Apparently food service employees at chains just hate Asians.

*sigh* It's from holding a sharpie in the same hand you grab the cup with. I do it all the time. Nothing to see here...

It is both amazing and a shame how many people are racist apologists...

It's my turn to remind you: are you really surprised though? :P There are many closet ignoramus on GAF, be it race or sexuality related. And they always use the same old "but but free speech....." or "You're too sensitive" or the good old "I have colored/gay/alien friends too"

Because they never experience ridicule/discrimination first-hand, they automatically assume that those who complain are just over-reacting.

I will say that I've heard several friends who are servers at restaurants say they hate Asians because they don't tip

Well here in the Philippines taxi drivers tend to despise Koreans because they give exact fare only. The Chinese and Japanese tend to be a bit more generous for some reason.

How the hell are you possibly offended by this?

You're not one of those 'Come on, they were just kidding so lighten up!' guys, are you?

So all I have to do is buy a Starbucks drink, use a sharpie to write "CUNT" on the name line, snap a pic and I made the front page of most shitty news outlets on the web? NOICE!

At least the Papa John's and Chik Fil A examples have real proof. This is just straight-up bullshit and I'm disappointed that no one is questioning its authenticity. And hearsay by the complainants about the manager's reaction isn't a compelling argument either.

I think it's fair to allow them to describe customers by race since they see so many faces and hear so many names everyday, that narrowing it down would increase the speed of service. I'm sure waiters do the same thing on who ordered which dish at a table.

I can understand being upset at how lazy they are in using such convenient "code", but don't pretend like this is a sign that they have hate in their hearts.

Waiters go by tables. "Table five needs this, " and so on. But lets say it's a deli and they don't have that system. Then there isn't anything racist about saying the "table of asians/balcks/ etc."

You are defending referring to them as slant eyes, hook-nosed, big lipped, etc. Now maybe they aren't racist, but they sure are promoting a casual use of stereotypes and ethnophaulism.

lol, yeah, someone did this for all that sweet cheddar and news coverage.

I remember going to a food truck in front of my office building and the first thing the lady said was "We're out of chicken" I wanted a tuna melt...

Either way, I thought it was hilarious and makes for a good story. No need to take stuff as harmless as this seriously

I want to try this now at my local Starbucks, and probably call them out if I get something like this. Hey people! Look how she drew me on this drink!

Whelp, there goes my nearly year-long run of being Angry Asian Man free.
This isn't enough to set off a similar rage that Miley Cyrus and her friends did a while back.

That Miley Cyrus one was retarded. She's obviously friends with the guy. She didn't find some Asian on the street and go, "look at that slanty-eyed gook!" Context people.

Doing it to a customer is pretty intolerable.

.

...

Deli's usually give you a ticket number.

This thread. Seriously guys? The length at which apologists go to defend and then explain their rationale is crazy. Not only that but their explanations are just.. I'm leaving this thread.

Waiters are generally supposed to know who ordered which dish in a particular table. Person A ordered the salad, B ordered the pasta, etc. They are usually discouraged from shopping around the dishes, asking who ordered what. Customers would probably be appreciative of a waiter who can remember what you ordered.

They aren't going to ask your name, and even if they did they would go through so many customers in a shift that they couldn't be expected to remember everyone.

I can see how the way they distinguished asians might be slightly offensive since it could be an exaggeration, but simply using race alone to remember a customer for two minutes is not a symptom of racism. It's just convenient.

I get that acknowledging it so blatantly could shock some people but there's a big difference between making your job easier versus hating a particular racial group.

They order the tables from 12 o' clock to keep them in order. Or they select a person based on their alinement to the room and list the dishes clockwise. This is all so you can give your table to another server and avoid confusion.

So no, using race really isn't the best way to do it and would be really, really confusing for a server to keep all those faces in their mind. Way easier to had a grid or other arrangement so that you don't even have to look at what the person looks like, just remember the table and chair position. The customer changes, the chair doesn't.

lol, yeah, because that would never happen.

you are so naive.

I admit I'm not up to speed on the various hustles out there to score mad Starbuck's Gift Card money.

I will say that I've heard several friends who are servers at restaurants say they hate Asians because they don't tip

Recent immigrants are worse at tipping than people born in the West because people from most of Asia are used to a world without tipping. In China, Japan, and Korea there is no default tipping.

You say it's okay to describe them by race?
Since when did 'slant-eye' become a race?

They didn't describe them by race. If they had, the cup would say 'Asian' on it.

