He looked fine in Star Trek. He will probably look fine in Doctor Strange too. Putting on a bit of weight (and a beard) sort of take away from the unusual qualities of his face.

I think Americans are more obsessed with the survival of the fittest mentality than the UK, which seems to have more comradery and "we're all in this together" spirit. We tend to cast actors that are more aspirational ideals than relatable reflections of ourselves. At least physically, anyway.


Even the stories seem to emphasize heroics and exceptionalism more than most UK media I've seen, actually.

I think it's mainly because of population. American casting directors can be significantly more picky, since they have a larger talent pool to choose from.

This is almost certainly the answer.

It's why shows like American Idol had a much higher overall talent level in the US.

I'd always felt euro casting relies more on charisma whereas US casting has the means to go for perfection in every facette of a person.

And then even if an US actor is more averagely looking they will press every inch of beauty out of them with perfect hair, make up and dressing for filming and pr. Everything is just so much more professional.

Probably, but there's also the fact that UK and US populations actually have a very distinct "look" to them. I can tell whether someone's British or American based purely on looks. It's right more often than not, dunno why.

It's not so much a difference between British vs. American actors, rather it's just a unique fact about American TV/cinema. American shows and movies are usually cast only with better-than-average looking actors and actresses, and that isn't the case in other countries including the UK, where actors encompass a more representative portion of the appearance spectrum

It's actually really jarring when you consider shows with a large cast such as LOST or Homeland (just the first two to come to mind) where literally every single character is good looking. Even the news in America tends to be much 'sexier' for lack of a better word - just compare the BBC to Fox News or CNN.

Also Black Hawk Down is chock full of foreigners playing Americans.

This blew me away the first time I searched for Black Hawk Down at IMDB because I wanted to learn a little more about the actors. The only American I can remember is Josh Hartnett and Tom Sizemore. It seemed like everybody else was a foreigner. Everytime I watch the movie see the Ranger Captain making a reference to American Football to the Delta Force guys now I can't help it but chuckle because I don't think he understands what he said during that scene.
