the plantation scene hate. Sure, it's long and disrupts the action somewhat, but it also helps give some context to the Vietnam War with it's discussion of French colonialism. Bit-Bit, having seen Redux, don't feel that you have to rush out and watch the original; you've seen the same film, just with an additional 50 minutes of footage. If you go back to the original, you'll notice the change in pacing, but it won't exactly be a revelation.