Shit, the trike drivers must love me over there, because I was tipping them like crazy. I didn't even know they expect tips; I just did it because that's what I do.

Drawing two slanted eyes is faster, neater, and slightly more subtle than writing out ASIAN.

Granted, these are not politically correct people and the only good justification for using this code is that they were lazy. This is not to say that I think a billion dollar coffee chain should make this standard policy.

But I have a very hard time believing that of all the possible ways that one exhibits racism, that this is the only thing they did and that they are monsters that only judge you on your race and nothing else. Generally, beliefs that strong manifest into much more mean-spirited and malicious acts.

Just because a person is insensitive about your heritage doesn't mean they hate you for it. That's what bothers me, that people don't seem to want to distinguish between an incompetent employee versus an actual monster of a human being.

Even the thread title is "Food chain employees hate Asians".

Better yet, just tell them your name is actually "cunt" and have them write it on the cup themselves. Why waste your own sharpie? :p

I went to Boston Market a few months ago for some meatloaf, mac and cheese and mash potatoes/gravy, walk up to the counter and:

Employee (white guy): "Welcome to Boston Market"

Me (black guy): "Hi I-"

Employee (white guy): "We don't have any chicken"

Me (black guy): "..."

Employee (white guy): "...I'm just saying"

I don't understand why liking chicken is even a stereotype. Who doesn't eat chicken?

The fuck is happening this week with Asian racism/xenophobia?

Listen to a Newt Gingrich speech. Apparently he is running against the Chinese.

Well, a stereotype doesn't require any factual grounding. The stereotypes we have of the Japanese and Koreans for instance are different from what the stereotypes the Chinese hold of those two nations.

But Boston Market doesn't have fried chicken.

The rotisserie is their signature dish, so I can understand saying that in the opening spiel. From the way you're writing it, your lack of response is what turned it awkward.

That's what I figured, but you can never be too sure. My pause was initially shock turning into rational thinking and deciding how to respond.

I just laughed about it with my wife while we ate because it was pretty funny as just a coincidence.

Yeah, you show me someone who doesn't like chicken or watermelon and I'll show you an un-American space alien. I'm not big on fried though. I prefer grilled.

I LOVE watermelon. I can't stop eating it, I usually eat a whole watermelon at a time.

Stereotype about watermelon makes no sense to me because I can't imagine anyone not loving watermelon.

You do not have to tip at Starbucks. I usually pay with credit card so I don't tip, but when I pay with cash I do tip some change because I hate carrying coins. :p
I have never heard any complains about not receiving tips from a customer from my co-workers either when I was working at Starbucks and I was there for years.

I think some people in this thread don't realize that angry asian man has a stick, admits it and runs with it:

Everything is racist, but not everything is racist. Yes, I've been calling anything and everything racist. I'm only joking... some of the time. I think some people tend to take issue with my definition of 'racist.' Yeah yeah, I know. But for me, racism and ignorance all run together in the same club —it happens all the time, and I'll be happy to point it out for you. It sometimes just helps to deal with it using a little humor. But I'm not organizing crusades and media campaigns against every little offensive thing I mention on this site.

And the racism! Man, was everything just RACIST. I threw the word around left and right. Angry Asian Man had developed the special gift of hypersensitivity towards Racism and could detect it anywhere and everywhere. I took the liberty of calling attention to the surrounding Racism for all to see! The picture of the Asian in this magazine ad? Racist. The word 'Chinese' on page 862 in Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov? Racist. The yellow traffic signal light? Racist. It was all Racism with a capital 'R'. The rest of the world was unaware, but Angry Asian Man had been given the power to see!

Off topic, but I gotta ask you about your name. Sounds like it should be Letisha.

Leshita?

It is supposed to be Le Sheee Ta.
Actually it's from Laputa, Sheeta's secret family name, but some other spelling of it that I recall from an old Cantonese version of the film's subtitles.

I think "Lusheeta" is what they usually use now officially in the subs, but I prefer mine because it has a swear in it... though it makes my username impossible for use on some forums. :/

Obviously I don't know anything about this food truck, but is it possible that chicken is the most popular thing there and the woman was just tired of having every person come up and ask for something they ran out of so she starts off every order with that line?

I don't.....I can't......This still happens? This wasn't a dream?

It's possible I suppose.

That's right, the "I" is usually pronounced "EE" in Asian countries.

Thanks for answering my question :) Actually a very cool sounding username and name in general.
