Apple announces new 128GB iPad4 starting at $799

Yea but music and video will easily go on a sd card or flash drive.

$100 per storage upgrade seems like a lot to me. Surface rt 64 gigs is $600 . $30 for a micro sd 64 gig card. $30 per 64 gig flash drive. So for $800 I can easily do 6 sd/flsh drives for a total of 448 gigs of space.

edit* I learned in the surface thread that the newer ipads still don't have those basic features. So now the pricing makes more sense to me.

Only a Surface owner would walk around with 6 SD cards or flash drives.

Why would people need so much space for a tablet? Unless they're really relying on it for their daily activities.

I use my 32 gig iPad for comics, and at retina resolution those things take up a lot of space. I'm constantly having to free up room any time I want to download something substantial. Next time around I'm definitely buying a 64 gig.

I wish they would increase the storage on each model without raising the price and phase out the 16 gig model, but I guess that's not how Apple does things.

I'm hoping they eventually drop the 16GB and go with 32/64/128, lowering the prices. 128GB is crazy, but with retina 16 doesn't seem like enough anymore.

Wow... I've barely made a dent in my 15 GB. It's all about the cloud, folks.

The cloud doesn't help when I'm traveling for nearly 24 hours with little to no access to the Internet. Put a few movies/tv shows and a couple of games with retina assets on there and my 64gb gets filled up quicker than you'd think.

I imagine that'll happen with the next update.

Sounds as if you need some sort of larger iPad.

Same. I have 3.6gb free on my 16gb iPad and I don't worry about managing stuff.

I keep a lot of stuff on dropbox (pdfs/photos/videos) and keep my music in Google Music.

My iPad never leaves the house, though, so I have access to steady wifi all the time. I imagine it's different for people who use their iPads a lot in locations without fast internet access.

Who's going to buy that at that price? It's fucking ridiculous.

This is the only thing that would make me sour on my iPhone 5 purchase, the 5S becoming 128GB. =(

Oh well, but I hope the Mini also gets 128GB in the future.

Yep, that's what make me happy about this news. It seems we are now one step closer to 32GB being the standard.

I hope (wish) both next iPhone and iPad drop the 16 GB models and 32 GB becomes the standard.

Actually, no. Surface Pro has same chipsets, but better parts (LCD) and more capability (Wacom pen), and have more apps available to it (Windows).

So you are talking out of your ass.

Maybe he just wants to edit his iWeb site and play Nanosaur?

Why does response to Apple criticism always turns into sales & numbers dick-wagging?

No one is saying the Surface/Surface Pro will outsell the iPad, they're saying it can do more at a similar pricepoint. If you want to list legit reasons why you'd pick an iPad over a competing product, talk about Apple's app superiority, UI consistency, etc. Not "but it will sell so much more!".

I dunno , I put my tablets in a bag so carrying multiple flash drives doesn't bother me.

much better than having to carry all this stuff

*Images of stuff you can also put in a bag*

Oh the inconvenience, hauling those heavy adapters / keyboard case. It really affronts my senses popping an adapter into a slot. Thanks Obama.

128 GB? Why would you need that much space on an iPad? And holy shit at that price.

I'm thinking about getting a 32GB with the next iteration. Think I'd fill that up that quickly? I play games, but usually not very many at the same time. I mean I probably have 15 on my iPhone right now but I'm only playing like 3 of them regularly. I wouldn't put that much music on it - that's what my iPhone is for (and when would I not have that?). I might (rarely) put 2-3 movies on it at once (rentals or ripped DVD's) but probably not more than that.

I can't see going over 32GB with those restrictions - it would be a browsing/streaming/gaming device.

I am using 36.5GB on my 64GB iPhone right now, but 17.8 of that is music (again wouldn't have that on an iPad). I don't even try to manage space.

Loollll I responed to someone saying that only a surface owner would carry multiple flash drives with them. I'm just showing the myriad amounts of products created to duplicate functions built into the surface that the ipad doesn't have.

I much rather carry around a few flash drives than to carry around all those things. Would you not ?

Hopefully the 16GB will be dropped with the next round of iPhones/iPads/iPod Touches and they'll scale the range up to 32/64/128.

At Apple's price points, I hope 16GB isn't dropped. I use it for books and banking and leisure apps, I have my phone for music, and I don't need 50 movies on there at once.

And you know very well that iPads don't have removable media.

Really? I wasn't aware of that; when I was shopping for tablets I noticed that a big complaint about the Nexus 7 and 10 was that they didn't have SD slots, so I just assumed that therefore the iPad did.

You'd probably be fine with 32

You sound like me. Even with Asphalt 7 or whatever the 2 GB racing game is called, I at 10 GB used on my 16. My phone is full of music, so I don't need it duplicated. As you said, I don't need that much media on there at once, so 16 is very much enough for me.

at some point the nand will hit a micron process where it will become impossible to make smaller nand chips .

What will happen is that 32 gigs will slot into the $200 mark for phones and I guess $500 for ipads (that's the 16 gig price right) and 16 gigs will go away. The 128 gig will drop to the 64 gig price and then the rumors ofa 256 gig ipad will hit the web.

After every Apple event it's "Why won't Apple make a 128GB version? Ahh!" And now that they have it's "Why did they make a 128GB version? Who would buy this?"

The only time I get close to jamming my 16 full is on road trips when we put rentals/movies on there. Otherwise, nah.

Cloud storage is finally getting to a point where it's good. 128 isn't really necessary anymore unless you travel a lot and won't have wifi/3G

I like apple products and can understand why they are so popular. But, there is no way in hell that that tablet is worth that price.

128GB is pretty good especially if you want to do some basic video editing or if you encode your own movies (a good quality 720p movie takes 4-6GB each), and there are a lot of people who wants to carry a lot of data in their iPads so definitely there is a good market for this, but as a lot of people I would prefere that this took the place of the 64GB one instead of adding another tier to the line

thats really expensive but theres probably a market for that. i know i need more space on my ipad.

Uhh, apps are getting big. Lots of 1GB+ Apps. People now have hundreds of Apps. There is a market for this.

yep. games especially on the ipad take up a shit load of space. not to mention if you have lots of movies and music.

i wish i opted for the 64gb ipad. i have to keep deleting and redownloading apps to manage em :/

I can't speak for everyone, but I think people thought that a 128gb SKU would remove the 16gb from existence, making the new pricing structure 32/64/128. Instead, they're keeping 16gb and just adding to the list.

Makes no difference to me.
